Engines / Rust removal by electrolysis
« on: January 26, 2014, 12:17:47 AM »

Searching for something else, ran across this method.
 http://www.antique-engines.com/electrol.asp
There is detailed information here, new to me, but maybe common knowledge (?)
I've not tried it, and am not likely to do so for a while as I suddenly have a priority project that goes to the head of the list.
Has anyone here used this method before? Results?
Cheers,
Hugh

Engines / injector pump stuck
« on: January 15, 2014, 09:32:50 PM »
Looking for a good idea here;
I recently acquired a Bosch pump that was used on a 6/1 running WVO. The pump has low hours, so I'm hoping it has little internal wear.
Here's the problem......the WVO has hardened up, the rack is stuck, and the piston too. Can't get it apart, as nothing moves. Does not appear to be corrosion, just gooped. Brute force is not the answer here, so.....
Anyone know of a solvent that will free this up, so I can disassemble it? I have read that biodiesel will dissolve most anything, but I have no source for any.
Help appreciated.
Cheers,
Hugh

Original Lister Cs Engines / Valve seat replacement
« on: December 22, 2013, 11:04:56 PM »
Tearing down the Start-0 6/1  I got recently. The exhaust valve sunk fairly deeply into the seat. Intake not so. Would like to install new valves, guides and seats. Valves and guides seem easy to come by.
Anyone know of a source for valve seats?
Anyone have some input on how to do this properly?

BTW
On another forum I read that Detroit Diesel series 92 valve seats are a direct replacement. I wonder if anybody has tried that one? should be very cheap and easy (hahaha!!!!)
Seriously......would like to know more about seat and guide replacement.

Cheers,
Hugh

General Discussion / Listers on the Nile
« on: November 25, 2013, 10:19:44 PM »
Had a phone conversation with a friend in U.K. this morning. John had just returned from a business trip in Sudan.

After the conclusion of the business, his hosts took him on a river boat trip near the confluence of the Blue and White Nile Rivers. John reports that there is very little tourism in Sudan, and along the river he saw mostly small farming plots irrigated with river water.  The boat trip took place in early evening and the otherwise quiet was punctuated every so often by the thumping of old Lister 6/1s (or maybe Listeroids) as they pumped river water into the fields.
Since we were constrained on phone time and talked of many other things, I didn't ask about photos.......I will ask and will post of they are available.
I would bet there are many of these engines still in service at remote locations around the world.
Cheers,
Hugh

Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / Lister LD and SL instruction manual
« on: November 22, 2013, 11:11:40 PM »
Good afternoon all:
A few days ago an old timer showed up here. He had heard that I had a couple of Lister gen sets. While clearing the shelves in his workshop he came across an instruction manual and a few parts for Lister LD and SL engines and marine gearboxes.
Quote from Gordy, "Before we had Hydro (commercial electricity here), we had Listers"
My engines are a 6/1 and SR2, so I have no use of either the manual or the copper cylinder  gaskets/shims.
Will be happy to mail the manual to whomever has need of it. All you have to do is PM me and pay postage.
First come........
Cheers,
Hugh

Original Lister Cs Engines / International shipping glitch
« on: November 13, 2013, 12:05:40 AM »
Good afternoon everyone;

Just had an unpleasant surprise earlier today. I have a SOM in transit from Europe.
It has just arrived at a POE in eastern Canada.
Customs selected the container of mixed cargo for an inspection.......lucky me, and everyone else with cargo in that container!
Seems my SOM was "dirty". Two choices, return to sender and pay return freight as well as original freight quote OR have the engine cleaned at great expense. Cost of cleaning and cost of return freight are nearly same. Looks as though I will have to cough up a large additional fee either way.
The shipping seemed to be taking longer than original quote. In jest, I asked the shipping company if perhaps it was waylaid by pirates and being held for ransom.............Seems I was closer to the mark than I originally thought!
Be advised then, not only must your shipping be done on an  internationally approved pallet, the item shipped must meet a cleanliness specification as well.

In addition to the increased cost for cleaning, my good wife suggested she might get a few pairs of new shoes for her agreement.

Cheers,
Hugh

Generators / Stamford D8C transformer controlled generator
« on: August 02, 2013, 11:46:02 PM »
Good afternoon Gentlemen:
Re the generator I was recently given; I seem to be unable to find any information regarding this model. Contacted Cummins, they have nothing.
Would anyone have any information about the operation of this type, and can anyone point me to a manual? This particular head was belt driven by an ST2.
It was a replacement for the original, I am sure, as the whole gen set was Mfg'd by BC Equipment Co. Ltd in Vancouver. Engine is dated 1968, and gen set data plate indicates 7KW. this gene head is dated 11/80 and is 9,4KW
Any information appreciated.
Cheers,
Hugh

