Listeroid Engines / Strange sounds
« on: September 14, 2022, 11:18:35 PM »
Hello all,

I finally found some time to put the 12/2 together. I have the bottom and top end all together, just no fuel lines, flywheels, or cooling hooked up. I oiled it up good while assembling, but when I turn it over there is a 2x metallic clank. It seems to occur almost exactly when the number 2 cylinder vales are in their exhaust then intake cycle. It sounds like it may be coming from the camshaft? Any ideas? Is there a normal click clack that I should be hearing when turning it over? I never really turned it over when I got it because there was a little rust in cylinder 1. So I don't really know what is "normal" for sounds.

Are these 165’s DI or IDI?

Cool, has anyone tried using a standard 10" water filter hosing and those paper/cloth filters for oil? I've seen people use them in diy bio-diesel setups to filter the wvo, even when it is being heated.

Have you had any trouble finding rolls that fit? I was doing some reading online and it looks like the rolls today often are not the same size as when these filters were originally made.

My Listeroid is a DI engine and it runs well on both BioD and WVO.

BioD - No mods needed. (Except for changing the crappy Indian rubber fuel line from the tank to the fuel filter. It will disintegrate.
Modern fuel injector hose has a liner which is compatible with biodiesel.

WVO - I heat the WVO on the way to the injector using a Ni-chrome wire heater wrapped around the steel injector line.
The other option is a coolant heat exchanger which passes coolant heat to the wvo on the way to the injector pump.

Blend - No mods needed (If you choose to run a blend, then no fuel heating should be necessary as the viscosity is already adequate.)

Awesome, thank you for the input.

This is awesome, I think I'm going to do the same thing on my twin.

By the way.... for a lister(oid) you don't have to go to the trouble of making biodiesel.
They run very well on cleaned/filtered waste vegetable oil.
Also consider a blend. 80% veg oil and 20% unleaded gasoline.
Just keep the temperatures high enough for clean combustion (coolant thermostat).
Start on diesel for warm up, then switch over to WVO. Afterwards, switch back to diesel for 3 minutes or so before shutdown.

Do you think that would work alright in a DI listeroid?

Where I live methanol can be purchased in any quantity you like (up to 44 gal drum size) from industrial suppliers. However for some reason it requires police clearance.
If you know anyone running a moonshine still they may be happy to give you their foreshots and heads which could be redistilled/compressed into something fairly effective.

Bulk Sodium Hydroxide available at farm supply stores. Potassium hydroxide available from soap-making suppliers.

Funny in my area transporting a full drum of methanol is no problem, but having a still (ANY still) can get you in HUGE legal trouble.

Thank you for the tip! There’s a propane tank refurbishing company not too far from my place, I’m going to see if they have any small tanks that weren’t worth fixing and use those most likely.

Don't know if there is a proper way, but i would look at someone's Harley and copy that, I'm sure those guys have got exhausts waxed.  I don't think you need a 4" pipe either.  My SR2 has a factory 2 into 1 manifold with a 2" pipe off that and through the wall

Sounds good, my plan rn is to go with 2” and do a double chamber thing like veg built.

Does anyone know the proper way to combine a 12/2 exhaust to one pipe through the wall? Would it need to be 4”?

I used a forklift battery charger on my 24v system. 240v single phase in, 24v out. I actually have it for sale for $200 if you are interested. 124 amp max output.

General Discussion / Re: Any steam engines left?
« on: March 01, 2022, 06:02:17 PM »
Ive also thought of having a steam engine around, there are plans to build a 4hp one that I found. I also thought about using a normal gas water heater (rated to 150-160psi max), running it on wood in the lower burn chamber to produce steam and deliver it to the engine at 125psi. These plans are for an engine that produces 4hp at 600rpm with 125psi of steam.

If I could safely build or buy a wood fired boiler and use the waste heat in my detached garage I could recapture a sizable percentage of the wasted energy. And use the 1.5-2kw produced by the engine to charge my battery bank on cold cloudy days.

That is young, sorry to hear that. As we all know, death does not respect age or station. I'm elated to read that he was a follower of Christ and is with Christ now. I'm sure if he had the chance he would tell all of us to think hard about our lives and to consider what happens after our time on earth.
