I think I`ve got it, what about organ donation? Any politico found guilty of failure in their duties could be forced to hand over their ovaries or testicles to prevent them from further contaminating the world. Too radical?

What about something more biblical, an eye for a lie a tooth for an untruth. The possibilities are endless. I read a book once called 101 things to do with a dead cat. How about 101 things to do with a useless politician?

China, India and other developing countries don`t have these rules or don`t implement them. We just aren`t ever going to be able to compete in a global economy if we allow idiots in air conditioned offices to make these sorts of decisions with no understanding of the consequences, while replacing skilled men with untrained temporary labour.

I'm not saying we should pump any and all crap out Mindlessly but clearly a more sensible approach would make things much better for industry.
Why not? The politicos do it all day everyday. If you want to reduce toxic emissions we should start in Canberra, by trying to think of a way to recycle a politician. All much too sour and bitter to eat.

Before my accident I worked as a maintenance fitter in a sawmill owned by a very large multi national company. As you can imagine any one of these enormous machines could kill a man in a heartbeat. In an attempt to improve safety, head office implemented a one size fits all policy to be rolled out worldwide.

All employees to wear hard hats, steel toed boots, safety glasses, gloves, padded cotton trousers and high viz long sleeved shirts (tucked in at all times and buttoned at the wrists), any breach of this would result in dismissal. They spent a fortune fencing every single moving part in the plant, making access for regular maintenance(oiling, greasing and visual inspection) impossible. The temperature in summer in Australia regularly tops 50 degrees centigrade and the local hospital was inundated with unconscious workers with heat stroke.

They implemented a world wide health and safety training scheme which encouraged the workers to report each other to the safety officer for any hazardous activity. In 3 years we lost 30% of our skilled personnel for breaches of health and safety(including one health and safety officer). These were replaced by unskilled and inexperienced casual labourers.

The output from the plant dropped from 90 cubic meters of finished timber a day to 30 cubic meters a day. The factory is now running at a loss, threatening the livelihood of all the workers.

China, India and other developing countries don`t have these rules or don`t implement them. We just aren`t ever going to be able to compete in a global economy if we allow idiots in air conditioned offices to make these sorts of decisions with no understanding of the consequences, while replacing skilled men with untrained temporary labour.

Rant over.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Listeroid Metro 6/1 Cylinder Head Cover

Wouldn't be too worried about it.
Most of the time I left mine off so I could oil the rockers and make sure there was a pool of oil still in there.
No oil runs down tot he engine so dirt is not a worry. Way the covers fit they wouldn't keep anything much out anyway.

Here we get mud wasps which want to block up every hole and cavity they find and get under things. They would love to get under that cover and make their dirt nests but they wouldn't go near anything open and exposed.  I put a plastic bag over the top  and tape it best I can to keep everything out when the engine isn't being used..... as in the last 4 years.  :0)
Don`t start me on mud wasps, too late, you have.
Little bastards get in everywhere. If the mower or chainsaw won`t start it`s probably because the exhaust is filled with mud.
Last time I fired up my bench grinder nearly killed me, 2 pounds of mud let go at 2400 RPM! Apparently we are living through
one of the worst mass extinctions in global history, these little buggers need to be next on that list.

There is no piece of machinery that can`t be fixed given enough money, determination and man hours.(with the possible exception of space debris/space shuttles etc.)
If it`s rare or old it`s worth the effort but sadly we live in an internet connected world in which mechanically deficient chancers
believe they can make a quick buck without having to break a sweat. Perhaps it`s time for those of us that are mechanically inclined to go on strike. If we all stopped servicing stuff and paying too much for spares to keep numpties in a job things might improve.

Affirmative, the gear is of quite hardened material. I have not tried cracking one loose, but that should work OK as long as you don't have an accident that damages the crankshaft in the process.

Thanks Gary, I`ve been splitting bearings off shafts for 30 plus years with no problem, so if this one goes wrong it`s because you put some sort of Dieselgman hex on me. Looking forward to the challenge and I think I can overcome the issue of alignment. Time will tell. The worst that can happen is that I will have to buy a new crankshaft, which is where this conversation started.

