http://http://listerenHello Lister brothers out there, allow me to introduce ourselves. My friend Tony the Dutchman (50
years mechanic of which 10 + years were with Rabbit Diesels) and I, Dennis, (30 + years as an
electronic technician) have been in the background for a while and it's time for us to jump in and say
HI.
I bought a 10-1 Lister (LOVSON) and 10kw generator head in 2006 (from an outfit in Texas) and we
had it running by mid 2007.
About 8 months ago we found this Lister blog. VERY COOL!!! We have immensely enjoyed reading
the many issues that are on this site. We cannot express the fun it has given us.
One more note before I begin, we are really impressed with the quality of workmanship we have seen
in this blog.
We can tell that by using some of the ideas on this site, it may help us to reach our goal of 7 hours/gal.
We'd like to tell our story and the experiences we've gained. Hopefully, some of the things we have
done and now share, will help others.
We have had to keep things simple working from our pile of nuts, bolts, leftover scrap metal and
Volkswagen spare parts. Lastly, without my friend Tony and his machine shop, life would have been
miserable and the “project” would never have come to pass. We've been working on this blog for 3
months one evening a week when we weren’t reading and laughing at things that we were reading on this
blog site.
For 4 years our fuel consumption was 4 hr/gal.
The average load was probably no higher than 2 kw.
We've been running at 990rpm and probably run it about 500 hours per year.
Because I live off the grid our highest use is in the winter where we run it in the morning and in the
evening every day to keep the batteries charged and the laundry done. As the days get longer the usage
gets shorter until sun takes over and the running time gets down to 0 unless needed for power tools.
In 2006 when the Lister arrived, the first thing we did was to tear down the head and cylinder and do
the following improvements.
1. We port matched the intake and exhaust ports.
2. Machined the head for a thermostat. (picture)
3. Did a 3 angle valve job and shimmed the valve springs with a .060 spacer to increase the spring
pressure because many cam and lifter problems, and valve guide problems are caused by soft valve
springs.
4. Resurfaced the head. (picture)
5. Ground the lifters to make them true (as they were not square with the cam) and put a slight crown
on them to cause them to spin while running. (picture)
6. We tied down the fuel line to the head to eliminate the vibration of the metal high pressure fuel
line to prevent fatiguing and breaking of the line. (picture)
7. Installed a larger fuel tank (10 gallon rabbit diesel spare tank).
8. Changed the exhaust valve adjustment setting from .032 to .025
Stay tuned for the next blog to hear how we reached 6 hours per gallon.ginegallery.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=7120&g2_serialNumber=2[/flash]
