General Discussion / one of the early members has gone to the lord
« on: January 16, 2022, 05:28:18 PM »
he was known as "quinnf" on this forum and as "oddjob" on the microcogen forum

he was a solid guy that i met face to face when a few of us got together back in  i think '07 at "hottaters" place in idaho

he was a decent and kind man that was hard to get riled up, someone that was a calming and reasoned voice when things got heated on the LEF back in the day.

he built one of the 6/1 listeroids from powersolutions and painted it silver, he caught a lot of flack for doing that, but that was Q, someone that marched to his own drum, and for that he was a really interesting guy.

"ol' silver" as that 6/1 was known, was a test bed for early development of these engine's within a smaller group of guys that were working with then and putting large amounts of run time on them. everything he built was first rate, clean, well thought out and executed.

i could go on, but suffice it to say he left this world far too soon, at age 65 he was just getting into his retirement when he was called home.

he was my friend, and i miss him

Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / 28/2 plus st15 head NOS F/S
« on: August 25, 2021, 12:46:12 AM »
comes a time in my life that i must face the inevitable nature of man, that being we don't get to do everything we thought we might get to do when we get older.

so for consideration of the members or your friends
i have the following for sale

1 (one) 28hp 2 cylinder petteroid diesel, in crate, mounted on a skid, with radiator, waterpump mounted. this engine is a preban engine built prior to 2005 (iirc maybe 1998) as stated, new old stock, still in the crate, been in dry storage since i acquired it back in '06

1 (one) st15 powersolutions generator head, new old stock, dates to ~2005 never ran, out of crate iirc, still on the plywood base.

i bought these two to put together a larger power source,
i may also have some suitable pulleys to put the two together, i would have to check and see... if someone wants the pair and i can find a set of pulleys, i will throw them in the deal.

located in central kansas, i cannot ship, but i have access to a skid steer with forks to load on your truck or trailer. i would need a bit of lead time, and would have to be in the dry season, as the container they are stored in is on a dirt base, and if it gets wet the skid steer will sink.

i don't recall the weight of a 28/2 petteroid, but i expect maybe a half ton?  i don't remember, but i think it is noted on the crate, so i can look and see if anyone needs to know.

as with any of the engines from india it comes with a few spares, a starting handle and a few crude wrenches, and i would strongly suggest the typical tear down and thorough cleaning prior to use.

the petteroids are a bit different than the listeroid twins, they have an oil pump (piston type) and are rated at 1000rpm iirc

the 28/2 sold for $3500 back in '06 and the st head was another $650 bucks.

i would entertain offers, so don't be bashful, shoot me a pm  :)

General Discussion / microcogen.info
« on: July 18, 2019, 08:33:01 PM »
has been offline for a few weeks now, i haven't had much time to get it sorted.
today i finally got enough information from simplemachines and hostmonster to get it sorted out again.

i realize the microcogen forums are all but nearly dead, however there is in my opinion information from years ago
that might be of interest to others, so i will keep it going.

we resolved the issue, so it can now be accessed as usual, however i will have to do some upgrades over the next couple
weeks to get it completely done and available for however long there is interest.

not trying to take anything away from this forum,  just wanted to let folks know what happened over there.

back to the political grind

Listeroid Engines / member etiquette and banning?
« on: November 12, 2013, 02:10:14 AM »
there has been some discontent relating to the behavior of a newbie member
and his inability to remain civil as evidenced by his name calling and foul language.

normally my thinking would be to kick this guy to the curb and move on, however it appears he is capable of providing some comic relief...

the question becomes... does this comic relief offset the bad behavior?

maybe so?

seeing how i am one of a couple that he has directed his ire toward, i thought maybe i would step up and state that his behavior really does not bother me at all... he really would have to be a lot worse than he is now.

after all i have been called so much worse, i do have an evil exwife you know!  :)

so unless his behavior is upsetting other members i think we ought to let him run as far as he likes.