Sound like a very challenging operation. Please let me know when you get delivery.

I am assuming that these are very hard so the old one could probably be removed by cutting most of the way through with a disk grinder and then splitting it with a cold chisel.

Hi Brian, Your best bet in the USA would be Gary at Diesel Electric(AKA Dieselgman) in the UK you could try Sleeman Hawken.

I`m pretty sure that casting could be successfully welded using either a TIG or MIG welder. The trick would be to bolt it to a steel plate to stop it distorting during the process.

The gears are available - just a bit obscure because only the crankshaft forging folks will be using them during crank assembly. I think my supplier can source them though.

Hi Gary, I would certainly be interested in one of these as the crankshaft is well within wear tolerance, so I guess the challenge is how much and how long. Could a pinion gear be shipped direct to me in Australia rather than shipped to you in the USA and then to me?
Anyone know how to fit one of these, are they a press fit or they heated to shrink onto the shaft? Would heating effect the hardening/tempering of the pinion gear?

Thanks Broncodriver99, pretty much what I thought. Shame the pinion gear is not available, would have been easy to cut the old one off with a gas axe and press a new one onto the shaft.
I think I will dress up the existing one and then make an offset pivot for the idler gear to reduce the backlash.

Everything else / Re: Blasphemy..... Solar power.

Here in Australia, we only get six cents per Kilowatt hour from the utility companies. We also have to pay $150 a quarter for the man to come and read the meter.  Grrrr.

I feel your pain.  And to think I was complaining about 15 cents a KW buy back here in Hawaii.  Gosh, they're only making 100% per day instantaneously on my investment as they charge > 30 cents retail - that's me when I'm not selling to them.  "Gee Whiz Aunt Minnie how can they make a living with only 35,600% return per year?"  The $150 a quarter would really frost my sack too.  How much do they charge you when you buy electricity from them?
With Government taxes it works out around 26 cents a Kwh. so they are making more than 400% on the solar power I export.
What really gets me is that they can`t even maintain supply, yesterday in Victoria they had a hot day so a lot of people turned on the AC and overloaded the supply. 50,000 homes and businesses without power. The government and shareholders must be very proud. I guess disconnecting everyone is one way to meet the emissions reduction targets.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Governor weights out... need more weight ?
« on: January 28, 2018, 11:56:30 AM »
The formula for this is Force=mass multiplied by velocity squared divided by radius. The problem with this is that the radius varies as the governor weights get thrown out by centrifugal force. So yes it is a non linear progression but I am not convinced that these calculator programs will be totally accurate. Starfire is probably right and they will get you very close to where you need to be. I`d love to know how much that differs from my cigarette packet calculation.

Thanks Mike but I`m not sure how that would work with my ST twin if I was running the CS. The problem is that it is a
Startomatic so when stopping both decompressor levers automatically engage.

Hi 32coupe. I am not sure if my logic will stand up to scrutiny but the designed increase in RPM from 650 to 1000 is an increase of nearly 54%. While a decrease in governor weight from 13.5oz to 9.7oz is a decrease of only around 28%.

If you only intend to run this a around 720 RPM I would suggest 13.5oz multiplied by 650 and divided by 720 gives a correct weight of 12.2oz.

I would be tempted to get a set of 6/1 weights and grind 1.3oz off each and see how she goes, alternatively someone might be able weigh a set of 8/1 weights they would probably be pretty close to what you need.

Been raining here most of the day so I`ve been trawling the internet looking for a replacement fuel injector pump. I would prefer to keep with CAV or Bryce.

The original damaged pump is a CAV BPF1B70CS6253. On the old engine data sheets this is listed as the correct CAV pump for a CS 6/1. The problem is that when I look at the Bryce data sheets it gives Bryce FBOAB070C6655 or BPF1B070CS6655.

Which is it BPF1B70CS6253 or BPF1B70CS6655?

I have found a Bryce FBOAB070C665_ for sale in the UK for £125. C6655 as opposed to C665 is this the correct pump?
