I'm looking at the photo, but can't figure how it's attached to the inlet elbow.
Is there a boss on the other side?

Thanks for the inside dope on Lister starting secrets, Ronmar.
These subtle undocumented tricks are great for a newcomer to learn about.

I'll eventually get some powered starting on my setup (genset), but would like to be confident I can start it manually if needed.
I do have the heavier type flywheels, so that might help too.

Thanks Carl, I get it now.

Although I have a 6/1, I have never started it yet. I'm still organising the fuel & cooling arrangements.
But, I'm confused about the reported difficulty in getting it over the compression stroke during starting.
The manual mentions an exhaust valve lifter. That should prevent any compression from being created, during the starting phase when all effort is put into getting the crankshaft to spin up.
Only when enough kinetic energy has been created in the quickly rotating flywheels, should the valve lifter be disengaged, compression then taking place for a hopeful start.
Is this right?

Listeroid Engines / Re: Flywheel balancing question
« on: November 06, 2013, 02:41:01 AM »
The notion of sweet spot is sort of correct, but the other way around.
There's a "sore spot" in any reciprocating mass, when the frequency of vibration matches the natural resonant frequency of the mass, creating the worst vibes for it.
Avoid that freqency (and multiples of it) to lessen vibration.
Easy enough to do on a single speed engine. Bolt it to something heavy, if it vibrates excessively. That will change its inherent resonant frequency.
A portable engine isn't so easy to deal with.
I'm guessing the balance factor is 50% ?

Do we know what is the balance factor that Lister recommended?
I think, if an engine's bolted firmly to a large block of concrete, this must help lessen vibrations.

Thanks for the info fellas.
Re: a small remote tank - where does one find such a thing?
Does it need to have a one-way valve, to prevent leakage?
Would it be practical to buy a small complete compressor, dedicated for starting purposes? I'm thinking its tank could hold compressed air, but would it do so indefinitely?
Also, to really torment people - how does one know what size air motor to use?

That looks a neat setup.
I don't know much about compressed air systems, but not needing a battery has appeal.
Is air starting a practical solution, if no working compressor is available at the time?
If there's a power blackout so the compressor motor won't work, will an air tank be adequate to store enough compressed air for a few starts?
To be always available, it'd have to be dedicated for engine starting, so a remote tank fed from the compressor might work?
Leakage a problem?
