Listeroid Engines / Re: It's all YOUR fault!!
« on: January 19, 2018, 08:12:12 AM »
why don't you just pull the flywheels and put them on a piece of bar stock on some sawhorses and settle this once and for all. find out where the heavy spot is and make it so the key is on the top. measure  how heavy that spot is with bucket and string and repeat on the other wheel.  put them back on and add or remove equal weight on each wheel until it stops pounding. I know they are heavy and it is a pita. you have talked about how you really really don't want to do it ever since I joined this froum but at this point you have more time and energy into pissing around with it than you would if you spent 1 afternoon just balancing it once and for all. just my opinion.....

I do not think so. I tried to listen while I had the tractor running today. Sort of hard to say as it kinda sounds like Kaaa Kaaa Kaaa kaaa any way when it's running. noisy little bugger.  look up that B6000 on youtube and you will see what I mean.

it just has a dummy oil light. it goes out after about 3 cranks of the starter and never comes back on. I was sort of hesitant to put a lot of money into the tractor as I didn't know a lot about it. I had no history on what had happened or if the injection pump was good ect. ect. I sort of rolled the dice and  bought bearings gaskets and pistons,  touched up the valves and put it all together.  I have a bunch of pull start 10hp air cooled diesels I got sort of carried away and bought on sale. I was pretty tempted to try to mount one of them in it.  It would be hard  to do because the tiny little  tractor is built like a real tractor with bellhousing clutch and transmission. not just  a cheesy little v belt driven transmission. Back to the rod question I guess I am just wondering if it will be the difference between a 10,000 hour engine and a 2,500 hour engine or if it will be fairly rapid failure with a rod through the block. I guess time will tell......

how much is too much clearance on a rod? I picked up a B6000 Kubota basket case last summer. It has a little 13HP 2 cyl water cooled diesel (ZL600). http://mountainkubota.com/MTK..EngineSpecsB6000.html
It looks pretty over engineerd for the power it puts out. I had a bitch of a time finding parts for it but  finally got them from Greece. the crank was way off, out of round and under sized. I took it to a local engine shop along with the undersize bearings mounted in the rods and he sat on it for a month. finally I went to repo it and come to find out he botched it a bit. the one rod came out to .001 clearance but the other is at .007      I figured hey what can you do so the last few days I froze my but off out in the shop putting it all together.  got it running and seems to wok fine plowed snow with it in the driveway for about an hour today. I wonder how long will it last like this........

General Discussion / Re: diesel tank repair
« on: December 17, 2017, 08:18:21 AM »
i have brazed a lot of tanks, sometmes if they are real bad seems like you have to get so much of the bottom hot it warps and then cracks as it cools down. not sure what the solution is for that.  I have also used por15 tank coating. I soaked the inside of the tank with muratic acid from the hardware store untill it was clean metal and then dry it out. then you dump the por15 in and roll it around. it coats the inside of the tank. I have also used krem tank coating. it is cheaper than por 15 but seems to peel off after a few years. I have also used the little tubes of kwick steel putty that you knead together.  i just stick it right over the hole from the outside (with the tank drained and cleaned) and let it set for 20 min. little dap of kwick steel seems to last just as good as anyting. JB weld is not worth the powder to blow it to hell. if you do want to use something like it order some fastweld 10. it is gray and 2 part like jb but is every thing jb weld claims to be. sets faster and is way more durable.  what an odesey of glue I have been on now that i think of it.

I really liked my harbor freight needle scaler for needle gunning out the inside of my engine. I also liked how once it chipped out the slag it seemed to peen the surface and tighten it all up.

lister LR1 4hp 1800rpm diesel engine. this was sort of a winter project, i put several new gaskets and seals on it. new brushes in the electric starter. built the skid you see and painted the whole thing. I was going to mount an ST generator head on it but am considering selling it to fund other projects if any body is interested. otherwise I will just keep it as a backup to my backups backup. thanks. located in north west Pennsylvania.

Lister Based Generators / Re: induction motor as generator fail
« on: April 10, 2017, 11:28:25 PM »
Well I got it working, after quite a bit of trial and error (2) 20uF caps between 2 legs and (3) more between the other leg. Yields about 250v no load then when I fire up a hand held grinder the voltage drops down to 110. If I grind real hard and stall It out the v drops off to nothing and the field collapses. It is weird to watch the frequency/voltage go all over the place as you grind hard then let off and restart it. Not my cup of tea and my curiosity is satisfied. It could work tied into a grid where you get a real steady load and have everything dialed in but for a stand alone generator that I  want to just plug stuff in and have it work it is no good. I didn’t realize it would be so wild with the fluctuations. Never the less thanks for all the help getting it going but now I have to find something else to do with this little engine.

