Hey Glort, take a look at this; https://www.gasweld.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=alternator

Several on offer, sadly no pictures. I suspect those labelled as "taper" will be a single bearing. there are a couple that are not "taper" including one three phase. If its just down the road go take a look and report what you find, PLEASE.

Hey Glort, I share your frustration with postal/delivery charges. I ordered some bits and pieces ten days ago, both with $10 delivery. Guess what, the bits from the UK arrived today having travelled half way around the world by airmail. I am still waiting for the bits from Queensland which is only a four hour drive away.
Go figure,

Lister Based Generators / Re: 6Kw Markon

Hey Mike, on the mechanical side of things I`d be very tempted to mount your pulley on a short shaft, maybe 40mm diameter, with two pillar bearings to take the angular stresses of a tensioned belt. Might be worth using some sort of flexible coupling to the generator to allow for any misalignment.

If you want the electrical info contact Lucien Nunes on the UK stationary engine forum, He will know if anyone does. Apologies to this forum for recommending someone knowledgeable on another. (Hey Ade don`t suppose you could recruit him to our forum, maybe offer him free diodes or something).

Hi basewindow, what a bloody good idea, if we all signed up as members of these BS forums we might get the true word out there. We could also have fun seeing who was first to get banned. Perhaps we should run a competition to see how many politically correct forums we can get banned from in a week. The prize for the winner would have to be a golden Glort.

Yep, I think the line shaft is a go. Used a lot of them when I worked as a maintenance fitter in a sawmill. Mike is absolutely right about having more than two bearings for two reasons first the alignment has to be spot on or you will either break the shaft or get through a lot of bearings. The second reason is that where I worked we had six meter long shafts with multiple bearings and pulleys, every time a belt broke we had to undo all the bearings to fit a new one. We took to fitting ten belts to each pulley at a time, one fitted to the pulley with nine cable tied to the frame to use as spares.

This problem was my reason for suggesting tires. The RPM of the tire is determined by the diameter of the pulley on the line shaft so for example with the shaft doing 600 rpm and a 200 mm pulley, a regular car tire would be doing less than 200 rpm.
The smaller the pulley and the larger the tire the lower the rpm.

Hydraulic pump is on my wish list to drive a press and broaching tool for cutting keyways in pulleys. It will also be connected to a log splitter, too old for that sort of sh1t now.

Probably go with your 240 volt AC suggestion and then rectify it. Been searching for a suitable head for ages. I did discover that Gasweld sell a range of generator heads in Australia, sadly no pictures just descriptions and prices.

I believe I should build the set up near to the house, this would enable harvesting of heat for hot water and etc. Not sure how to overcome the noise to keep the wife happy.

Further to my last post I could build a system that would generate DC electricity to power my grid tied inverter. This would provide me with the electricity my home needs during the evening and also export any surplus to the grid. As far as I know grid tied solar systems aren`t limited to the hours of daylight. So I could end up with them having to pay me rather than the other way around.

Hey Glort, I think you and I are thinking along the same lines. Having a generator that burns WVO looks like the way forward. Utilizing the waste heat from said generator to provide hot water and heating/cooling to your home looks like a win win to me. I was wondering about building a system with a power shaft with pulleys for generator head, compressor, air conditioning, water pump, hydraulic pump and etc. I was wondering if anyone had ever tried using car wheels/tires as a means of transferring power from a flywheel on a drive shaft to a flywheel on a generator. pump and etc? I am thinking of a tire mounted on a lever with a spring to provide the required contact pressure. Might work well as a means to couple my CS to the drive shaft, might also help with the flicker a lot of people experience with single cylinder diesel generation. A tire could also be partially filled with water to provide extra flywheel mass.

know exactly where you are coming from, I just ordered $2000 dollars worth of treated timber from my local building supplier. Cheeky b*stards wanted to charge me for delivery. I hung up on them. Guess what they called me back to arrange free delivery. What a surprise!

Hi Fellas, People should be allowed and even encouraged to say or post what they really believe. I am sick ant tired of political correctness. It allows politicians and other high profile people to avoid dealing with difficult issues like racism, same sex marriage, child abuse and sexual exploitation. None of them have the b*lls to say anything that might be misconstrued as evidence of some sort of "ism" They therefore say nothing meaningful at all. I guess I just fell into their trap by mentioning the word b*lls. In the politically correct world that is classed as sexism as half the population don`t have any.

Speak/post your mind and to hell with the idiots and intellectually castrated.

Rant over, feeling much better thanks,

The only thing I learn every day is how little I know, a life time of studying and learning and you guys still leave me baffled.
Well done with firing up the Chinese monster, hope she runs well and gives good service.

Good evening john, looks like you have got yourself a beauty there. I wish I could attend the Rusty Iron Rally but I no longer drive after a motoring accident, PTSD. I will try to persuade my wife to drive me there but unless they have sewing classes, Bromeliads or handbags it`s probably a no go, she doesn

Aw Casey,
where`s your cynicism?

Good rant, nice to find you waxing lyrical.

Knew an industrialist when I lived in the UK, b*stard claimed to be a socialist and even ran in the local elections. Laid off all his 400 workers and shut the factory so he could transfer production to China. More profit in importing goods than manufacturing and exporting them. No wonder we are all in debt to China when our own industry is run by greedy, selfish twats like him.

I never run E10 in any home engines, as you say it is hydroscopic and causes too many problems. The problem with the Briggs and Stratton lawnmower is that there is no fuel filter, just a strainer in the fuel tank. Main jet keeps clogging with bits  of grass. One day I`ll get around to fitting an in line fuel filter. That`s if the bottom bearing doesn`t fail first.

Couldn`t agree more, I had a Victa 2 stroke lawnmower, got it second hand six years old. scraped it this year because the chassis had rusted out. Engine probably still had ten years left in it. That said, it drank fuel and two stroke oil. I replaced it last year with a top of the range modern Victa mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine. Nothing but trouble, carburettor off it weekly cos it won`t start . It`s also developed a nasty vibration which I think is probably the lower main bearing, I`ll know for sure when the bottom oil seal fails and spits sh!T everywhere.

I am a big believer in the idea that you get what you pay for, Chinese is as good as any product, if you want to compete with them you need to find a way of producing a better quality product at the same price.

The alternative is to buy old, quality machinery, restore it and enjoy problem free use for the rest of your life, which I think is the whole purpose of forums like this.

Kubota knock off, what a surprise! How do the Chinese get away with stealing/reverse engineering other peoples intellectual property? If I were to do that here I would very quickly find myself in court facing huge damages for breach of copyright and infringement of patent.

That said I own several machines with Chinese Honda copy engines and most of them perform well enough but I doubt there longevity.

So give it a bit of love and attention and it should last for years.