comments welcome

General Discussion / david edgingtons new lister book
« on: August 19, 2012, 09:36:37 PM »
George over at utterpower, ever the man to cover the lister/oids, and other engine's
dear to all of us has posted information of david edgington's new book

it covers details and history of several lister engines that some might find very interesting

there are so few folks writing such books today, it just seems right to offer some support
if not from buying a book, maybe some words of encouragement.

check it out guys

General Discussion / future of alternative energy?
« on: June 14, 2012, 10:34:49 PM »
guys, i don't know if you folks frequent utterpower.com
but George has been doing some investigative work  into how our tax dollars are being spent
on Alternative Energy schemes.

we all heard about the solindra debacle and the electric car problem
now it seems we have another that is likely to come unraveled

check it out here

http://www.utterpower.com/nrels-amonix-pages/

for some reason the press isn't touching it, no one is asking the hard questions, save or George

the problem i see with this government picked winners or rather picked loosers (frequently) is in the end
it damages the Alternative energy industry.

tax payers loose millions if not billions, 401k's get hit, and the result is a public that finally wakes up and over reacts
not wanting anything ever to do with AE again!

we have seen this play out before, back in the 70's when every joker in the world built all manner of AE stuff, made huge
claims that of course didn't pan out, and the result was the public revolted against the whole mess....the problem then became
a lot of very good people and companies that were building good products couldn't sell their products and we all lost out.

once the jig is up, there will be no money for good projects, and all of this will be seen as only so much snake oil by an ill informed
public, which of course elect folks that are often even less informed.

what do you guys think?
i want to know how you guys feel about this sort of thing? i am thinking we ought to be involved on some level in the discussion
and asking some questions.  we all know how hard it is for us to get anywhere with the epa, why should these guys have a clear pass
and not at least have to answer a few questions?

thoughts?

General Discussion / some bad news...
« on: June 03, 2011, 07:57:26 PM »
one of our long time friends and suppliers of engine's and generators has become
gravely ill and is in a portland oregon VA hospital fighting for his life.

please go to George's utterpower site for details, and keep Joel in your prayers.

http://www.utterpower.com/

if possible please send a card to Joel, sometimes just knowing there are others that care is enough to really help in recovery.

thanks

Everything else / KISS vs COMPLEX, tell us what you are doing
« on: August 01, 2009, 05:42:27 AM »
The alternator thread got me to thinking, clearly there are those that ascribe to the KISS principle
and there are those that ascribe to computer/robotic control over every facet of their system
and there are those that are all over the middle ground.

i thought maybe it might be interesting to see what others are doing, how complex is your system?
how complex do you want it to be? or rather what will it be like when you are done? or what is a perfect
system to you?

go into as much detail as you like, those that are hardcore KISS folks likely won't read all of it, but
those that are on the other end of the spectrum likely will read every word you type.

i will write up my system plan this weekend and post it, and look forward to what you guys are doing.

Generators / alternator choices, pm vs electro field...
« on: July 26, 2009, 09:18:25 PM »
being a curious old fart i thought i might ask
based on the various folks exploring alternative generator designs

to those that use the hydrogen appliance pm alternators, the windblue pm alternators
and other modified small frame automotive alternators.
why would you want to use one of these units? what were you hopeing to gain by using one?
how has it worked out for you?  how does it compare in fuel consumption efficiency to other alternators you have used?

i am trying to get my head around all the hype surrounding these modified delco alternators with the magnet rotors
personally i can see no benefit to using one, and i can see a couple of issues surrounding their use that are negative.
i don't buy into their claims of longevity of 115k hours, and wild ass claims of output amperage, and most especially i take
exception to their claims that their pm units save huge amounts of power needed by standard alternators for excitation
their claims of 50% going to excitation is over the top.

so lets hear about it, or lets hear about other options

this one looks to be much more thought out, and probably just as dangerous as the sledgehammer stunt

http://www.funnyhub.com/videos/pages/cool-sawdust-explosion.html

sure wouldn't want to be cruising over with a light aircraft, helicopter or balloon about the time that thing went off!
