Listeroid Engines / twin cam question
« on: April 24, 2012, 03:26:55 PM »
Hey all,
While looking at my Ashwamegh 2/25 cam I have noticed that the cam carrier (the bearing) is sized at 2.495 while the hole in the case measures 2.510 that leaves about .015 of play between the two.

It seems like alot of "slop" to me.  Wont' the cam "walk" with this much play ? I was wondering if I should make up a shim to take out some of the excess play. A soda can looks like about .004 to .005 and I'm thinking a "band" shim would be about right ??

I have read all the archived reading about the twins breaking cams , etc. and am concerned about this matter.

What do you guys think ?? Am I worried about something that I should not be ??

I hope I have written this so everyone understands the question.

fab,
I would have thought the same thing if it were not for all the reading I have done here. I don't think tanking it would have got all the sand out. There were places where the sand was mixed with "casting flash" 1/2" thick as well as pockets that had metal over sand pockets.

I would much rather have spent the time doing something else but I'm glad I did what I did.

I thought you guys might like a change of pace...........

After several hours with paint stripper, pressure washer, needle scaler and die grinder I finally got some paint on "the beast".
In the first pic I'm about 1/2 done...

The last picture shows about 10% of the sand inside the case. For those of you who have never done this before I can tell you exactly where the sand is........where you did not look !!!

mauicole,
No, the bearing that looks damaged is on the other end. I looks like the "fillet" on my crank is too large as well as the "thrust" or endplay bearing surface too small.

The gear side of the crank bearing has no marks, as though it has never "seen" the gear. Its is a good thing because as you said yours had a flaw in the gear , mine is very rough on the
gear face and will need a clean up and polish as well.

I was thinking of Horsepoor's idea of another hole located above the camshaft on the block behind the cover.....I even thought of a 3/8" hole with a brass plug IN THE COVER so I could pull the plug and oil this area from time to time.....the  "reed in the wind" idea I've never seen but have to admit it's a neat idea

I am leaning to fabricators idea as this is what I thought when I first saw what a stupid mistake I'd made............

It's plain to see where I ended with first driil and should have stopped there.

Here we can see where the engine was hammering the extra .020 of endplay.

Think there is enough area for the bearing ? Look at the scuff in the corner and the wear on the bearing area.

The gov. end bearing looks like it has not been touched

I don't understand how the no. 2 cyl. injector pump cam and lobe are getting oil ??  What am I missing ? ( other than the obvious !!)

Bob,
The "mistake" is on the PTO side. I thought the sleeve idea would be the best fix......

There is a crank shop "down the road" that advertises "underwater welding" I may give them a call next week.
Standard Crank has done some wonderful things throughout the years for me that I have always been happy with. They did a 1956 Hemi crank for me that had to have the front welded and reground to a newer timing gear size. ( it is an industrial engine that had a gear drive that was changed to a chain drive for "the street".

I coulld be wrong but I just don't think ( that is probibly an understatement !) it is that severe.

sailawayrb  has given me a lot to think about...the damage is past the keyway but far from the "bearing area".

The crank has about .025 end play and looks like it has damaged 1 of the main bearings from the "slop'". It also looks like there is not enough bearing area for the "thrust" or endplay to "ride" on. The crank may have to be welded and "fixed" in these areas anyway.
One end has run against the bearing with a lot of wear and the other end has never come close to the bearing.

I will post some more pics today to give everyone a better idea of what I'm seeing.

I can never thank you guys enough for your ideas,

Listeroid Engines / key puller part 3

Well after waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much work, sweat and swearing I am where I am.

I fabbed up Quinns tool idea and after about 3 turns on the lead screws the head of the key POPPED right off.

OK,  lets try this again....I fabbed the drill guide, also Quinns idea, and drilled the 1/8" with no problem. After drilling the 5/16" I could see that I had just a little metal left over so I made a longer and larger drill bit...11/32" and went ahead....I kept seeing metal at the bottom of the hole so I kept drilling....stupid me....The flywheel was almost against the case so I could not see or get anything between them (both sides were like this)... after drilling, trapping and cussing some more I welded a threaded rod to what was left of the key and put my slide hammer on that....Half the key came out after about 12 or 15 good hard wacks.....The other half came out after much tapping and prying and pulling.......so here we are.....

The damage on the crank I do not consider to be a super big deal, but maybe it is ?????? Worst case would be to send it out and have it welded and ground or I'm thinking a dab of JB weld and little file and paper work. The damage is just into the seal area.....perhaps a sleeve and different seal......Maybe turn the seal the other direction and to the good area.....My options are not limited I don't think.

What do you guys think ????

Thanks for all the help from everyone !!!

Cord,
Good deal....have fun with it !
As for the tank, ditch it ! They are such junk, if you don't have a problem with it now you will later.
I don't weld aluminum because I don't have the tools for it so I had a local shop fab one up for me. I made the brackets and straps. A "tee" on the bottom for drain if needed and a good brass and stainless shut off. 1/4" rubber for padding and I shoud be set for years.

The pics tell all.

Hey all,
You guys always have great ideas.

My puller is made from 1/2" steel so I don't think it is bending or is weak. The bolts are 7/16" hardened cap screws and I did have washers behind them against the flywheel. I guess after the first one went pretty good I just got in a hurry and made this mistake.

I like Quinnf's idea of the "wedge" as well as his puller.

I will probibly go with Quinnf's ideas but at this point I'm in no hurry and will probibly think about it for a couple of days before I attack it again.

Listeroid Engines / key puller help part 2
« on: April 04, 2012, 11:51:29 PM »
Well I guess I screwed this up ! Got in too big of a hurry with the puller and ended up with this.

So here is what I'm thinking. If you look at the pic of the puller I made you will see I have a "mistake" hole to the right of the top bolt. ( I hate that ) I'm thinking of adding a few more holes with "puller bolts" in them to add more pulling power.  And perhaps a little help from the "smoke wrench"......Any thoughts on this one ??
