Thank You Butch. Those work. Is there a decent radius on the rod journal?

You could also use something like Boeshield or Fluid Film, both of which need to be reapplied every year or so. Lanolin and Linseed oil work as well but they too have to be reapplied every so often. If you are keeping them lubed properly though there shouldn't be much rust going on. You could always blue them or do a black oxide coating.

Grease and or oil seem to work pretty well.  ;D

Except for the push rods those are all parts that should be oiled regularly or coated with grease.

Nice! I never get tired of pictures of these things torn down and being put back together properly. Would you mind taking a few pics of the crankshaft and pinion gear? My crank has some issues and am still debating having a pinion gear made and repairing the crank or giving an Indian crank a shot. Just curious about how close the Indian cranks match the originals especially since I have SOM flywheels.

Lister Based Generators / Re: Identify this?

Being as it came with a 3.5/1 it is likely a 1.5kw unit or less. It appears from the switchboard to be capable of being used as a starter motor which is a plus in my book. Since it appears to be a DC unit, I would think if the voltage is in an acceptable range that it could be used to run a small inverter.

What are you looking to do with it? I would replicate the switch board with modern components, the adjustment and start/run sections at least to make it usable.

It sounds a lot like what starfire is describing from the wording on the tags. Sounds like it has the ability to be used as a starting motor and then switched over to generating.

What is the wording on the copper tag around the toggle switch and the copper horseshoe around the adjuster knob?

Sure looks like a Busch generator head of some sort to me.

That's an interesting looking pulley. As far as wiring you would need a model # to track down a wiring diagram, or someone who knows generators/motors well enough to figure out what wire does what with a meter.

If it came with a Start-O-Matic set it may have a generator winding and a DC starting/charging winding as well. How about a picture of the wires and terminals from above. That may help. Pictures of the switchboard may offer some clues as well.

Looking good. I wish I was as far along on my rebuild as you are.

Listeroid Engines / Re: SOM flywheel upgrade!

Those should make for a nice upgrade. They really are nice chunks of iron aren't they. Mine are sitting in the floor and look much like those, just waiting to be stripped and painted.

As far as a coating I settled on a single stage urethane paint. Urethane is pretty stinky and a respirator should be worn but most any decent coating is going to be. Most are brush-able if you don't have spray capabilities. Or, I think Eastwood makes some urethane paints in aerosol form. I have seen a few CS on youtube where the outer rim was left unpainted and clear coated. Looks like a nice detail to showcase the cast iron and makes the serial number and ignition/timing marks easier to read.

the latest offer I got was $1500 plus shipping, in order to avoid confusion.

How much are you hoping to get? $1500 is a good offer. There are SOM setups(heavy flywheel CS with generator) on Ebay for £700-800 obo and spoked flywheel versions like what you have listed for less than that.

Nicely done. What did you use for the cleanup? The heads look great.

I don't have any experience with an ST head but just priced rewinding a 5 HP 3 phase motor and it was $550. New motor was around $875.

So whats it worth in US?

It depends on the condition. Do you know if everything still works, is it complete? I paid £250 for a 4KW head and imported it to the US. Mine is a North American spec(60 hz) head that has the start winding but no start-o-matic panel. I would think that one in good condition would probably be worth at least $500 here in the US. The only issue is freight. It is probably a couple of hundred $ to get it shipped here. Is the box you are describing the start-o-matic panel or the transformer, resistor, etc that mounts to the top of the gen head? I have no idea of the market in the UK, seems you guys have things like this readily available unlike here in the US.

Do you have a picture of the setup?