Those look like motor start capacitors, not run capacitors.  They will not survive in this application.  Motor run capacitors are typically in a metal can, with much smaller ratings per size.  They must dissipate a significant amount of heat.

i was wondering the same thing, they did say run in the description . i will have to do a little more research.

Lister Based Generators / Re: induction motor as generator fail

thanks for the responses, i have it coupled direct so idle is around 800 rpm and full governed rpm is around 1800 with my laser tach. caps are hooked together and then attached to L1 L2 L3. i will try hooking it up with each cap hooked to the neutral attached to 6-5-4 leads  wired in star next time i am out there. i want to run a 3 phase motor i have with it and it would be nice to have as a backup generator.  i bought this engine on a whim and can't come up with a use for it. too heavy for a lawn mower, too weak for my splitter ect.ect. thought it may be handy to drag around and use as portable power to run the block heater on the backhoe or dozer when they are out of reach or something. i built the skid out of material i had laying around, an old 3 phase motor out of the dumpster at work, and the doghouse i took off my other liseroid project. don't really have anything into it but time and the cost of the engine.

Lister Based Generators / induction motor as generator fail
« on: April 05, 2017, 11:39:57 PM »
I have heard the urban legend of an induction motor as generator for years, I have a little pamphlet from lindseys bookstore entitled "alternator secrets" I bought in the 90's. I also used info from this link http://www.redrok.com/cimtext.pdf. well I set up a nice 3 phase 5hp 1725rpm motor coupled to the little 4hp lister LR1 I bought over the winter. made a nice base and used the doghouse from my ST head that I removed. wired it up in Star and it did nothing. waited for caps to come in the mail and added (3) 25uF caps in delta on the 3 legs and still nothing. Flashed the field and nothing. I wanted to use Star with the center connection as the neutral.  Just for kicks I rewired the motor in delta and hooked up the caps. started it up and the light on the doghouse lit right up. I thought that was cool so without a second thought I throttled her up to 1800 rpm and boom boom out go the lights followed by one of the caps being on fire. shut it down and  then in put the 20uf caps I bought as backups on and tried again. this time just idling It maks about 150 volts and if you give it any rpms the voltage goes way over the scale of the meter.  what is the deal? you supposed to add load and caps a little at a time as you load the motor as a generator? any body got experience with this? pics to follow if anybody is interested.

General Discussion / his vs her diary

Her Diary:

Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn't say much. I asked him what was wrong; He said, 'Nothing.' I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behavior I don't know why he didn't say, 'I love you, too.' When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed.

About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep - I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster.

 His Diary:

Lister won't start, can't figure out why.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Are my flywheels typical?
« on: March 20, 2017, 04:24:56 PM »
No, I never got around to Part III.  I wanted to clean up the flywheels and document balancing them, and then go through the oil pump and make it work like it should.  And maybe do some work on the camshaft.  But by that time, interest on the board seemed to be beginning to lag, and importing the engines was becoming problematic, so I crated up the Beta Test engine and it's still there sitting in a corner of my workshop.  I'm thinking I'd sort of rather have the space than the engine now, since I have another 6/1 all set up and running.  That Beta Test engine was about as good as I could make it.  The last thing I planned to do was to clean up the flywheels and balance them permanently.  But during a move to the new house (and bigger shop!), I was rassling with a flywheel in the bed of my pickup and managed to pull my left biceps off the radius bone and had to have surgery to repair it.  That kept me away from work for a month, and when I got back I had to play catch-up big-time!

I told the Ortho-Doc that when it happened I was surprised, since I still had plenty of strength in that arm, but the insertion just tore off.  I'd have thought our Designer would have made sure that a muscle isn't strong enough to rip itself off the bone, but I guess I just had a bad angle on it.  Ortho-Doc smiled when I said that and then reminded me that I'm not 20 anymore.

not sure if you have been on any antibiotics lately but i guess they are real hard on adults.  just read this article and thought of you, "the damage is cumulative. The more exposures you have to these antibiotics, the more damage is done to your body. Not just for some people, ALL people. A hundred percent of people who take a Flouroquinolone antibiotic, show changes in blood flow to the tendon, cartilage, and ligament in their bodies. Each person has a different breaking point depending on their own unique DNA."  i am going to question it a lot more if a doctor tells me I or my kids need antibiotics in the future.

what if you made the skid like a wheelbarrow, when you picked up on the handles it would lever 1 wheel into the ground and you could wheel it around. then when you stopped and set it down the wheel would come up off the ground. like a wheelbarrow air compressor. put some rubber under the feet so it would not dance around so much.
