Listeroid Engines / that spring thing
« on: January 15, 2018, 11:28:47 PM »
My 25/2 running about 720 rpms runs out of steam at 5k load.

I believe the governor spring is too heavy.

The linkages are free and easy to swing from stop to full throttle. No binding.
I added a spring or two to take all the slop out. Time was not a factor so time
was extended for proper set up.

Injector timimg, pretty much the same deal. I spent hours setting and adjusting
timing on valves and injectors.

Starts well, runs good.

With that said I am convinced the govenor spring must be on the heavy side.

Near a 5k load the engine is working harder and the hz will drop from 60/61 to 57/58
on the gen head. 11kw "stamford"clone, so I don't think thats the problem.

The rpms are dropping about 45.    720 to about 675 give or take.

The exhaust temps are within 4 degrees of each other under load.

Cooling temp leaving the heads near 190/200 with return at 160 or so.

I would think the beast should easily pull 8 or 10kw before it starts to
load up.

I say softer spring.

What y'all think ?

Generators / Stamford clone update
« on: January 01, 2018, 06:02:38 PM »
Today I drilled and slotted the generator slide.
Mounted and aligned the pulley.
Did a few test starts to check rpms and belt track.

Looks like she will be turning just over 700 rpms with the
belt/pulley set up I currently have.

After spinning that monster up 5 or 6 times I am worn out.

Stay tuned, I will get the power side up and running next week end.
I can, at that time, get some voltage and load test numbers.

Enjoy !

Generators / think this will work ?
« on: December 24, 2017, 07:56:07 PM »

After the failure of the 7.5 kw ST head I purchased
this Stamford "clone".

Will post results in the next few weeks.

Stay tuned !

Listeroid Engines / ran the twin today !
« on: December 03, 2017, 08:34:54 PM »

Haven't run this unit for a number of years so I decided to run it for a couple of hours today.
Started right up and runs great. I only have a 7.5kw head on it now so I could only load it to
about 5kw.
Thermo siphon to a 30 gallon modified metal trash can.
This unit will get a 11kw "Stamford" clone in the near future.

Enjoy !

Generators / 7.5 st head update UPDATE
« on: November 11, 2017, 04:12:07 PM »
I received the 230 avr from Tom.... here are my new numbers :

no load
237 volts....118.7 each leg

10 amp load on both legs
238 volts
109.7 on 1 leg
135 on the other

10 amp load on 1 leg
124 on 1 leg
116 on the other

The growl is much worse with an unbalanced load.
If I wanted to use it for a dedicated 230 or 115 gen set it would
probibly be fine. To use it for a 230/115 load it looks to be too much
of a spread for anything with a "sensitive" load.

I plan to call Tom again on monday to see what he has to say.

This only reinforces my decision to purchase the "stamford clone" next.

Again, I will post results.

Thanks for your time,
Gary

Generators / 7.5 st head update
« on: November 05, 2017, 02:14:35 PM »
About a year later further testing on my 7.5 head reveals more problems.

It came with the 115 avr.  When I received it it had a bad imbalance growl so I tore it down,
found loose mounting problems on some of the coils. Repaired that as well as a good spray down
with the red varnish sealer.

More testing has shown that a 10 amp load on 1 leg (115 volt) it still has a pretty nasty growl.
The avr will run away on the unregulated leg. 90 and 170 or more.

Thinking I would remove the avr and rectify the problem. Wrong ! With the avr out the output is a
nice 325 volts !

I guess I will either look for a 220 to 110 transformer or order the 220 volt regulator.

Glad I ordered a 15kw and a 7.5 kw years ago when they were better quality.

Sad.

Listeroid Engines / cooling question
« on: October 28, 2017, 06:23:42 PM »

My 6-1 runs with a Honda radiator, thermostaticly controlled fan and the orginal water pump
that I rebuilt with new bearings and seals. Works great with no problems.

My question is about the 25-2 that I have. I have run it with a 30 gal galvanised trash can that I put
fittings on to adapt hoses to. I has no water pump so it is thermo cooled. Works fine.

