Lister Based Generators / Re: Lister SR2 Help please __ Oil Filter
« on: January 12, 2016, 01:54:12 AM »
I have some Wix filter numbers for your SR-2:

Air    42276
Fuel  33348
Oil    51184 (cartridge element)

Your local auto parts dealer should be able to cross thes numbers to some other brands.
My local NAPA ordered these for me.

I've ordered these for my Sr-2, but I have not verified the fit yet.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Jkson 6/1 rebuild

When I was in my late teens we would build a fire under a 55 gallon drum full of water and add a box of washing soda (Sodium Carbonate,  Na2CO3) from the supermarket.  We then used a tripod of poles to immerse a V8 engine block and brought it to a full rolling boil. The engine blocks came out a beautiful gray cast iron, looking like they were newly made.  A friend uses a 10-amp battery charger to clean rusty woodworking planes by electrolysis; they come out beautiful.

Listeroid Engines / Re: COMPUTER ALERT -- Sitch to Linux
« on: December 06, 2014, 03:41:34 PM »
Hello,

Hackers write for the largest target: Microsoft Windows Users.  Apple get less, but growing attention, Linux far less

I run Windows 7 one one computer, and Ubuntu Linux on another. The more I adhere to using the Linux machine  for online work the longer I can go without disruptions.  Ubuntu is one distribution of Linux that is very close to Windows. It lacks the easy customization of nearly every aspect that some Linux distributions have, but should be a relatively easy transition for most people, and is very easy to keep updated (not the case with some distributions). Being open source, as are most Linux distributions, you can download it free of charge.  There is a large amount of open source  software available.  I use Firefox as my web browser, Thunderbird as my email client (Has a"Calender" meeting/event reminder), GIMP to edit pictures, Inkscape for drawings, and Libre Office for the things I used to use Microsoft Office for.

You can set up a live CD as was mentioned above, or set up dual boot of Linux or Windows on the same computer.

If you have a spare older computer you may be surprised at how well it runs on Linux.  Linux is less resource hungry than Windows and may breathe new life into an older machine.  And if you use Xmarks  you can have all you bookmarks synchronized on all your machines (including Windows if you use Firefox as your Windows web browser).

I hope this makes getting started with Linux a little less daunting.

P.S.  Set up a different password for the Linux "Administrator" and User.  Don't forget them as Linux is much stronger on password security and you will have a more interesting time if you forget.

Engines / Re: SR2 Oil Pressure Cut-Out
« on: November 29, 2014, 04:10:08 PM »
Thank You for your reply, which I read some time ago, and it is evident as I read through other posts that you are a valuable resource here.

I have another questions about the Low Pressure cut out.  I've been reluctant to add an oil pressure gauge to check the actual pressure as I'm not sure how to deal with what are probably British Pipe threads. I'm not sure how to add in the gauge (although I do all my own home plumbing).

Also is the Low Oil Pressure cut out rebuild-able and/or replaceable? Do you stock rebuild parts or a complete unit or another way to handle a low oil pressure event ?

Thanks Again, Alan

Listeroid Engines / Re: Reduce Vibration To Muffler

Hello,
I will also be piping the exhaust of my SR out of my garage.  Even though I am not ready to install in the garage I wanted to reduce stress on the exhaust manifold so I installed a stainless steel flex coupling that is used in modifying car exhaust systems. I bought the coupling from JEGS (www.jegs.com):

A 1-7/8" OD x 1-7/8" OD exhaust tubing adapter with a pipe coupling welded inside one end, and the other end modified with six 1/8" x 1/2" slots and clamped to the intake manifold with the original air cleaner clamp. The Solberg F-19P-125 screws into the top.

Permission is hereby granted to at least chuckle at my second MIG welding project (And never apply black oil-based enamel in a very cold cellar):

Time and temperature finally coincided today and I had a chance to start cleaning my SR2 genset.

I took off the camshaft exrtension guard and scraped out about a half pound of dirt. Under there was some green paint.

Here is how it looks next to some of the prints of Lab, and two versions of sRGB Mid-Brunswick Green:

Do any of these resemble the original Lister color?

Is the red I am seeing the green in some areas the primer that Lister used?

