Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Electric starter
« on: May 23, 2020, 02:54:26 AM »
Thanks for the reply, Hugh.  I've used this set up on three CS engines, so far.  No problems whatsoever.  -- Cheers,

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Electric starter
« on: May 21, 2020, 08:19:08 PM »
Hi, Guys-
I've seen several articles about electric starters for Lister CS engines and I just had to put in my two cents worth!
My starter system is sooo simple and inexpensive!  A golf cart type starter/generator ($125) a belt ($10-15) a (small belt pulley $10) a little bit of simple shop work! A picture is worth a thousand words - so check the attached photo.  push the starter button, pull the tensioning lever and, Voila! - She spins over perfectly and easily.  Cranking is straight forward.  When you activate compression release and she cranks, release tension on the belt.  If the run time is going to be more than just a minute or two, Kick the starter belt off with a stick or tool so the starter/generator isn't driven unnecessarily. Easy to do.
Now I wired my starter/generator for start only -- didn't need the generate function.  But if you want some serious 12 volt charging for say, a battery bank - this will do it!

Things I want to Buy / Re: -Start-0-Matic Items

HI, Hugh-
Thanks for the reply.  You're right -- freight would probably be a killer!  However, if you could give me an approximate guestimate of what the weight and size (1 pallet?) might be and the shipping point at your end - I'll crunch some numbers and see if it might be doable.  Down here, we have most of the big name freight companies ( Yellow or YRC, Old Dominion, Fastenal, AAA  cooper, etc.).   I'm in Ocala, Florida.
Also, could give me your asking price for everything?  We might be able to work something out.  -- Thanks and Cheers,

Things I want to Buy / -Start-0-Matic Items
« on: May 16, 2019, 11:31:31 PM »
Hi, Folks-
I have recently acquired two Start-O-Matic Lister engines (8/1 @ 850RPM).  These are engines only.  I am looking for Bases, Generators, Controls, etc. ---- anything associated with the Start-O-Matic system.  I know that I can set them up as regular Lister 6/1's or 8/1's, but I would really like to restore them as original Start-O-Matics!  Any help would be appreciated.   Thanks!

Listeroid Engines / Re: Weight of 6-1 with 5kw ST head on frame w/wheels
« on: September 15, 2018, 07:19:33 PM »
I have a similar set-up that I've had to move around, load/un-load, etc.  The engine weighs around 600 Lbs., the Generator head around 300 Lbs. and the rest around 250 lbs.  - so total around1150 - 1200 lbs.  Won't miss it by far! ---- Charlie

For Sale is my recently completed Lister TS2 generator project.  The engine has been gone through with cylinders honed, new rings, new gaskets, new filters, etc., etc.  The generator end bearing has been replaced.  The generator control box has been re-wired and filter capacitors replaced.  The generator is a LeRoy Somer 8KW Brushless Alternator -- 120/240 VAC @ 1800 RPM.  The unit was the power source for a "Light Tower" -- used in night time road construction.  The unit looks and runs like new! It has been run and load tested for several hours since overhaul.  Price is $2950.  I am located in Hernando, FL. -- About 20 miles SW of Ocala, FL.

I have completed the Power Solutions Listeroid project that I started and it is now for sale.  It is a 12KW ST type generator head powered by a Power Solutions (JKSON by George Utter) 20/2 2 cylinder Listeroid.  The engine and generator are new (2007) with only "Break-in" time -- about 10 hours or so.  The engine was originally rated 20 HP at 1000 RPM, but I have slowed it down to 720 RPM for quieter operation, longevity, and reduced fuel consumption.  As such, the unit now puts out around 8 KW or so.  The mounting frame has "Double" shock mounts.  It has electric starting using a starter/generator.  All components -i.e., starter/generator, filters, belts, idler, electrical components, etc., etc. - are brand new.  It has a 55 gallon drum for the convective cooling system.  Unit comes with lots of spares (filters, gaskets, etc., etc.).  It has been test run with a 5 KW load for several hours ---- no problems.  I will demonstrate the unit to buyer upon pick up.  If not fully satisfied, all monies will be returned.  ----  $4995.

Listeroid Engines / NEW Listeroid --another issue! - oil dipstick
« on: April 06, 2018, 06:49:52 PM »
This one has me dumbfounded!  The dipstick - when inserted - will go in front of - or behind the delivery pipe on the left side of the oil manifold.  The threaded end of the dipstick will thread into the crankcase, either way  - but only with some difficulty.  The dipstick is in a bind, either way.  The dipstick is pressing hard against the delivery pipe - doesn't matter if its in front or behind.  Ideally, it wants to go right through the center of the delivery pipe! I wonder how many hours before the dipstick wore through the pipe?  -- or how many hours before the pipe wore through the dipstick -- which would then be devoured by the crank and rods???  I mean- who engineers this stuff???!!  Anyhow, I have enclosed some pics of the mess.  For now, I'm going to plug the hole with a bolt and insert the dipstick periodically to check the oil level.  Suggestions,  anyone?? ---- Charlie

Addendum:  I just found an example of a Power Line twin that had a piece of straight wire hanging from the backside of the unit on a piece of chain.  Upon closer examination, I noticed that the engine had the same dipstick arrangement as mine and that the owner had come up with the same solution that I proposed ---- so I guess that others have had the same issue!

