Lister Based Generators / Re: induction motor as generator fail
« on: April 10, 2017, 01:22:21 PM »
The answer is a lot of us have time to experiment The sense of achievement after we have got it working is great. This system will work well on steady loads such as lights and heaters but for fluctuating loads the alternator with an AVR is the answer.

Google "Motors as generators by N. Smith available as a PDF and goes into a lot more theory and will help you calculate the starting size for your capacitor. Originally developed for hydro in Sri Lanka but applicable to your project

Engines / Re: Trolley For single Cylinder DIY Generator.

You can forget the Supacheap trolleys they bend the bottom plate and the rims are only pressed coke cans. You need a real bag trolley with the steel wheels probably only obtainable at a clearing sale or the dump. Sorry I meant refuse transfer station.

The Honda diesels have their generators on 4 rubber feet and knowing them they would be tuned to the 3000rpm they run at. Works well but makes them very hard to drag over the ground. I wheel it around on a bag trolley to get it where it needs to go.

Maybe I am a cynic but this seems to be laying the ground work for yet another increase in energy prices. Because of the outcry about electricity prices in various states the companies realize they need to provide reason for the next price hike. This prediction is from  AEMO whose can't manage to get enough generators on line when there is an excursion from normal demand. It seems strange that electricity workers are considered to be essential service employees and have legislation forbidding them to withdraw their labour yet generators can tell AEMO to get stuffed if the price isn't right.

Everything else / Re: Blasphemy..... Solar power.

The electricity suppliers here pay $0.5 per Kwh but limit the size of the inverter to 5 Kw and according to my contract will do so until 2025. Any changes such as change of owner etc. and all bets are off the price goes down to $0.08 per Kwh. Here in summer we have at least 6 hours when it puts out 4 Kw. so i have a big credit with the supplier. Some day I will ask them to pay me that credit and I will see how forthcoming they are. Then there is another problem the tax office treats this as income so I will wait till I have a low income year before I make a grab for it.

Engines / Re: Repairing a cracked Cylinder.

Getting a liner to fit isn't a problem.I had a LD1 rebored with a liner to fit the undersized worn piston as it was cheaper route to go. But welding a cylinder and the attempting to bore it would be a drama I would think.

Engines / Re: LD1 fuel pump set up question

A few rough measurements for your rack length. These may be out by a couple of mm as it is a bit hard to get a ruler in there. Measured from the boss on the R.H. end on the fuel pump to end of the rack. When stopped from the boss to the end of the shaft--19 mm.    Excess fuel position is --26 mm  The witness mark on the shaft is 8 mm from the flat on the R.H. end of the shaft. I would be quite happy to swap some of our 38 to 40 deg C days  for some of your colder ones.

From what I can remember the LD1 has a sheetmetal latch with a protrusion on it. The fuel lever is clicked over this latch to start it. This allows the rack to move to an excess fuel position. The 0.010 clearance allows for a slight overload and it is so the engine doesn't blow clouds of black smoke on a severe overload. If nobody can come up with an answer before I will get the measurements for you on the weekend. A thought just occured to me maybe you can't see the reference mark because the rack has been assembled incorrectly because it is quite prominent on the R.H. end of the rack shaft.

General Discussion / Re: Synthetic oil - Diesel or Gas rated ?

You may have been thinking of E.P. gear oils which contain sulphur and  phosphorus compounds to deal with the sliding friction in gear trains. They are corrosive to the bras and copper alloys used in gearbox bearings and synchro cones.

General Discussion / Re: Cheap 10Kva generators in West Australia
« on: November 06, 2016, 01:47:39 PM »
I have been keeping my eye open for something about 10 Kva to run my plasma cutter in my workshed. At the moment I use a 60 year old 4Kva S.O.M. Because it doesn't have the later transformer regulator it requires a bit of patience when you whack a sudden load on it is just a bit slow to respond or gives up and drops out the contactorand sulks, a bit like me who is just a bit older than it. The plasma will run at 30 amps on an 8Kva petrol generator and sometimes I would like to cut something a bit thicker than 0.25 in plate. The compressor is powered by an LD1 which is a lot more reliable at starting than the B&S it used to have. The workshop is about 1/2 Km from the house and the original quote to run the power would have required a casket win to finance it.

Looking in Grays online auction site I see Coates the hire firm is disposing of about 20 lighting tower generators. All 1500 rpm and driven by cat or perkins 3 cylinder diesels these would have a lot of hours on them I guess so an inspection would be necessary. But at $69.00 for the dearest the last time I looked these could be a good buy.

I understand that there is a maintainence cost to the distribution network but I wonder why it is dearer than the maintainence charge for my Telstra line which is exclusive From the Exchange to my premises.Whereas the electricity line is shared by 20 people on the common line from the transformer at the end of my road. The biggest rip off is the individual charge in multiple dwellings where there may be 10 units all fed by the one lead in but all paying the $1.20 a day or thereabouts for the shared line. Having talked to the electricity ombudsman this rip off is allowed by law at the moment. But I have been harassing my local state representative for some answers about this so far with no sensible answers.

For those that would like to run their alternators a little faster I decided to look up the speeds for maximum output for some brands and found that Delco Remy do 5000rpm Prestolite depend ing on the model 2300 to 4500  CAV 5000 Bosch 7000 and Lucas with the inbuilt regulator 6000.  The only manufacturer I can find who gives output Vs speed figures is CAV and their biggest model which is 60 amps would only output 25 amps at 1500 trpm.
