Original Lister Cs Engines / JP4 startup
« on: December 23, 2023, 01:53:50 AM »
Hi..
My JP4 is in storage at a friends place. I will be there in 2 weeks and want to start her up, it’s been stored for a while I’m guessing over 10 years...
What is the start up procedure. It is a 1951 and turns over freely . The decompressor levers are seized and that will be my first job...
Cheers Owenga.

Original Lister Cs Engines / New toys.... JP4 Hr3
« on: October 14, 2023, 11:47:21 PM »
Hi..
I have purchased two Lister engines firstly a tidy running HR3 that has had a generator but it had been taken off and probably gone to scrap. I will put 3ph 12/15 Kw alternator on it and mount on a trailer as a power supply for on site engineering work..

The most interesting engine by far is a JP4 I just bought that has had its alternator removed as well. This engine has been shed stored and in very good condition and turns over freely. I’m not sure what I’ll do with it..... I’ve always wanted an old Launch with a Lister or Gardener so it might end up being a marine engine.. the tag has  “spec 38 4 34 ‘.. I’m thinking it’s 1938 ?

Hi..
I have had some time recently to work on the CS8 and while setting up the govenor linkages I discovered that the fuel rail binds up due to worn bore, this will certainly disrupt the govenor and effect the output voltage accordingly.. I plan to buy a replacement complete pump they are not expensive, that should stabilise the RPM and therefore the voltage..
Old timer engines have a CAV pump for a good price..

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: CS6 Loose flywheels
« on: June 01, 2023, 12:22:46 AM »
Hi..
Thanks for that. My brother has got very involved with this project and has ordered new barrel and piston, camshaft, fuel lifter, gaskets etc..
The loose flywheels we are going to make an insert boss with a heavy flange approx 250mm diameter and will bore the boss out to take the insert then bolt through the flange into the web of the wheel. It might be a little over engineered but there is a lot of inertia and it will stay put..
I have requested photos from my bro so I can post them up..

Cheers Owenga..

Original Lister Cs Engines / CS6 Loose flywheels
« on: May 24, 2023, 08:20:47 PM »
Hi..
I got given a CS8 with a SOM alternator in good condition , so I donated my CS6 to my brother who is doing it up to use with his off grid solar... there are a few issues as you would expect but the trickiest would be the flywheels have both slogged out the bore and the crank is also undersize.
My first idea was build up the crank with weld and machine back to oversized then bore the wheels to suit, but that would make it bigger diameter than the main bearings..
We could fit “taperlocks” but there is limited material in the wheel boss..

Any suggestions...... Owenga

Hi Bob ..
Thanks for the advice.. I have done a rectifier upgrade on a friends Lister so can easily do this one, I’ll have more time to work on it soon .. I’m trying to upload photos but I can’t work out how to convert them to an acceptable format from my iPad..

Thanks Daryl..

It apparently was still working about 2 years ago.. I’m hoping to service it and check everything over then fire it up, it did have a the lash cap for the inlet valve in the tapped cover. I have refitted it...

Question.. it was startomatic but there is no control box, apparently they just hooked up phase and neutral  and ran power straight into the house, but the voltage did fluctuate..
If I run this do I need some more components.... ?

I spotted a cool “Barnfind “ it’s a 1940s original JP3 generator almost complete the huge old meter board etc... It was rescued from the dump about 20 years ago and had been in a shed unused for about 20 years before that ....

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Removing the camshaft CS6
« on: November 18, 2020, 11:25:05 PM »
Thanks..
I did support the shaft and hit the pin with a decent hammer , it’s really stubborn, I have sanded the ends down to remove burring, now I will heat it and hopefully punch it out....
Where can I get replacement pins from, and do you know the degree of taper (I might need to make them ) .... ?

Owenga. ( it’s a bay on Chatham island where I live )........

I’m hoping someone can help with removing the fuel lobe pin I know it’s tapered and I tried punching it out from what appears to be the thin end and had no joy. I can drill it then punch the remenent but that is a last resort.... Any suggestions
