Engines / Lister SL2 governor?
« on: January 08, 2022, 11:55:54 PM »
My SL2 is belt driving a 5KW ST generator that wont hold cycles at 60. It doesn't fluctuate a lot. My belts could be a little tighter but I believe they are fine. I used some belt dressing and gave it a try, but no change so, as had been suggested, it might be a governor problem. I really cant hear any RPM change as I adjust the speed but it doesn't seem to take much to effect the cycles.  When I run my SL1 with the "Northern" generator the cycles are nice and steady.  Any help would be appreciated.  Steve

Listeroid Engines / SL2 throttle lever
« on: December 27, 2021, 08:52:33 PM »
Greetings,

I have a Lister SL2 driving my 5KW, ST generator. The part that goes down the center of the throttle lever and meshes into the notches in the arc is buggered. I have had a jury rig set up for years and think it's about time to look into replacing the part if I can find one.  Anyone have one? My other option is to take it to a machine shop. Looks like it's only held on with a couple bolts "underneath" and the linkage.  Thanks in advance, Steve

Generators / 5 KW "ST" acting up & down
« on: December 26, 2021, 08:37:48 PM »
Good Day,

It's been a while since I've been around as things have been working fine till now. When a power outage occurs I've been using my small one cylinder Lister and 2.9 KW gen set but today I needed more power and fired up the 2 cylinder Lister with the 5 KW, "ST" generator. I ran it for a couple hours and the voltage and cycles kept going up and down. Voltage from 109 to 125 and cycles 57 to 63. The volts and cycles would hold steady for several minutes then fluctuate again.  This happened the last couple of times I fired up the "ST".  I'm wondering what the "safe" perimeters for volts and cycles are but mainly what the problem might be and how to fix it with my limited knowledge. I've heard of a "automatic voltage regulator", is that what this generator needs?  My cheap little"Northern" 2.9 generator works like a champ. Any help would be appreciated.  Steve

Engines / Lister ST"W" vs SL
« on: May 21, 2017, 06:39:48 PM »

Greetings. I have a Lister SL1 and SL2 running gen sets and my question is, would a ST2 (raw water cooled) Lister be of any value as a "parts engine"?
The ST was in a friends boat and apparently running good as he used to crank start it then one cylinder quit firing and his mechanic thought it was a valve problem. He offered the engine to me after replacing it with a Kubota. So I'm wondering if its worth hauling away. Thoughts? Thanks, Steve

Engines / SL1 starting problem
« on: March 12, 2016, 09:40:24 PM »
Greetings, I have a Lister SL1, belt driving a 2,9 KW generator head. The engine was recently rebuilt when I got it a few years ago and has not seen much use supplying power when the grid goes down. It has always started right up. The fuel line devolved a leak and the engine wouldn't start so after fixing the leak I figured bleeding the injector pump would fix it. Fuel came out but Still no start so I cracked the high pressure line at the injector and had fuel squirting out around the threads when I cranked it over. (wife holding down the rocker) So what now? It looks fairly easy to pull the injector but I thought it a good idea to ask for some input before I go further. Should I try a shot of ether?

General Discussion / Update, Northern 2.9 Gen Head
« on: May 18, 2015, 09:16:32 PM »
Much thanks to all you kind folks for steering me in the right direction.  My stand by system has worked flawlessly when needed. The balance problem was solved with a Square D, 3KVA 240/120v transformer.  My UPSs work fine, no flicker, all is well.  Now for step two. I have allot of homework to do on the subject but I have a question that I need to ask before I get going.  Is there any reason why I couldn't supply my six circuit transfer switch with power from solar panels via an inverter and batteries instead of a gen set, ie a transfer switch between solar and gen set.  If I could do that, the house could run off solar but grid could still power the big 240 loads.  At least by doing that I'd see a little reduction of the power bill and I'd get a little introduction to solar. By the time I get it set up maybe Tesla batteries will be a little cheaper. I'm just wondering if this plan is doable with the infrastructure I have.

Generators / Back to 240V
« on: January 04, 2015, 09:50:41 PM »
I posted this as a reply to an old previous post but since there are not email notifications I thought no one would see it so please excuse me if thats not the case.

Update with a few observations and questions from a electrical rookie. I got my system set up 240/120, both gen sets, the ST5 and Northern 2.9 KW. We had a three day power outage and everything worked fine except I spent allot of time balancing the loads. My UPSs didn't work right and the lights flickered when reefers cycled etc... Not a big deal, I was warned about balancing loads.  I didn't need 240 for my pump so all this hassle could be eliminated if I just go back to 120. (I have a plan for 240 and the deep well pump but we'll forget that for now)  So, no problem rewiring the ST5 head, but since my northern 2.9 head is (3600RPM) 240/120 wouldn't  it be true that if I just plugged into one gen head 120 outlet to feed the system I would only be able to use half the KWs and the gen head would be drastically out of balance? hence my question about being able to rewire it for 120 only or maybe it doesn't matter?  I do have an electrician/friend checking my work but you folks have the generator part down and have been a great help on that end, thank you.

