Original Lister Cs Engines / 5/1 CS with to less compression
« on: July 01, 2008, 10:39:54 AM »
Hi there,

my to be restored 5/1 CS asks me some questions I can't find an answer for.
The problem is the compression ratio or better the head <-> cylinder clearance in TDC/UDC.
The measured clearance is 1,95mm (~0.077 in). This is by far to much. A 6/1 CS should have 0.040"-0.050". And I thought it was build with the same dimensions and measurements.
This clearance was measured by me with a solder wire after removing all shims between crank case and cylinder.
What could be the reason for this? Are the bearings worn out this strong/huge/heavy?
Which bearing should I change at first? I already removed the flywheels. But I'm not sure if the crankshaft bearings or the con rod bearings or both are the reason.
I'm not a mechanic so to change the bearings is a challange for me.

Are there any other things I could do first?

Thanks
Lars

Original Lister Cs Engines / Weird original 5/1 head
« on: April 03, 2007, 02:13:16 PM »
Hallo guys,

I'm now the happy owner of an original CS 5/1.
While repairing it - because restoring would be the wrong word with my competency - it came to day that I have bought a lister with a strange head.

The injector is in direct contact with the cooling water. There is no cast iron tube (right words?) around the injector.
Have there ever been manufactured original listers like that? I think it is build in 1933/34 and sold in Belgium.
I've uploaded some pictures and a sketch to coppermine where I marked the missing cast.

What do you advice me to do with that head? Replacing?

Thanks a lot.

Listeroid Engines / Lead compression test
« on: February 28, 2007, 08:33:45 AM »
Hello again.

Here is another question I have.
To make the »lead compression test«, does the cylinder head gasket have to be in place or should I remove it before testing?
I don't know if the distance between piston and head is with or without gasket thickness.

Thanks again
Lars

Listeroid Engines / How to time the injection?
« on: February 25, 2007, 08:33:22 PM »
Hello!

Shortly I bought a JKSON 12/2 and disassembled it to
check for casting sand and to clean the dirty oil out.

After assembling it again I tried to start it.

On one cylinder this is no problem but on the second it
is nearly impossible. This simply doesn't want to ignite (detonate?)!

I run it on biodiesel.

From the second muffler only some white smoke leaves.
I'm not sure if this is from wrong compression, bad
nozzle (or dirty nozzle) or from wrong timing.

That's why I want to check everything and especially the timing.

After reading some english explainations I'm not much wiser than before.
I'm not a native english speaker. So I have my troubles.

Can someone of you explain me how I could change the timing?

I know I should adjust the tappet underneath the pump, but how?
Do I have to remove the pump therefore or the camshaft end cover?
How can I reach this tappet?
Do I have to screw the adjustment screw in or out for a later injection?

Many thanks and best greetings
Lars

Other Fuels / slow speed petrol/gasoline listeroids
« on: July 27, 2006, 08:55:18 AM »
Hallo,

are there some of the old style slow speed petrol/gasoline engines build in india today?
I'm thinking about running them on bio-alcohol.

Or are there other reliable slow speed petrol engines like the »Lister L« built today?

Thanks

Petteroids / original Petter 8-10HP on german ebay
« on: July 13, 2006, 11:51:37 AM »
Hallo,

only FYI. There is a working, original petter for 120€ at the german ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=018&item=280005098765

Maybe I could buy it for someone to switch it with an original working 5HP lister.

Any interest?

Lars
