Things I want to Buy / Need .030 oversize 8-1 alloy piston
« on: July 13, 2010, 02:39:14 PM »
A friend called today looking for this piston.  Anyone have one available?  As an alternative a new 8-1 cylinder and standard piston may work.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Another Rescue Engine
« on: June 08, 2010, 01:22:02 PM »
After nearly a year of patience and waiting, I was able to acquire this 12-2, #5001227 Lister.  This engine shows very little signs of wear and virtually no abuse.  It was installed improperly with a drive pulley at the end of the crankshaft.  With a tight belt, it quickly fatigued and cracked the crankshaft.  It was removed from service and has been sitting ever since.  The former owner was keeping it to restore for his personal collection.  Sadly he passed away suddenly and it never got to achieve his goal.

There are a few missing parts and some things need to be tidied up, but this will make a fine engine.  I should have most of the spares I need.

I believe that someone allowed the keyways to be wallowed out on the flywheels.  They were remachined with taper lock bushings.  Also, I've not seen a Lister flywheel casting with pulley attachment lugs on it before.

After the customary kerosine bath things started to look much better.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Looking for a 12-2 Crankshaft
« on: December 12, 2009, 02:29:58 PM »
I found a nice 12-2.  It was installed with the pulley attached far out on the end of the crankshaft.  Within a short time the crankshaft broke internally.  The engine has been sitting ever since.  It appears to be in great shape and have low hours.  A few missing parts here and there but not a big deal.  The owner had a replacement crankshaft for it stashed away, but it can not be found.  Sadly, he passed away last summer.

We've looked for the crank in his shop but have come up empty.  It might be there, but it might not.  Anyone have a NOS or used one n good condition?

Mr George Helmuth, Owner of Helmuth and Son Engine Shop, Arthur, IL. passed away Sunday July 5 2009 at the early age of 63.  His death was sudden and very unexpected.  His knowledge of Lister CS and the entire line, Petter, Deitz, antique machinery, his friendship and service to the community will be deeply missed.  Services were held today, July 8, 2009 at his residence.

I saw my first CS, a 3 hp, running at his shop pulling a generator for the lights.  From that point on, the interest in the Listers and the seeds of a friendship were sewn.  Over the next several years we went to shows, spent countless hours together and he taught me a few things bout the Listers.  Saturday lunch at the R&I in downtown Arthur was a fairly regular event.  He had forgotten more than I'll ever know about the engines.

I bought my engines from him and although he hated to part with them I think that he was glad to see them find new life and a caring owner.  We went thru the rebuild process and he was mindfull that I was doing things right.

I referred many forum members to him for parts.  He helped many members here.

George, I'll miss you.

I uploaded several Lister project pictures to my Facebook account.  Many have been posted here over the years but if someone wants to review jump over to facebook.com and seach for me; Robert Leonard.  The right one is me peering into the crankcase of a 16-2

I'll take the camera and capture some images.

Lister Based Generators / Motor Generator question
« on: July 19, 2008, 12:28:45 PM »
At a local plant, there once was a computer center.  The room was fed with a motor generator to provide clean power to it.  I made an inquirry and the unit might be available.

It has been years since I saw it, but it was a motor, probably 480 3ph, driving a generator with a large flywheel between them.

Any reason not to pursue it?  Were the old mainframes run off of anything other than 60Hz AC?

I am sure that it was a top quality unit when installed.  I am hoping that it would be a upgrade over the ST15 generator run by my 16-2 Lister CS.  I am working at getting in there to inspect it.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Awful quiet in here!
« on: July 02, 2008, 02:11:07 PM »
I know it is the middle of summer, but does anyone have Lister projects going on?

Has the high price of diesel dampened interest in these prime movers?

I have delayed the painting of my 6-1 until I sort out some minor mechanical details.  I expect to have those resolved within a couple of weeks, then commence a teardown and painting.

I'll post pictures of progress if anyone is interested.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Bob vs. Lister Flywheel
« on: May 22, 2008, 01:47:58 PM »
I need to get the flywheels off the 16-2 to reposition and replace the seals.  Also there is a pulley for a fan that I will not need so that has to come off.  A month of soaking in oil and running the engine with the gib keys out would not break things loose.  I even gently heated with no luck.  It was time to get serious.

I hunted around for a puller.  I hit up the local heavy equipment dealer and several large farm tractor shops but they had nothing big enough.  We have an industrial equipment rental place and I stopped in there.  They had Enerpac units but they were way too small.

I had a piece of 3/4 plate so I plasma cut 2 discs.   I machined a fillet in one to clear the radius on the hub of the flywheel.  I drilled and tapped holes then cut a section of the back plate to slip it behind the flywheel.  I picked up a length of 3/4-10 grade 8 threaded rod and nuts from Fastenall and put it all together.

I have a small enerpac cylinder but that would not break it loose.  Tightening up on the nuts, finally there was that pop and it broke loose.  After some movement the little cylinder helped move the wheel about 1/2 inch then I reset the nuts and moved it again.

Finally both wheels were off, nothing was broken, or hammered on, and no torches were needed.  Everything was done safely.

Pardon my mess in the shop.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Repair to High Pressure line
« on: May 19, 2008, 12:49:06 AM »
I am having some leakage at the high pressure line at the injector fitting.  Inspection of the ferrule attached to the pipe shows some deformation.  It seems that the ferrule does not fit well in the nut and pressure is not applied uniformly when the nut is drawn up, resulting in a leak.

Has anyone performed repairs to these lines?  I want to machine a new ferrule, carefully cut off the old one, and silver solder the new one on.

Any reason why this would not work?

Original Lister Cs Engines / 16-2 Progress
« on: May 09, 2008, 01:42:18 PM »
I am keeping busy on the Lister 16-2 project.  Here is the current status.  I am finally getting her back together with fresh pistons, rings bearings, and gaskets.  The next area of attention will be the injection pumps, injectors, and the entire fuel system.

Bob

I discovered what did this engine in.  The locknut that held the #2 cam follower for the injector pump came loose, then fell off.  The cam follower was free to rotate instead of tracking on the cam.  The follower was skidding and tore up the roller and cam.

With the #2 injection pump not working the engine had very low power.  It was traded in on something else at least 25 years ago and had been sitting ever since.

That is all repaired now with a fresh cam, new roller and pin, and is as good as new.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Bump clearances
« on: May 05, 2008, 07:34:33 PM »
I am to the point of setting the piston to head clearances on the 16-2 I am working on.  Per Lister specs, the clearances are different for the 6 and 12/2 and the 8 and 16/2.  They are .045-.050 and .075-.080 respectively.

I was thinking about this.  The 8 and 16-2 do not have changeover valves and therefore have a fixed compression ratio.  Is this the reason for the different specs?