Generators / breaker/fuse protection
« on: November 23, 2014, 04:35:41 PM »
I could use some advice on protecting my emergency power system which is now, finally, up and running. I have a Lister SL2 (8.5 HP) powering a ST5 generator head and a Lister SL1 (4.25HP) powering a Northern 2 pole, 2.9 KW head. both wired 240/120. I'd  run the SL1 when I don't need the well pump or shop tools as its so easy on fuel and the SL2 when I need a little more power. I'd  rather have the breaker/fuse trip under a load that gives me a good margin than come close to over loading either gen set or engine of either set. I've been running the SL1 for years without any such protection but since I've added the SL2 and overhauled the system and have been reading this forum I've learned CBs or breakers would a good idea.  BTW, I got a qualified marine electrician friend to go through my whole system from my main 200 amp panel, six circuit transfer switch and back to the gen sets. What I need to add now is either CBs or breakers that gives a healthy margin for protection in case someone turns on the air compressor or table saw in the shop.

Lister Based Generators / transformer favor
« on: October 17, 2014, 03:31:12 PM »
Would you mind taking a look at this transformer posting for me. It looks like what I need to run my 1/2 HP, 240V, 6 amp well pump from 120v, but I'm a little hesitate to jump. If the spic plate looks like it would work, I'm going for it.   Thank You,  Steve

General Discussion / Northern 2.9 Gen Head
« on: October 15, 2014, 05:57:09 PM »
Does anyone happen to know if the Northern 2.9 generator head can be rewired for 120V only. Theres no mention in the spics and I don't have the gen head here. I'm still contemplating my options.

Lister Based Generators / switching between generators
« on: October 12, 2014, 04:07:42 PM »
I am going to set up my new ST5 generator head and Lister SL2 for 120v/240v. My old SL1 and northern 2.9 generator head is 120v/240.  To use either gen set, would this switch do the job? My 1/2 HP, deep well pump is the only 240v load I have.

Lister Based Generators / SL valave adjusting
« on: September 24, 2014, 06:46:23 PM »
I'll be darned if I can find the valve adjustment clearance for the SL 1 & 2,in the shop manual, might as well check them both.

Lister Based Generators / Fishboat Generator Question
« on: September 23, 2014, 04:00:13 PM »
I've wondered about this for a long time. Allot of fish boats in Alaska run at night with these super bright work lights on, some that shine out head. They say they need to have a load on their generators. Its only annoying out at sea but when you meet one of these guys in a narrow channel its hazardous. I dont need to go into a rant but I was wondering, whats the deal about keeping a load on a generator.

Lister Based Generators / some advise please
« on: September 17, 2014, 05:51:19 PM »
Greetings folks, newbe here. I've had a stand by generator for years and used it for long periods during winter power outages, although now that the roadside trees are being more aggressively trimmed, not as much anymore, but I still need to feel I can be independent of the grid if need be as we live on an island.  I have a Lister SL1 that was completely rebuilt just before I got it, so it’s a strong little engine, hand crank, a real sweetie, my wife can start it, no problem.  I have it running one of those 2.9KW "Northern" heads, infect I have a spare, I know, I should have went with the ST head but, didn't know any better at the time.  I'm happy with the power output as we heat with wood and cook with propane, no need for more power in the house (all 120v) and I can run my 240v deep well pump or a tool in my shop if I have to.  This system has worked for several years but an opportunity to upgrade has come my way, the big brother to my SL1 so without going into details about the SL2, except she starts right up, no smoke, I'm trying to figure how to set up my new system as I have just ordered a ST5 gen head from Tom Osborne. I'm no electrician although I did do all my wiring, but if its not in the "Sunset Home wiring" book I may be in trouble. I keep an eye on the wattage gauge on the transfer switch and see that the load stays somewhat balanced, this is still with the 2.9KW gen head so a question I have is, should I wire the new ST5 head for
120v only? I think it would be most handy to go 240/120 then I could run the house and 240v pump with either Lister.  If I dedicated the new SL2 Lister and ST head to 120v it wouldn't be able to run the pump or shop I'm trying to have a system that will be good for a short power outage or a long power outage.  Both Listers will have the same size (7&3/4) pulley so they can run either head which is another reason to have both heads 120/240.  I don’t need 240v much when the grid goes down but I do need it, mostly to run the pump once a day or a power tool in an emergency.  I hope all this makes sense

  Thanks, Steve