Engines / SR2 Oil Pressure Cut-Out Decal Wording
« on: May 04, 2014, 01:46:20 AM »
Hello,

I've started scraping/de-greasing/cleaning my SR2.  There is a decal on the camshaft guard that looks like this"

Can you supply the missing words?

I started the SR2 for the first time today.  I did not have to pull out the plunger and set the pointed tab on the rim of the cylinder (it was already there).  I stopped the engine and re-started and the same was true.
From what I can make out of the existing wording it looks like the plunger should be set on the rim to start, then building oil pressure pushes it out enough that the pointed tab springs away from the cylinder and if oil pressure falls the plunger is then free to retract and stop the engine. Or, I could have it all wrong.

Thanks for your Assistance!

Thanks very much for the information. I just spent some time with Photoshop and Qimage both cropping out the green in the image and by using the Lab color settings and by using the RGB values.  I printed four images using Epson "Premium Photo Paper Glossy" on my Epson 3800 color printer.  I have two that are very close to each other, one that is a much bluer green, and one a very black green. Looking more closely at my engine, it appears that the person I purchased it from painted over a red using an unidentified green paint (Rustoleum  "Dark Hunter Green" ?), so I have nothing at all to judge color by.  It isn't of great consequence to me for this is to be a working engine, not a traveling exhibit, but I thought I might as well match up something that others could use.  If both of us had on each end of the electronic pipeline a graphics monitor, X-rite Color Munki instrument, scanner, and about $500.00 in software (I may be out of date on the cost now.) we could make this work electronically.

Thanks again for the information, I will keep a copy in the hope that I get access to more equipment in the future.

Off to the hardware store for some return line fuel tubing.  I'm getting closer to first start up. I'd really like to get the SR2 warmed up so I can change out the old black oil!

I'm in central Massachusetts.

I don't have access to Imron  or anything exotic, just single-part acrylics, and oils (rapidly disappearing due to VOC regulations).

If anyone is close enough I could scan a part that has a flat surface, however I bet the paint has aged (yellowed & darkened) considerably since it was put on in Dursley.

I understand that this color is still available across the pond, however shipping puts that out of reach, at least for me. Perhaps a Brit will mail me a sample (hint, hint!).

Everything else / Mid Brusnwick Green Paint Match Offer
« on: April 24, 2014, 12:10:30 PM »
Hello,

I purchased a 1972 Lister SR2 this winter and would like to give it a repaint when the weather warms up a bit. I am the manager of a paint department in a True Value Hardware store. If someone would send me a good sample of "Mid Brunswick Green", BS381C shade 226, I would color match it into an oil based enamel and publish the formula here. The initial match would be done with an X-Rite iVue instrument and either True Value or Benjamin Moore software, and then hand matched (30 yrs. of doing this) if necessary.

To prepare a sample put a coat of paint on white computer paper (common 20 pound stock) at least 2 inches  square. Follow with a second coat when the first is dry.
When the second coat is dry hold the sample against a fluorescent light bulb (tube) and look for light transmission through the paint film.  If there is ANY light from pinholes, brush streaks, of other defects in the film I will not be able to use the sample.

Since the original paint is an enamel the sample will have to dry for a couple of weeks before being mailed. Even then it would be best to put a layer of waxed paper against the paint film to prevent my receiving a paper-paint-paper laminate after passage of the envelope through the rollers of our post office machines.

If you send me a personal message I will send my mailing address. Let's see if this works!

Engines / SR-2 Question about replacement air filter
« on: February 22, 2014, 05:56:57 PM »
Hello,

The standard oil bath air filter on my newly acquired Lister SR-2 (1800 RPM) was damaged when I received the genset. I would rather not go back to an oil bath air cleaner. I did some measuring today, and found the OD of the intake manifold air cleaner mounting point to be about 1.885" . I can fabricate a mounting adapter from a 1-7/8" ID x 1-1/2" OD exhaust tubing adapter and a 1-1/4" pipe coupling, yeilding a 1-1/4" FMP mounting point. I'm considering a Solberg inlet filter due to their reputed quieting effect. Would this filter be suitable as far as CFM, or do I need another?

Solberg F-19P-125 Inlet Filter, 1-1/4" MPT Outlet, 6-5/8" Height, 6" Diameter, 70 SCFM

Thanks for Your Assistance
