My Amish Lister dealer said that to determine the year of manufacture of an English CS Lister, you take the last 2 digits of the serial number and add 52.

Does anyone have this published from Lister?

Original Lister Cs Engines / Gib key removal tool
« on: July 25, 2006, 05:32:18 PM »
I placed some pictures in the gallery (under rleonard2) of the gib key puller and use.  It worked for me.  One broke loose with a "crack" then it was free.  I had soaked them in penetrating oil for several days before using the tool.

General Discussion / FIle space available in the Coppermine Gallery
« on: July 21, 2006, 02:47:20 PM »
I would like to upload new pictures for the group but cannot due to memory limitations.  I have used 1024K.  Can I get additional space or should I delete older pictures?

New to upload are radiator mounting, gib key puller, refinishing, etc.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Overhaul, Leaks, and Powdercoat
« on: June 17, 2006, 11:51:26 AM »
Hi Guys,
Been rather quiet here.  I know I've been busy.  I got the 16-2 back together and fired it up last night.  Started 1st crank.  Sounds a lot smoother and quieter now.  I do hear the gear noise of the new idler but I'm going to let things run in and see if that quiets down.

I did pistons and rings, both rod bearings, honed the cylinders (did not need boring), gaskets, etc.  I cleaned uo the fuel piping and allowed provisions for auxilary fuel feed e.g. wvo or wmo.

Bump clearance was right the 1st time.  I was glad that I did not have to pull the cylinders again.

My origional water outlets were internally rusted and one had a leak.  I have an Ottoman outlet pipe on it now but the dripping I noticed in it turns out to be a crack.  I need a set of Lister outlet elbows part number 18-2 c63.  Can anyone help?

Next will be to address any remaining mechanical issues then a paint job.  There is a business that does powdercoating here.  They did my frame and I sure wish I could do the engine.  Cure temp is 400F (204C).  I am hesitant to bake the engine at that high of a temperature.  Anyone try this?  Maybe clean out all fluids, and pull the injection pumps and lines?

Of course with complete disassembly I could do the individual parts.  But that is a lot of parts and a lot more work.

I'll probably end up spraying it.  I have had good luck with Sherwin Williams Tile-Clad paint.  It is a 2 part, hi-solids epoxy.  Either that or Rustoleum hunter green.

General Discussion / Hardware count
« on: June 08, 2006, 04:03:24 PM »
Years ago a friend started his spark plug count.  I caught on and added pneumatic tires.  On the Arborsite.com website, there was a cylinder count  Sort of a "Gee how much equipment have I accumulated" gauge!  So I had the list of pneumatic tires and spark plugs. I added internal combustion cylinders to the count.

Pneumatic tires - 93
Spark Plugs - 56
Cylinders - 79

Of course at any one time there at least a half dozen flats. Other cylinders are ommited such as hydraulic or in water pumps pumps. More of my equipment is diesel now depressing the spark plug count. 4 spark plugs are in chain saws, 2 in my old Disston DA211, 12 in the airplane, etc.

Of course the Lister can only contribute 2 in the cylinder collumn....

As I tell people, "I'm adding inventory for the estate sale".  LOL

What is your total?

Original Lister Cs Engines / Tricks pulling Cylinders?
« on: June 06, 2006, 06:33:27 PM »
In chasing some of the noises in my 16-2 I pulled the pistons.  The #1 rod bearing has wear and there is quite a bit of play in the upper piston grooves.

I'm pulling the cylinders to hone for new pistons and rings.  The heads are off and I have been able to get only one of the 4 spacers loose around the main studs in between the head and cylinder..  Soaking in WD-40 for a week now and tapping to try to install some vibration.  I bolted a chain to the cylinder and hoisted with an engine hoist, tapping to break free but no luck so far.

There is some rust around the cylinder studs in this area.

Suggestions?

Other Fuels / Crude Oil?
« on: May 20, 2006, 01:07:13 PM »
There are a lot of stripper wells around here.  I think that I can arrange a source of crude oil.  With proper filtration, any issues that I should be concerned with?  I'd like to run it in my Lister

Original Lister Cs Engines / Minor Rod bearing issue
« on: May 11, 2006, 02:46:23 PM »
Running the 16-2 last weekend, it seems mechanically loud.  When things were put away and I got the engine back in the shop I pulled the side cover.  The #2 rod had play.  I pulled the cap, inspected the bearing, (looks good, normal wear) and reassembled not on the crank.