Listeroid Engines / Re: NEW Listeroid issue
« on: April 06, 2018, 02:48:24 AM »
You guys are really a wealth of information!!  You have shed a bright light on things and confirmed my suspicions!  I thought that the slobbering was probably a case of rings not being seated -- the longer I ran it, the better the slobbering got --- until I created an "oil hurricane" in the crankcase!  I will revisit the situation in the morning and return things to their previous state.  Then I'll double check the oil level and remark the dipstick.  I'm confident that that will cure my issue.  Seems that I created the issue!  Learned something, Tho!  I'll keep you posted! --- Cheers,
                                                                                                                                                                  Charlie

Listeroid Engines / NEW Listeroid issue
« on: April 05, 2018, 11:01:19 PM »
Here's an issue that just cropped up today with my NEW Listeroid project.
When I first got the unit, I noticed that it had blown some very oily soot out of one of the exhaust mufflers.  After I got it running and the pumps balanced, the problem more or less went away.  The oil level was just barely touching the dipstick. I removed the back crankcase cover to check things out (in order to verify the crankshaft throws while I was going through the balancing process) and I discovered that the oil "splash paddles" were turned 90 degrees from where they should be (in other words, sort of "knife edge" to the direction of rotation).  I turned them 90 degrees to achieve maximum "splash".  I added a couple of quarts or so to bring it up to the second mark on the stick - which I assumed was the "full" mark.  After putting the cover on, I fired it up and noticed that the cylinder that had the oily muffler earlier began to smoke (white smoke).  It rapidly got worse and began to "run away".  I shut off the fuel and it was still trying to run.  I decompressed it and it stopped.  Soooo, it looks like the oil level is too high (dipstick obviously miss-marked) and/or too much "splash" going on.  It is trying to run on the lube oil getting by the rings ---  blowing some oil droplets out of that one muffler.  When the oil level was lower and the "splash paddles" were turned in a "knife edge" direction, there was no problem - (well -- just a teeny trace of light smoke from the one cylinder).
So my thoughts are that I have too much oil in the crankcase, at the moment, and also maybe too much splash (or both).  the one cylinder that smokes slightly may have to "break in" some more (remember, this is a new unit ---- I doubt if it has more than a couple of hours or so on it).
I plan on reducing the oil level back to where it was and turning the "splash paddles back to their original position and checking it out again.  Meanwhile --- any suggestions??

Listeroid Engines / NEW Listeroid update
« on: April 04, 2018, 03:19:23 PM »
Hi, Guys-
Well, I've been pretty busy with the listeroid project.  I had to track down and fix several "Gremlins" -- leaky banjo fittings at the pumps, purge fuel system, replace (with lighter) and reset governor spring, experiment with several muffler configurations (finally settled on standard Lister type mufflers), balance fuel pumps, adjust linkage (several times), etc, etc.  Spent many hours getting the flywheels balanced properly.  Finally got it right when I realized that the crank throws (on a two cylinder engine) are opposite and therefore balance weights must be opposite (Duh!).  It runs pretty smoothly, now -- just a little more tweaking.  The starter/generator driving one flywheel works great - and, in my opinion,  is the easiest and cheapest way to crank one of these beasts.  I've used this system twice, now, and it works great!  I'm waiting on a new idler/tensioner assembly to come in so I can belt up the generator head.  When I get that done and make a few more adjustments,  I'll post pics of the finished product. ------ Cheers,

Listeroid Engines / Pulley
« on: March 17, 2018, 05:14:18 PM »
Hello, all-
My NEW Listeroid project is moving right along.  I seem to have run into a stumbling block, however, in my search for a pulley.  I need a 7 to 8 inch diameter 8 rib split taper pulley ( or something close -- 1 1/2" generator shaft).  If anyone has something close to this or can point me towards a source, I would really appreciate it!  Thanks! -- Charlie

Listeroid Engines / NEW Listeroid
« on: March 08, 2018, 11:03:05 PM »
HI, folks-
I just acquired a new - and I do mean NEW - Listeroid project.  It's a Power Solutions 2/20 with a 12 KW ST type generator head.  The engine has never been in service.   In fact, it has never been hooked to a cooling system!  It came with two large boxes of spares - rings, valves, gaskets, hoses, pipes, etc.  It's mounted on a steel frame with rubber shock mounts -- well done.  I don't have a clue as to who made the 'Power Solutions' brand.  I would appreciate any and all info on this unit.  Pictures will follow, shortly.  The unit is rated at 20 HP @ 1000 RPM.  I don't plan on running it at that speed, though.  I'm going to test run it a bit and find it's "Sweet Spot" - hopefully around 6-700-- RPM and then change out the generator pulley accordingly.  Should be able to pull somewhere between 7 to 9 KW off of it with no problem.
--- OK, I've added PICS.  I'm going to do a golf cart starter/generator like I did on my 10/1 Lovson.  It's simple and it works great!  I'll have to downsize the bushed pulley on the generator when I slow down the engine (to somewhere around 650 RPM).  If anybody can give me any info as to availability of bushed pulleys, I'd appreciate it -- They're sort of hard to find!
OH!  - And it does look like the unit came from George at Utterpower somewhere around 2007-8.  Thanks, 38ac!
            Cheers,
                Charlie
