Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / Powerline 12/2
« on: June 13, 2020, 08:01:33 PM »
Hello folks,
I may have to move and was wondering if there is any interest in a 12/2 Powerline with 8Kw gen. head. If so, reply and we can talk. I'm on Cape Cod MA.
Thanks

I'll add a link to the photo's of how I installed my thermostat.

Hope this clarifies how I solved this upgrade. There are of course many others ways that will also work.

Outstanding description Butch. I did measure the pistons and they were right on. I will check for big end back and forth on the crank and if it looks like there's no side to side play from top of travel to bottom, I will leave shimming of the jugs right were it is.
Wow, it ain't easy. If it were, anybody could do it. ;)  Steve

Hello There 32 coupe,
I have a 12/2. I noticed you mentioned "camshaft center carrier", did you mean crankshaft center carrier? Camshaft won't affect shims or cylinder aligning. I was wondering if the less than .002" difference was acceptable for piston to head claerance measurement. The center bearing carrier for crankshaft was nice, no play at all. The camshaft center carrier is also fine. Thanks, Steve

The paper shims worked well. Difference is now less than .002. I could live with that, but what do you fellas think?.
As a side note, how much fun is putting those crankshaft counterweights in? I have large hands and those two outer weights just don't allow the use of two hands. Oh well, it's done. I suppose everything gets easier the more times you do it. Cheers lads, Steve

That's good news. I already installed them and didn't feel like taking them out again. So if they turn in position with a pipe wrench, I'm golden. Thanks Lads. Steve.

Hi guys,  These holes are in the tappet guides, not the valve guides.  The holes are far enough down on the guide to be under the deck in the crank case when installed. The holes are drilled at an angle perpendicular to the tappet and angled downward towards the outer circumference. That's why I'm not sure if it makes any difference in the way they face. Hope you can picture what I'm talking about.

Excellent description ronmar, I did use two pcs of solder on the piston out to the edges over the wrist pin. There was a small difference  (3 or 4 thou.) that I was going to ignore, but it sounds quite easy to slip a half shim in there. I'll be on that tomorrow.
 Thanks,  Steve

BruceM,
I should have asked before I installed and removed and installed again 4 times to get it right.  Next time will be a breeze. Great idea and thanks. Steve

Hi there Fairmountvewe
On my 12/2 I machined a slight indent in the water outlet flange to match diameter of the thermostat, and just deep enough to hold it from moving. Drilled the small bypass hole in the thermostat as mention by the other guys, making sure it was at the top when installed, and the bulb of thermostat was facing engine, and it works just fine. KISS rule applied here. G'luck, Steve

Listeroid Engines / Cylinder Shims
« on: February 22, 2014, 11:28:56 PM »
The shims or gaskets that lay on the deck under the cylinders would not add up to the required distance needed for the squish (.045 to .050) to be equal on both cylinders. The ones Willem sent were .019, .021, or .023.  I was under the specification with one shim and over with two shims. I made one out of brown kraft paper added to one supplied shim  and the squish is now exactly perfect. Does anyone see a problem with using paper to get the correct height on the cylinders? Thanks, Steve

Update, Sorry I should have mentioned in the last thread that I have George's CD and it has a great section on tappets and guides. No mention of the small holes in the guides though. Maybe no need to worry about it? Mostly curiosity on my part. As an after thought, after installing the cyl. and pistons, I realized I put the pistons in the opposite cylinders as they were in. Was going to ask about that but it's so easy to swap I'm going out to do that right now. I know :-\, how does one do that even though i have them marked? Well I gave the culprit a swift kick. He said it won't happen again. Thanks guys, Steve

Listeroid Engines / Tappet guides

Hi Folks
I noticed the small angled holes drilled in the sides of the tappet guides (similar to a previous thread from selmawp on valve guides) and wondered if they should face any particular way or it doesn't matter. These holes do not show in the manual. They are for lube oil I think, but would be too small for splashed oil to go up the slanted holes. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks, Steve.
