Listeroid Engines / KOEL 8/1 Project
« on: July 13, 2012, 04:10:35 AM »
Making some Progress on the Kirloskar 8/1 with ST5 project.

I laid out and tacked together the subframe. It's from 2" x 3" thick wall. Dimensions are 20" x 60". I also cut out 2 20" x 20" plates from 3/16" material for bases.
Here's a pic of the frame:

Here is pic of the plate laying on the frame:

Here is a pic with the ST5 genny sitting on the frame for some measurements:

I also got the lister off of the crates and packing. I started her for a second just sitting on the shop floor. It scooted a little but would pretty much just sit there and pop...pop...pop away.

It looks as though for belt clearance, unless I build up a base to bolt to, I am going to have to offset the engine and genny head to one side of the frame. Allowing the flywheel and generator pully to hang over the side. Anyone have any thoughts on this or anything you see in the pics?

One last pic of her on the floor with no packing (this pic also shows my air filter mod):

My electric bill says I used 3783kWh's last month.
So that is 126kWh per day.
Or 5.25kW per day.

Did I do that correctly?

That is in our all electric farm home, with shops (welders etc) included and a travel trailer plugged in the harvest crew was using.

I took issue with the DIY'er and quality of work comment as well. My work most oftens exceeds the manufacturers and that is on $150k combines, tractors; my own vehicles, construction, etc.
Quality and pride in work just doesn't exist in America anymore at the commercial level.

A bonded 3v belt will handle 300 hp.  In this application that belt will likely outlast me.

I agree on being able to run very low belt tension as well which means MUCH less friction.

Have any of you used TB Woods?

I contacted them today and they have several options. I had a local vendor in my small rural town! They had crown pulley (basically another flywheel with a crowned smooth surface), a serpentine with J-grooves cut in it (industry uses j-grooves, auto uses k-grooves) or 3 v grooves.  They sell the matching sk and sd bushings as needed and will custom cut the keyway to match for $10 more. They also stock a large quantiy of belts.

I talked to Eric in the engineering department. He had a program on his computer and he plugged my 23.5" flywheel in turning at 850 rpm's. He then asked what rpm I wanted to turn the gen at. I responded 1800.  He asked what horsepower and load. I said 8 horse flywheel and 5kW head with a 3kW average load. He comes back and says you need and 11" 3v pulley. I said what about serpentine. He said with the heavier start loads of a well pump the v's can better compensate for the load and will deliver a smoother more constant rpm.

I asked what about the rob of horsepower using the v's over serpentine. He responded there was a negligible difference of less than 1%. All this with his computer program, a calculator, and a pencil.

Thoughts?

Tom and Bandmiller2, you both make excellent points. I was just coming from the KISS principle angle. Less parts=better. But you have talked me out of it.

Having a hard time finding a pulley for the gen. Tom at Georgia Generator has been WAY busy with all the storms in the East and it seems his machinist is MIA or something......

Lister Based Generators / Direct Drive?

Hey All,

I've seen multiple discussions here about direct drive starters, rubber wheels, hockey pucks, etc.

What about direct driving the gen head itself with an 11" friction pulley? One could build the head on a slide mechanism and have a lever (clutch) they use to push the head into the flywheel when generating.

Thoughts?
Has this already been hashed and I missed it?

Hey All,

Took the family on a week vacation so I've been out of pocket and NOT working on the 8/1. But I HAVE been thinking a lot while driving. I've come up with a few scenarios I may run by you all either within this thread or start another. Should I keep it all here? Or start another?

Gonna attempt to post a pic or two so here goes:

Did an air filter mod tonight after we got home.  I stopped at a NAPA while the fam was doing something else on vacation and picked up these pieces:
A Filter

A piece of all thread, a coupler nut, and a new wing nut.

Ground out the old oil bath piece and sanded and painted.

I'll get you a finished pic tomorrow.

