Thanks you for the input 38ac, I'll just keep my eyes open. It just seems like one only comes up for sale every other year in my tri-state area and never for a super great deal. Any suggestions on where to look besides craigslist and eBay?

That is great advice, I have a transfer box I picked up that I just need to wire in, and can show her how great it is for her lol.

Listeroid Engines / Testing import exception

Has anyone successfully imported an Indian or Chinese horizontal under the "testing" exemption outlined in the EPA import guidelines? I was looking around the forum at a post from 2007 and there was also mention of an "emergency" use exception.

Wow, thank you guys. I really appreciate the feedback. I will keep you updated. My wife said I have to sell my Subaru Robin generator before I can get a lister. A Reasonable request since we just bought our first house together and the money doesn't come down as easy as the snow does. Hopefully it will sell quick! I will continue to do some reading and get more familiar with the platform. Thanks again.

buickanddeere,

There are still a few of us young bucks around! I'm 25 and have been tinkering and building as long as I remember (because of my dad and his dad both being teachers in rural MN you fixed it yourself or it didn't get fixed!). I'm looking for an affordable small Diesel engine to tinker with. I have a Subaru Robin RGD5000H I decided is not what I need anymore (trying to sell it), I want something with a flywheel and water cooled. It just seems very difficult to procure a slow speed liquid cooled diesel these days. I found 1 listeroid for sale in a neighboring state with a gen head but they want $3000 and I will most likely have to rebuild the entire thing to make it reliable (half the fun I know, but It would be a lot more fun for $1800 or less). I'm open to the Chinese models as well but I have never seen one for sale in my area.

Thanks Bruce,

I believe it is just a base with parts kit, the guy didn't run it much so I'm assuming it didn't run great when he put it together and is scared to run it, so time to sell it I guess. What questions should I ask before driving down there?

Listeroid Engines / Good price?

Hello all,

Would love some opinions on a listeroid I found for sale in the midwest. It is a Metro premium 6/1 (no idea what premium means) with ST 5kw generator on a steel I frame. Engine is describes as like new, generator is described as used but good shape. He is asking $3000. Is that a decent price in 2019? Would love some input.

Thank you.

Sounds like a clone is the way to go for me based off this info. It sounds like auctions are a decent way to go to get one pretty inexpensive. Do you guys have any other suggestions for putting together a system on a budget? I have a Subaru Robin (Hatz) Diesel 5000kw with less than 3 hours on it that I going to sell. As soon as that one sells I'm putting the money towards a listeroid project.

Being in MN, I'm not worried about a people threat. 90% of people would leave in a shtf, way to harsh in the winter with no electricity/heat. Not really worried about fuel either, there would be plenty of motor oil, vegetable oil ect. I'm just wondering what would be a good long term reliable genset. Rebuilding a roid sounds like a blast, I don't know anything about the chinese horizontals, I'll do some reading on here about those. Thanks 38ac, I love the couple of youtube vids you have on your engines btw!

Love the responses, what if you were going to have one generator for a long term emergency situation with no near end in sight. What platform would you choose for fuel flexibilty, reliability, parts availability (US).

Side note: I am pretty handy, with mechanical things, it sounds like that would factor into this.

This is more of what I'm after.

Wow, thank you for all the responses. I'm located in Minnesota, USA. I want to use it as a reliable backup generator that could flex into long hours of use if needed. I also love the fuel flexibilty of the listers.

Hello all, I am new to the listeroid and was wondering what readily aquirable brands and models have the best replacement part availability? Trying to figure this out before I run out and buy one.

Thanks,
