Lister Based Generators / Updated genny installation
« on: October 13, 2012, 12:42:28 PM »
I was going to run a seperate set of wires from my gen.to chosen appliances, but listened to you guys and decided to take the high road.New breaker panel, with lockout for genny, professionally installed. Frank C.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Gasoline in diesel fuel
« on: September 28, 2012, 02:02:41 AM »
Have any of you ever added a small amount of gasoline to diesel fuel to aid winter starts.Used to drive a VW rabbit diesel and would mix a gallon or so of gas to a full tank to put some "teeth" in the fuel. Frank C.

Lister Based Generators / Thump,thump,thump
« on: September 14, 2012, 12:46:16 PM »
You guys weren't kidding, poured an 8'x12' slab with pedistal for my ST-1 Lister.Letting the green concrete cure but had to try it running.Right now its on a heavy frame bolted solid to the cement, you can feel it on the ground.I left enough bolt legnth to experiment with various dampening methods.Lister house almost completed, underground cable run to house.Building will be well insulated to reduce noise. Original Lister Cs Engines / Lister vs. Witte diesels
« on: September 11, 2012, 12:24:37 PM »
Do you guys consider the Witte diesel to be the full equal of a Lister diesel in reliability and longevity.I looked at two Wittes yesterday and was impressed with their build.Years ago the owner called the factory, they told him the design life is 150 years. Are Wittes generators considered good by todays standards.?? Thanks Frank C.

Lister Based Generators / Request advice
« on: July 21, 2012, 09:35:20 PM »
Guys I'd like your input on a couple of matters. As most know I have an air cooled ST-1 Lister direct coupled to a ST-10 gen head, that will be used as a standby unit,no real close neighbors.I am building a sound deadening shed with a poured concrete pedistal for the engine should the heavy welded base be bolted directly to the concrete or should I have some rubber between the base and the concrete.??Second whats the best practical exhaust system,I'am running it outside with flex pipe wrapped with fiberglass tape, common muffler or something in the ground.?? Thank You Frank C.

Generators / Engine HP
« on: July 20, 2012, 01:45:25 PM »
Question for you techie types, reading post from our Aussie brother his ST-1 Lister is running at 1500 rpm's basically half speed half hp when he has a large load and the governor opens up will he pull more than 6hp from that engine or is it locked into that hp due to its speed.?? Thanks Frank C.

Lister Based Generators / Metal lathe
« on: July 12, 2012, 12:05:41 PM »
How many of you guys have a metal lathe and even better a milling machine too.??I'd be lost without mine and old 14"x36" Hendy and Cincinati toolmaster vert. mill. This stuff is around cheap and it opens new worlds especially with shafts and pulleys[sheves]. Frank C.

Generators / Couplings
« on: June 30, 2012, 12:25:38 PM »
As of now I have my ST-1 Lister belted to A ST-10 gen. head with two "B" series belts.I went to belts because there was a good two groove sheve on the engine and I thought I'd have to adjust the speed via sheve size. The lister speed was turned down to 1800 and has the right gov. spring per build code.I'am getting some vibration, problem I don't know how much is normal.Boath sheves run true.I know now I can direct couple to the gen. and I'am partial to Lovejoy  S-flex couplings [two flanges and toothed rubber between] just wondering if it would improve enough to warrent the expense. Is direct coupling much better than "V" belts.??Are the chinese st heads reasonably ballanced from the factory.?? Thanks Frank C.

Lister Based Generators / Too many generators ???
« on: June 27, 2012, 01:19:28 AM »
Fess up guys how many generators do you have. I've got an old Dayton 14 amp,two military 2 cyl about 13 amp, four cyl. military 110/220 single and three phase on a trailer and my favorite ST-1 lister and st-10 gen.The small ones are 3600 screamers the four cyl mil.goes through gas like grass through a goose. The lister is for long term outages. Generators / Variable capacitor
« on: June 24, 2012, 12:22:41 PM »
Is there any such critter.?Still thinking about induction generators.I'am a pilgrim when it comes to electrial circuts, could larger caps be used with a reostat in series to adjust voltage or would it take multiple sets of caps and a means to switch them.??Thanks Frank C.

Generators / Lister house
« on: June 15, 2012, 12:52:41 PM »
Well my ST-1 Lister and ST-10 head are all mounted, belted and sitting on ready.Just cut some pine [handy to have a sawmill] for my combination gen/toolhouse.Going to pour concrete for the floor and engine base.Power loss is common in the northeast, snow load takes down limbs and you know the rest.Plan ahead. Frank C.

Generators / Motor conversions
« on: June 15, 2012, 12:02:52 PM »
Would it be practical for a company to offer brushless rotors to convert common three phase motors to alternators, say a Baldor,Marithon 10 hp.Would such a rotor be beyond the capibility of a home machinest.?? Frank C.

Lister Based Generators / Air cooled diesel
« on: June 09, 2012, 02:23:26 AM »
When I first found my ST-1 Lister I was a little dissapointed wanted the classic "coffee grinder" Lister but the more I work with the air cooled the better I like it.It makes for a very compact generator set no tanks or radiators. It turns faster and can be direct coupled to an 1800 head. Temporarily bolted to two 8x8" timbers untill I can pour cement and build its own home.Listers and bird guns don't like to live alone,I'am still looking for a companion. Frank C.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Lister tip
« on: June 08, 2012, 02:15:26 AM »
Many of the older Reed screen all vibritory screeners used two cylinder  air cooled Listers. Its tough dusty duty and they require more rebuilds than normal ,some are replaced with outher engines. Keep your eyes peeled. Frank C.

Generators / Single bearing mount
« on: June 05, 2012, 12:23:20 PM »
The very prolific chinese "silent" generator that everyone rebadges such as Aurora,Everlast est. with the Yanmar L 100 clone diesel,do they use a standard generator mount. Will outher single bearing generators bolt up to their tapered shaft, does anyone know.? In outher words is their an industry standard,or does each manufacturer run hog wild. Thanks Frank C.