Also seems to be a lot of gear noise.  Is that normal?

Measuring the crank throw, diameter is 2.497.  Using telescoping gauge and micrometer, the connecting rod bearing measures 2.505.  That is .008 play that is felt and heard.

My local Amish dealer has new rod bearings and I have a call in to him.  It is difficult to connect with him, but I wonder what the new ID of fresh rod bearings will measure.  Is it 2.503 or 2.500?   IIRC new undersize bearings are available as well.

I do not want to get into pulling the crank and regrinding the throws.  Only if I have to, I was thinking of getting the undersize bearings and boring to 2.499.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Bob

Lister Based Generators / Having trouble dissassembling a new ST-15
« on: May 03, 2006, 01:36:39 AM »
I spun up my new ST-15 generator last night.  Bearings are quite noisy so I want to do a repack and inspect.  I have the end bells loose but they are stuck on the shaft.  Soaking in penetrating oil now.  I did get the drive side bearing to move a wee bit but then it stopped too.  Suggestions?

Original Lister Cs Engines / Oil Pressure on 16-2
« on: April 27, 2006, 02:21:06 PM »
I am working on my origional CS 16-2.  There is a plug at the top of the oil pump where the old Lister books show a pressure gauge installed but do not indicate the range.  I'd like to re-install a gauge.  Those of you that have done so, what pressure are you seeing?

Lister Based Generators / Another pulley size question
« on: April 21, 2006, 03:08:40 PM »
Gentlemen of the group;
I am in the process of belting up my 16-2 Lister to a ST15 generator head that I just received.  Now I know that the engine cannot pull a full 15KW load.  I do not need nearly that capacity at this time.   My average load for the house is 2500W over the month.  That goes to 3500 in the summer with AC.  I do not know my peak loads (note to self - get a Kill a watt meter ordered). Lets estimate 30A @240 = 7200W momentary load when the AC kicks on.

The engine is rated at 16HP @ 850 RPM.  I have 23" heavy flywheels on the engine.  To sipn the generator @1800 I'm looking at a 10.86 dia. pulley.

In the interest of fuel savings, I do not need that kind of output on a regular basis.  To pull the avg. load of 3500W, someone here will suggest that I throw away my 16-2 (a nice origional one!) and replace it with a 6-1 + ST5.  This would be a plan, but I had another idea. (LOL)

Why not slow the engine down to reduce fuel consumption.  In very general terms, if a 16-2 @850 rpm becomes a 12-2 @ 650, then at 500 rpm, HP is roughly 9.  Using ~2hp/kw gets me closer to my average load while hopefully enjoying some fuel savings.  I can drop the pulley size to 6.39" to get 1800 on the generator.

I am going to use a serpentine belt and can machine my own pulley.

The local expert with at least 40 years experience with Listers said that they run these engines slow as needed with no detrimental effects whatsoever.  The Lister manual says to run the engine at rated speed or contact them.

Ant thoughts or comments?  Something I have overlooked?

Thanks,
Bob

Lister Based Generators / ST Generator Dimensions
« on: April 07, 2006, 08:27:48 PM »
Having just orderred a ST-15, I am doing some layout on the frame.  I have yet to find a listing of dimensions on the generator.  Needed are mounting hole size and locations, overall sizes, etc.  Better yet would be a PDF file showing end, side and top view to go along with it.  I can drop that in an Autocad drawing.

Can anyone point me to a site that has this info?

Thanks,
Bob

Original Lister Cs Engines / New Lister Owner
« on: March 28, 2006, 06:46:27 PM »
I got bit  by the bug...Hard....
Yesterday I brought home a nice used Lister 16-2 engine.  Probably a mid 70's built engine in service for a number of years in the local Amish community.  The engine was replaced for something electric start and with a smoother power.  It was claimed to be affecting the driven woodworking equipment.

I will perform an overhaul as part of the retoration.  I am capable of performing but quite light on Lister experience.  I am hoping the t the members can get me out of a bind if I cannot find the answer I need.

I have a gasket set, fresh injectors, filter and other misc parts.  Should make a nice engine when done.  May go the powdercoat route as there is a new reasonable powdercoating company here.

Plans are to build up a gen set with it.

Regards,
Bob
