Thanks for that there is deep pitting and I think that this is caused by cavitation is this the same thing, some modern wet liner engines use "super coolant" and i have been offered some of this by a friend. I  suppose thats whats making me think would I be better cleaning the liners and leaving theme bare if using this.

In the manual for the JK6 it states to paint the outside of the liners before installing, I am intending to run antifreeze - corrosion inhibitor. Is painting them still recommended and if it is what is the best type of paint.

Well things are moving on I have found two heads that are cracked but I have three that are good, leaving one spare. I have started stripping the pistons and liners from the boat and on removing the 1st one the big end bearing has had it.

Question if the big ends have gone will the main bearings have had it also, the crank dosn't look bad but to remove the mains i would have to remove the gearbox and split the crankcase which is a pain.

Also number six liner has broken off at one side at the bottom I found one bit in the sump but no sign of the others any one got any ideas why this could have broken.

The parts for the engine all seem expensive and its getting to the point where I wonder if its worth repairing the engine ore replacing it with an alternative.

Engines / Lister JK6

I have recently bought a barge powered by a 1957 JK6 it has not run for years and I have been informed that it had head gasket failure. I have been talking to some locals who know JK6 engines from years ago and they say they are prone to cracking heads if run with low water or if they are allowed to freeze. I have bought spare JK6 off a generator with low hours that had been run without oil and seized. I have stripped the spare engine and the heads seem fine but the crank is u/s. The liners are perfect and the pistons show little wear however they are pitted where water has stood on top of them. I intend to refurbish the engine in the barge using parts off the generator if required and have a few specific questions, please bear in mind that the engine will have to be serviceable and reliable

1. are the heads prone to cracking and if they are can you see the cracks or do i need to pressure test the heads
2. is there a suitable 24v alternator that has the correct sized pulley as the dynamo - voltage regulator dont look to good
3. what is the best antifreeze to use when

I have a lister maual and a disk with some additional notes on, I also found a complete head gasket set in the engine room today :-)
