Listeroid Engines / Re: A squeak has developed
« on: February 21, 2024, 11:36:51 PM »
Well, never mind I guess. I was poking around and decided that the squeak was coming from the loose flywheel. The jib key just wasn't doing its job. Luckily, I had another one and I swapped them out and I seem to be good for right now. Is that an indication of some bad balancing?

So, I've been really happy with how she's running lately, but now (at about 75 hours since oil change) I hear a weird squeak.
Probably something off balance from the new alternator set up, but- what am I looking at here?

Here are a couple of links to adapter fittings. Couple one of these with an NPT coupling or union and then run the rest of the system in NPT. As you can see they are a little expensive. You can probably find them cheaper elsewhere.

https://www.mcmaster.com/products/standard-pipe-fittings/standard-wall-steel-threaded-pipe-nipples-and-pipe-11/pipe-size~1-1-2/thread-type~bspt/

It's the bottom two that say BSPTxNPT.

this is good stuff. I was just searching for such a thing.  yeah, pretty spendy. I'll go to a supply place, now that I understand the specs.   Thanks.

so, if I were talking to someone or renting a tapping kit, what would you all say are the specifications of the exhaust port?
1.5inch "British" tapered?     sorry, this is not an area I know about.

It's about a 4-ft run

So, I have a extension pipe connected into the exhaust Outlet and I noticed that it isn't threaded in very deep and I've got gas escaping at that connection point. I would love to hear advice on how to thread that thing more deeply or what sort of goop to put on the threads to close up the gap.

Listeroid Engines / Flywheel trying to come off??
« on: December 21, 2023, 07:55:21 PM »
So, I had a couple of good 5-hour runs the last couple of days and as I was shutting down I heard a strange squeak and thought I would investigate today thinking maybe something was a little loose in my Foundation or something needed a little more oil. Oil and splash system look great, everything looks Rock Solid and then I suddenly noticed that one of the flywheel Keys was about an inch out. In My Memory these things have been practically rested in place for years. Why would a key suddenly start trying to come out? I have this different Italian alternator on here and maybe there's some difference in the balance? Any suggestions on what I should do other than just pound the key in harder?

Listeroid Engines / Re: injector not squeaking, but squirting
« on: December 19, 2023, 02:45:39 AM »
I did all this prior to your reply and I did get it going again, so thank you. But I do Wonder about my guilt of fiddling with it. What I see when I take that tip not off the injector is that the Chamber of the pinto sits in has two holes that correspond with two prongs on the injector body. And of course you have to make sure those two prongs fit in the two holes when putting it back together. Is that what you mean by making sure it's aligned? Also I did notice that the pinto seemed stuck when I first tried to take it out. I wiped it down as best I could and used a bit of that injector cleaner fluid sold over the counter. And it seemed to move freely with my fingers once I had it cleaned up. Besides having those holes and prongs aligned what other fiddling might I have done to mess things up?

Listeroid Engines / injector not squeaking, but squirting
« on: December 18, 2023, 10:08:41 PM »
So,

had a few good runs - 3 to 4 hours continuous - plus a few short bursts (10 minutes of power tool use) and I did note a strange lack of injector squawk as a shut down the last time 2 weeks ago.  Then today, can't get her to fire up.  I pull the injector to check for carbon (already?) and do a bit of cleaning on the tip, just to be sure.
I put the injector back in upside down to test, and after a few turns, I can see the mist, but it's not doing the 'squawk' that it should.  What's going on? how do I get it to fire up?

Listeroid Engines / is my water (cooling)tank too high?
« on: October 18, 2023, 06:23:20 PM »
was thinking about how the water pressure of having the water up high like I do might be lending itself to possible water leaks.  I haven't seen any this season, but in the past, I've had seepage at the top, beneath the rocker holder block.

Of course, I'd rather not change anything, but would love any thoughts.

top of tank - the into-the-tank point, where the water line is - is about 30 inches 75cm above water outlet of my 6/1.

Listeroid Engines / Re: slow running on start, then slowing down again

UPDATE:

AMAZINGLY STUPID AND LUCKY

so, I'm pretty sure this is what it was, and I can't believe it worked at all before, and that I figured it out.

I was just checking through the whole thing, wondering if my fuel pump was shot or what, and in taking off the injector from the brass fuel line, I noticed the fuel running out continuously, when the engine wasn't on.  Now, I have the fuel tank a bit higher than standard mount, but that's not normal.
so I go further down, taking out the brass fuel line and then the whatsit brass knob above the pump.  As I carry the knob over to my tool bench, I see that there's NO SPRING INSIDE!  I spend 15 minutes on my knees in the dirt looking for where I might have dropped it, no luck.  Could it be I am remembering wrong and there is no spring??  I check to see if I have any replacements in my supply. nope.   then, as I'm standing there scratching my head, I notice - half buried in the gravel around the base of my mount - a bit of spring.   I put it back in, put everything together, and it runs like a charm.

AND, as a bonus, after all the struggles with a gift alternator (cutting off the pulley : https://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=9713.msg111256#msg111256 )  and getting a 4" pulley onto it - it runs a perfect 110ac out.   I'm back in business baby!

thanks again for all the help.

I'm sad to report that there's not enough consistency to answer your questions well.

I'm struggling to get it started at all at the moment (I don't work on this every day, all day. too tiring and disappointing) but since I got my valves properly spaced, I've started it a few times, and it has done the 'run super slow' thing, and not reached operating speed.

No, I've not seen blue smoke.  (I am familiar with it, just not in this instance)

...and by "definitely" I mean "probably"...

So, I should have mentioned - I put a NEW injector on there not that long ago (sometime last year) and I always check the spray, as I have had carbon build up trouble.   I set it up upside down and crank her over, making sure I see and hear the spray.   even in the video, you can hear the injector creak...

and I pulled the fuel filter and the canister was gunky, so I've cleaned that up and am shopping for replacement filter this morning.

But, again, it's been maybe 150-200 hours since I ran veg through this thing (and that never went through the 'regular' filter, it went through a different one)

Could this be some sort of loss of compression from leaky/loose/bad/scratched piston or liner?  that'd be bad news.

ok, more jackass questions from someone who obviously doesn't know what's going on.

After a batch of cleaning up carbon (reset valves, cleaned piston top), putting all back together, attaching a different sort of alternator, I've got a weird thing where it won't actually *get going*.  check out this short video of it firing, but not getting up to speed:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/V7vGNtFD4kE

then, after maybe 5 minutes, and I hold open the fuel line (hold back the gov) it gets going, but then randomly slows down??
here's that video:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/O0mSJEJDqcU

couple other facts:  I haven't run veg oil in this thing in a year or two, the water tank was disconnected, I haven't changed the fuel filter in years, but it's only had good diesel going through it... and that new alternator is an experiment, I don't know, could it be doing some sort of extra drag?

Open to being told obvious things.
