Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Dublin NH old engine show
« on: September 09, 2013, 01:55:32 AM »
Mark I don't know how the rods were set up,a friend of mine in the service came from their and just said rods were used to pump the wells.Mayby someone on this forum is from the oilfields and can explain it to us. Frank C.

Glort, they used a lot of oilfield engines in the hills of pennsylvania and liked them loud so they could tell they were still running out in the woods. They had what was called rod houses with long steel rods extending out to pump oil from the many small wells.Prehaps all the listers are bolted down working instead of doing the show circuit.I agree about having engines gainfully employed at shows,my favorite was a one banger hooked to an antique rope twisting machine or shingle mill. Engines / Re: Is Anti-Freeze Okay?
« on: September 04, 2013, 01:49:47 AM »
Good tip from Bruce on drilling a couple of small holes in a thermostat.I've found it usefull to burp the system when filling. Its good form when installing a thermostat to place the "pill" end of the stat close to the engine and its heat so it will open in a timely manner. You don't want  permanent antifreeze any richer than 50/50 that's good to 35 below  F. Gary what do they use in Alaska.?? Frank C.

General Discussion / Re: Oils (engine lubricating)
« on: August 24, 2013, 02:02:23 AM »
Air cooled small engines tend to run hot especially in the head.Synthetic oils shine in ether hot or cold operations.I like to mix a small amount of the 100/1 synthetic 2 cycle oil in my small engine gas.Diesel engine oil like 15-40 is fine to use in small engines and farm tractors, its too thick for most modern autos. Engines / Re: Cold Starting Aids/Enhancers/Adjuvants
« on: August 20, 2013, 01:44:47 AM »
The old WD-40 used to be a good starting aid but they messed it up and its now nonflamible.I use one of those cheap radiant propane heaters you mount on a 20 pounder.Aim it at  the head for a few minutes and off she goes. Frank C.

Could these engines be set up and imported as air compressors and later be converted to engines with "acme" injection kit.?? Frank C.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Yes, my twin ran backwards today! What fun
« on: August 11, 2013, 02:24:10 AM »
I would say your roid goes boath ways.I used to get panicked calls from the firefighters when a Detroit diesel was running backwards.I didn't think they would run long that way but if you have  compression and injection somethings going to happen. Many of the old marine diesels such as the Enterprise were direct coupled to the props and had to be shut down and the camshaft shifted slightly and restarted to back up.

Lister Based Generators / Re: Dependable

Thob, can't use that ploy anymore already have a half dozen generators, even the back ups have a back up. Frank C.

Lister Based Generators / Dependable
« on: July 08, 2013, 01:21:13 AM »
I wish everything in this life was as dependable as an old lister. First power outage,ST-1 started first compression lights refrigeration and fans.No flicker everything including mommy seemed happy. Frank C.

38ac,I'd check into what the hydronic heating guys are using, that stuff is available reasonable and bulletproof. Frank C.

I would not pound the flywheel in,but instead drill and tap the key and use a slide hammer to pull the key.Usally not good form to run a diesel too slow look up the range and stay close to that do your speed changes with belts and sheves. Frank C.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Help with Balancing 6/1
« on: April 24, 2013, 12:35:45 PM »
Although I have only an original Lister that runs quite smooth[for a one cylinder diesel] I find this balancing very interesting.I'am on the outside looking in but it seems to be a crap shoot and trial and error is the only solution. Were I to be faced with this I would try a moveable clamp on weight with a cavity to add lead shot.Glort, remember "its but a whale and we're whaling men"keep at it mate.

Generators / Mouse guards
« on: April 18, 2013, 12:57:37 AM »
Completed installing mouse guards today on my st-10generator ,used that square hardwear cloth.Lister ST-1  started first compression I cranked it over.Plugged in a 1500 watt heater and couldn't tell any change of pitch in the engine, its refreshing to have an engine that lives up to its rateing, may have to get more heaters to plug in. Frank C.
