Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: an optimist with a 3/1
« on: January 30, 2018, 11:07:22 PM »
Id buy that one if it was closer....
Hot, super muggy, dryest we have ever had. No flies or mozzies, but bloody spider webs everywhere, driving me nuts. Ran my cS for an hour or two yesterday, the old girl hasnt run for months, solar panels doing the job instead.
When this drought breaks, the weather is  gunna change big time.... preparing for it now.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Governor weights out... need more weight ?
« on: January 28, 2018, 12:05:22 PM »
Its easy to overthink this. The weights can be "near enough" and will work well. Even the old weights will work with a lighter spring, heavier weights give better speed regulation as they are more sensitive to speed variation. All force is a logarithmic function, doubling the speed of a vehicle for example takes 4 times the power. ... the nonlinearity has little to do with weight position.

Centrifugal forces are  a nonlinear, function ie, if you double the RPM, you quad triple the force. Therefore the weights will  require heavying , then the spring tension will adequately deal to the rest.
There are calculators on the web to deal with this, type in your existing weights and RPM you have now, then find the weights to give the same force at the new lower  RPMs.
Here is one

And Mike, wishing you  a good new year. Ours started with a drought, now massive flooding as Im doing roof repairs in the pissing rain.... never any roof problem when its fine.
That Lister just may sell. I got $450 for a similar unit, the cost of the hyab to lift it $150, and whatever the freight to southland was, Im guessing another 2/300., so already around the thousand. The spoked flywheels seem more popular with the show people, so maybe that may sway it too.

Glort, that one is a hard case. Massively overgeared, im picking around a 9:1 speedup making the little 3.5 even more hopeless to run the 5kVa alternator. This simply cannot work efficiently in that configuration.  Markons are great alternators.

Ummmm no, not always, Compression only needs to be enough to cause ignition via the heat produced. Any more than this actually reduces power output, as much of the developed power is used to compress the next power stroke. My 3.5hp Lister is very much more capable when running with the COV out, and will struggle with the same fixed load when the COV is wound in. Unlike a petrol engine, the cylinder pressure is largely constant over the power stroke as fuel, and combustion continues as the injector squirts, fuel burns and is available over a longer time. The same high compression benefits are not so pronounced with a diesel. Turbocharging a diesel does produce more power, not  because of any raised compression, but because there is more air to allow a longer burn.

I would doubt a serious New Zealand buyer would  consider that on both price and freight cost, when similar can be had locally for around $NZ500, these genuine Listers are far more prevalent here and come up on our auction sites frequently. The Kiwi  slang for these time wasters is "tyre kicking".
In saying that, bugger all at present, a couple of old petrol engines though, and a 3 cylinder diesel at probably a good price...

Everything else / Re: Blasphemy..... Solar power.

What with yours truly living in the wettest part of the country, like rainfall is measured in feet and meters, Im very happy just with it shining. I care not the direction, azimuth, lattitude....
The air is so clear of pollution the solar rays are as  potent as they are ever likely to get. the UV does well too. A well funded university study recently found that a  generic red plastic bucket will whiten and go brittle in one good summer. A red car will be pink in a just a few years.
Oh the problems we face.......

My Lister has not run for months, the solar panels daily are giving 30 amps for around 5 hours, obviously tapering off morning and evening as the sun moves around. Given the capacity of my battery bank, thats as much as I can store, in fact most is now being wasted. I may change to a 48 volt system next year if this global warming thing takes off, its improved our weather enormously, thanks to all the high emission Lister owners. There is something hugely satisfying making and consuming ones own power.

And of course the ultimate in luxury is the outdoor bathtub, with the fire under it, not something you would find in a typical suburb. Complete with essentials , like magazines, radio, and towel on the ready on a low hanging branch, slab of wood to sit on to prevent the burned bum, and a torch if its happening at night.
You visited the Blackball Hilton I take it? After the Hilton family sued, it had a name change, its now called "Formerly the Blackball Hilton"...... I should mention that in case Paris comes a knocking.
I live around 12ks from Blackball Mike, you would have driven past me..... its been bloody hot down here....

I think  this revolves around the poor sods that live in a built up area as opposed to us lucky ones who live in the sticks. Here we can throw a coil of alkathene on the roof, take 10 minutes with a few Hanson fittings and have a hot shower shortly after.
The "city" dwellers have things like neighburs and councils and need to be socially acceptable, and cant have any exposed  outdoor shower or running around wet and naked. How to explain that when the police are called by that snowflaker next door.
They need to have a private cubical, a tidy solar heater on the roof, and spend far more time and money to satisfy the status quo, of what is considered acceptable behaviour in suburbia.
Good one Mike, thats a method been used down here since alkathene pipe was invented.
We also learned to toot the car horn first  when  visiting unexpectedly.... likely an outside shower, naked sunbathing or toilet may be in use.....
Redneck etiquette.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Oiling Improvements
« on: December 14, 2017, 09:52:41 PM »
Actually, thinking about full flow oil filtering in these older engines, its probably not a good idea. Given the shocking state the oil gets into, a filter would tend to block rather quickly and make things worser real quick. All the engines I have had have survived shitty oil over decades of use with no problems, as many here will attest after working their own
Filters too will shred if there is moisture  in the oil, which, in CS Listers at least is a given, as the oil runs luke warm at best.... never drives out the water with heat.
In saying that, a bypass filter may be a better option, and wont deprive the engine of lubrication if it blocks up, but then it wont be effective either in that case.
Im inclined to think Lister knows best and leave them like they are.

We call these things a caliphont here in NZ, and can highly recommend them. Mine is a "Rinnai" brand, it uses 2 D cells to run the igniter, these last around 5 years.. Despite its cheap appearance, it has served me with no issues at all for 17 years. It has many  safety features,  a 20 minute timer that limits the time it can run.... in case a pipe bursts etc. It will shut down if water pressure drops, and requires a minimum flow rate of 2 liters a minute. This runs my shower, and kitchen tap.. I use around 9 kilos of LPG in a 6 week period, showers every night. One nice feature is the instant hot water when the tap is turned on.... no waiting cause they can be mounted close to the tap.  Also saves money on not needing a shower mixer, the water temperature is adjusted  on the caliphont instead, and will hold its setting very accurately over time. The flow rate can also be adjusted with a second knob.
Rain water is fine for these, after all, rain is distilled water and has no added "goodness" unless you live in a some polluted place.

Interesting Bruce.
I recently read that the predominance of faggotry occurred because and since  of the introduction of plastic, specially cups, food wrap and food storage. The chemicals leach into the food, and mimic hormones in some humans. That may explain why the bum bandit population is  increasing exponentially....
Keep your backs to the wall......
