Generators / 7.5 st update
« on: September 21, 2015, 10:07:46 PM »
I did a cleanup, sprayed well with the red "varnish", new bearing
and added wood and epoxy shims to the loose bobbin.

I get just a little imbalance growl when the load gets up to about
10 to 12 amps on one side.....man, I'm happy with that !

This unit came with the AVR and "modern" rectifier.  Whoa, almost
forgot the DIGITAL volt/frequency meter. What will those Indians
think of next ??

Just though you guys might like an update.

Carry on,
Gary

Generators / what I found so far...
« on: September 19, 2015, 06:04:08 PM »
What started this is......new 7.5 st
After unloading I noticed a tiny "knock" when turning
by hand. Not terrible by any means but it was there.
It spun good but a barley noticeable knock.

After bolting up and loading it with 2 space heaters
, one on each leg, I noticed the imbalance growl.

I have it apart now. The front bearing, sealed but with
the inside cover off and rolling around the shaft. It feels
OK but I will replace it. Back bearing seems fine.
The knock you ask ?  One of the wound bibbins is a ltttle
loose on its mount...

Generators / I got it, now what ?
« on: September 16, 2015, 11:12:04 PM »
So, I recieved the Grainger box today with the red varnish. I thought I was
getting Glyptol but it looks like a knockoff. Probibly an
oversite on my part, never the less, it should provide
the same results.

My question is, now what ?

Do I need to remove the stator or just spray over
the inside ?

I got 2 -20 oz. spray cans.....enough, too much ?

Whats the method you guys use ?

Thanks for your time,
Gary

Generators / ST HEAD question
« on: September 13, 2015, 05:01:47 PM »
I purchased a new 7.5 kw head and it has the dreaded
imbalanced load noise.

I remember reading links about somesort of coating you guys
use on the inside to protect the "guts". Seems like I remember
reading it will help the balance noise. Gryptal .....is that it ?

Maybe a link to to method ?

Thanks for your time,
Gary

Listeroid Engines / Low sulfur fuel ??
« on: February 09, 2015, 08:52:02 PM »
I read/heard/use the low sulfur fuel. Is this something I should be concerned about ?

I have a couple of expensive (to me, anyway) tractors and several diesel engines I play with : 2
listeroids, a changfa and a new to me Westerbeke project.

I read where a member here adds 2 stroke oil in his fuel. Is this something I should do or are
there other additives I should be adding to the fuel or am I worring about nothing ??

Thanks for looking,
Gary

Not much action on the forum as of late. I take that to mean everyone's engines must
be running to perfection !!

Listeroid Engines / the dreaded Listeroid squeeeel !!
« on: November 10, 2013, 12:47:03 AM »
Looks like after about 250 hours of running time my Metro 6/1 has developed a bearing noise. It sounds like it is in the left bearing. It is very faint and only for a few seconds at a time. I will open her up tomorrow and keep everyone up dated. It has roller bearings so if that is all there is it should be an easy fix.

Listeroid Engines / Big twin breather question
« on: March 29, 2013, 03:47:19 PM »
After a rebuild and about 10 hours running time at about 30% load I saw that the engine was 'weeping" oil everywhere. I never understood how the "reed valve" breather could work on the twin so I removed it made a blank plate and tapped the plate and the intake manifold and piped them together. Slowed down the weeping but did not stop it. I knew I would have to remove the flywheels to paint so I guess I will replace the Indian gaskets with some I cut from good gasket material and see if I can stop it.

Anyway the question is do you guys see anything wrong with the "crankcase vacume" set up I made ?

Listeroid Engines / Offset bolt/bushing
« on: March 25, 2013, 02:29:10 PM »
I have these left over from my work with my Metro 6/1 and Ashwamegh 25/2. One is about .024 and the other about .042 if any one is interested at $ 45.00 plus shipping let me know. They are not as pretty as some of the others I have seen here but they work. I turned them on my old Atlas lathe and they work fine. I may consider makeing more if enough intrest is shown. I am old and TRY to answer my messages once a day, so be patient. I will try to answer any questions you may have.

By the way I took a cut off wheel and put a slot in the end of the bolt to hold it when I set mine up. If you want that added I will provide that as well.

Listeroid Engines / Houston, we have lift off !
« on: February 28, 2013, 07:51:23 PM »
Well she started !! I have about 3  30 to 40 second runs and so far everything seems fine. I did not run any longer because I don't have a cooling system yet. Man, that thing is a beast to turn over. At nearly 60 years old it is a load ! I can see where if I decide to keep it I will HAVE to have an electric starter. I started on one about a year ago but have yet to finish it. Some more runs tomorrow and we will see.  I don,t think I could have made it this far without this forum and everyones help and advise, THANKS ALL !!!!

Listeroid Engines / I can almost smell smoke !
« on: February 27, 2013, 01:58:13 PM »
Well after about a year I am finally getting close ! To many "mods" and work to list but you guys get the point. I will remove/rework all the junk fuel system after I make sure she will run ok. Gary

Listeroid Engines / Twin cam carrier
« on: February 11, 2013, 02:00:22 PM »
After seeing that the clearance between the center cam carrier and the block were way out of line and thinking about the stories of the twins breaking cams I took a piece of brass shim stock and wrapped the carrier with a piece of .005 shim stock to reduce the clearance to almost "friction fit". I carefully glued the stock to the center carrier with JB Weld and I believe it will provide a "proper fix". I hope to have it in "running order'" in the next couple of weeks and them we will see !

Listeroid Engines / valve guide question
« on: February 04, 2013, 08:40:17 PM »
Hey guys,
Been a while but I finally have some time to work on my Ashwamegh 25/2 again. It looks like the valve guides are reversed on one of the heads. The reason I say this is because the "recessed cup" area, associated with the exhaust guide, is on the intake side. What is the procedeure for removing the guides ? Are they a press fit ?
OR do I need a new head with the proper configuration ?

Thanks for your time,