All for now,

fuelfarmer, Gyro's are soooo neat! I've been watching them for years. The technology and ammenities are becoming way more advanced. I love the safety of the concept.

Did you like yours?
Anything you didn't like?

Thanks for the welcomes Tom, bandmiller2, windvision, 38ac, dieselgman, and rleonard!

rleonard, interesting on the number of pilots.  I have always thought unless they came out of Air Force most private pilots are the mechanical DIY type. You's have to be really. Unless you were independently wealthy and had your own private mechanic you trusted. Even then.....

dieselgman, bolts were tight, but to a quickly decomposing old Indian case bottom, and then that just setting on that pallet.

38ac, I checked some of the bolts, but not all of them. I'll go back.

Question for everyone:
What is the best way to pick one of these up without bending, springing or hurting anything?

Thanks,
Brian

Well it was bolted to the remainder of an indian crate bottom, and then just setting on a pallet (I thought the bolts went all the way through but didn't look  ::) ).  Gary had pre-run this motor with no issues, so I took a look see in the case. I flushed the case with diesel, added some Lucas and then proper amount of oil.I was able to squirt the Lucas up on the mains and idle gears and lobes.  I primed the fuel system, and then cranked her. No go. a little smoke, but no go.

So I read on here where several had rolled the fly wheels until hearing the injector creak, and back a partal turn, and then forward again. I did this 5 times.  Cranked up a good head of steam I was determined) and released the decompression lever, and BANG...Huff...Hufff...BaBANG-BANG....hop..huff...hufff.hufff....BANG....hop..hop...Huff....BANG...hop..huff....BaBANG.  At this point my eyes were tearing from the smoke, but through the tears I noticed the top crate bottom was walking off the pallet at an alarming rate.  My 8 year old son had run for cover.  So I killed the fuel and began tryin to walk her back on the crate while those flywheels coasted. Yeah, Right!  At this point I realized this motor is going to tip off the crate. I had a mental image of those flywheels contacting the shop floor and gaining traction. I briefly thought I'd better run. But no, I stood my ground and put a shoulder into to it (I'm 6'6 and 300lbs) and kept it partially on that pallet until all stopped.

My son fetched me a shim to prop the part of the motor off the pallet and we slipped that under her and went and got the cherry picker to slide her back on the crate.

I do think she was smoothing out, but the pallet and old crate bottom were not in good shape and desintegrated under that motor.  Sitting directly on the shop floor would have been WAY better. The pallet gave her quite a bit of spring, and she was running quite rough. Gary had a tag on her dated September 9, 2011 when he ran her up. So that fuel in the line and filter was old. I probably had too much fuel in the cylinder as well.

Fabbing a steel frame right now. It'll be 2"x3" tubing welded up with miters at the corners. Gonna fill the frame with sand, then weld shut. I'm using 1/4" plate to mount the motor and ST5 to then to the frame. Do I have enough mass? I'll eventually attach the frame to a slab floor but want to run it some while fabbing cooling, etc.

Hey All,

Lurker here for many, many months. I finally made my first purchase from Gary at DES. A KOEL 8/1. I picked it up Friday and have it uncrated and test ran on the pallet for a few seconds (that was scary!).

Also picked up an ST5 Head and plan to generate to pump some water and furnish some power to out buildings. I'm really just getting my feet wet with this one, and plan to generate for our home with something bigger (18/1, 16/2). I absolutely love the simplicity and diverse fuel sources of these slow turning diesels. And the sound of course!

I'm a farmer in NW Oklahoma. I work in banking as a day job to support the farming "hobby". I'm a pilot, motorcycle owner, and love operating and mechanic-ing on anything with an engine!

My primary interest in these engines is for power generation. As a fierce Libertarian, and a huge supporter of farm life and rural America, electricty is the only area where I am dependent on anyone. It's time to fix that. I'm not a "prepper" per say, but we could go a while without any outside assistance if needed.

There you have it. That's me - OKFarmer