I would like to make it more compact and would like to add a Honda radiator with temp controlled
fan as on the 6-1.  I do have a t stat on the engine cooling manifold.

Do you guys think the coolant will thermo cycle with no water pump ?

Thanks for your time,
Gary

Changfa Engines / that Chinese coupler
« on: September 30, 2017, 11:30:52 PM »

When I acquired my changfa engine and st head a number of years ago, a direct drive coupler
was available

The said coupler has a series of o rings stacked on a set of pins that act as a bushing in a
matching drilled faceplate.

The original rubber o rings lasted for a time and needed replacement . I fabricated a set of
new ones from a 1/4" rubber sheet I had about and they lasted about 50 hrs or so.

I bought some delrin and am considering cutting some "bushings" from this material.

Any one else use this coupler and have any experience/input ?

Generators / tell me about the "brushless" heads
« on: September 14, 2017, 05:43:24 PM »
After a few bouts with storms and running a genset for quite a few hours I am considering a
brushless head.
Being "electrically challenged"  I only know I am tired of tje flickering lights. Not to say my system is
terrible, because it's not, but from what I have read the brushless heads are the way to go.

Any input ?

Listeroid Engines / need gen help....st head
« on: September 13, 2017, 03:33:51 PM »
i have run my 15kw st head the last few days, a few hours at a time.

this mornimg i am only getting about 90 volts........it has the orginal cheap Chinese diode.

think.it could be the diode ??
i cleaned the brushes and slip rings but no improvement.

fortunately i have a back up for my backup so all is not lost !

thanks for any help or input,
Gary

Generators / Changfa to the rescue
« on: October 08, 2016, 08:37:20 PM »

A friend bought a changfa 1125 and a 15kw st head about the same time
I purchased mine. At that time a Chinese coupling was available that bolted
directly the head and engine that we also got.

He brought his to my shop and we built a nice heavy frame with rollers and he took
it home where it has sat for the last 10 years or so.

Well the hurricane came through. I never lost power but he did.
SOOOOO , today he calls.......think we can get his genset running ?
I have told him for years to get it out and run it, but you know always too busy.

I ride over to his place, drag it out. A trip to his shop for a few feet of wire
and some connectors......presto, bango....30 minutes later......ah, A /C, refrigerator,
lights...all is good....

Amazing, after setting for 10 years it fired right up and runs like a champ !
We set voltage/hz with the kill o watt, I hung for an hour or so making sure
he understood start/stop and what to look out for.

I have always said I hate the noise and banging and clanging of those Changfa
engines but they always seem to run every time they are needed. I probably have
a few hundred hours on mine and it has never let me down.

My thoughts for the day,
Gary

Listeroid Engines / Hurricane update !
« on: October 07, 2016, 05:15:26 PM »

The storm shifted east early am.
We got no damage and the power didn't go out !
Watching TV it looks like minimal damage in the area.
Haven't checked all the boats yet but the few we have seen so far look fine.

We got lucky on this one.

Thanks for everyone's support,

Gary

Listeroid Engines / I'm gonna take her down..
« on: December 04, 2015, 10:03:13 PM »
I bought my Merto several years ago from Sam.

I checked her over, built a heavy frame with a 7.5 ST head
serpentine belt and put her to work. No clean up, no bronze
gear.

I have about 200 hours on it and have had no problems. BUT after
hearing everyone's warnings and the latest posting of a members
engine failure I have decided to finally break her down.

I did the usuall break in and several checks of the bearings during
the 200 hours and it shows no problems but I sure don't want a failure
so this weekend I will begin a disassembly and rebuild.

Fear has me worried now !

Wish me luck and I will let you guys how it goes.

Generators / AVR and voltage setting
« on: November 28, 2015, 03:13:41 PM »
My new 7.5 st head came from Tom with the AVR installed
and the voltage set at 220.
I want to set it for 120 volts.  Can I just move the "U" connections
and reset for 120 volts or do I have to change anything on the AVR ?

I hope this question makes sense,
Gary