Lister Based Generators / Stamford Newage generator ID
« on: July 26, 2013, 01:52:27 AM »
The Lister SR2 with a Stamford Newage generator that I was given is now back at my shop. Don't know much about gen heads, so hoping for some input.
The generator model is F9348 date of manufacture is 11/80. I rescued this unit from  a small island where it had once provided power for a fishermans house and net loft. There is no "doghouse" on the generator, the 4 wires that come out of the top of the gen housing went directly into the distribution wiring. I have just wiped the grime off so far, and have not opened it up..........am wondering how voltage is controlled in this unit, as there is no sign of ever having a voltage regulator installed on it. Perhaps an internal unit??
It is a single phase unit 240/120 volts at 38/78 amps according to the data plate. Kw rating is not legible, is this a 10Kw unit?
The original data plate on the gen set (located on the SR2's cooling shroud) gives a generator number as 40151/9 with a rating of 7Kw, The Gen set was manufactured by BC Equipment Co. Ltd. Vancouver, Canada. Engine date of manufacture is 1968, so I doubt the Stamford was original.
Any info would be helpful.
Cheers,
Hugh

Engines / SR2 With Stamford
« on: July 23, 2013, 04:27:49 AM »

Today was a big day here. I was GIVEN (Thank you Coulter Island) an SR2 with a belted on Stamford 7Kw generator. The engine was said to be running and the generator genning three years ago when it fell into disuse. The engine turns over and has compression, the generator spins freely. What`s the catch? It is on a small island, and they want it gone yesterday. I only have a 16ft rowing skiff, and the generator shed is back in the woods which have grown up for years since the machine was originally installed there. I have to pull it apart to get it out of there and carry it in my boat.
Looks as if the machine leaked oil profusely, or at least for a long time, as it is pretty grimy, but it is all there and not corroded. Have it pulled the intake, exhaust, heads and barrels so far. I was not able to remove the pistons, rods, flywheel and cooling shroud today, ran out of time.
Hand crank has an arrow indicating anticlockwise rotation, but the pawl is set up for clockwise rotation(???)

Engine serial number is 1060SR2-18 Can anyone help with date of manufacture?

Since I've got to tear it down to move it, Looks as if I might as well do at least a partial rebuild on reassembly.
Gary, Can you help with manuals and parts?

Thanks to all of you who post here. Without this site, I probably would not attempt the project.

Cheers Hugh

Original Lister Cs Engines / Swapping flywheels on 6/1SOM
« on: May 29, 2013, 11:23:48 PM »
Hello everyone,
May I seek your expertise on a flywheel question?     6/1 SOM:    the grooved flywheel is normally mounted on the side a way from the cranking side. If using a serpentine belt, one cannot (I assume) use it on the grooved flywheel. In the interest of safety, can the smooth flywheel and the grooved flywheel be swapped side for side? Are there balance problems involved? Any other issues that might arise?
Thank you all for your input.
Cheers,
Hugh

Red Stone Engines / Anyone using Redstone now?
« on: May 16, 2013, 05:55:07 PM »
Seems there have been no posts re the Redstone for quite a while. I understand there were only about 30 of these imported into North America. Is anyone running one now? I have a friend who bought one, set it up for back-up power, hardly ever used though. Curious about how they have worked out?

Hugh

General Discussion / 50Hz refrigerator running on 60Hz
« on: February 10, 2013, 11:49:07 PM »

European spec fridges are very much more energy efficient than those available to us in North America.
Example, an American made Sunfrost is rated at 150KWH annually, by far the most efficient unit commercially  available, and costs about $3000.
The most efficient brand names available here in N.A. use upwards of 300KWH annually.
A Bosch fridge of comparable size is rated at 130KWH annually and is available for about 650 Euros (about $900) in Germany.

Difference in power consumption makes a big diff for those of us who are off-grid.

Don't get me started on why we are stuck with such power hogs when much more efficient units are available elsewhere.

Does anyone have an educated opinion re running a European spec fridge 220V 50Hz on 240V 60Hz.

Thanks for your input.

Cheers,
Huhg

General Discussion / New member on the Wet Coast
« on: February 10, 2013, 07:47:19 PM »
Good morning Gentlemen:
Finally, after a few years of lurking, signed up. First thing to say is a very grateful Thank You to all those of you who have contributed so much information and experience over the years. What a goldmine of experience and knowledge.
A couple of years ago, we bought a JKson from John Ferguson, along with a PMG. We were building a house for ourselves at the time, so it sat in the storage shed until last autumn. Originally, the idea was to provide back-up power for the all too frequent outages we have out here on the islands (Canadian West Coast)
Last year, our power provider, B.C. Hydro decided we would all have a "SmartMeter" We did not agree, so went off grid. Now the 6/1 is used to recharge our battery bank. Still building the mounts for solar panels, won't be getting much sun anyway for the next few months........seems like it has been foggy forever this winter.
We have been living out here doing whatever is necessary for nearly 30 years, before that made my living as an aircraft mech, commercial airlines. Here, had a small plumbing business, now well into geezerhood. My very wonderful wife has a very green thumb, grows most of our food, we keep bees, it's a labour intensive, but very satisfying life out here.
Thank you all again for all the help and encouragement you all have unknowingly provided in this latest adventure. I will contribute as I am able.
With kind regards
Hugh Conroy
