Listeroid Engines / Re: Unusually loud Knocking - Help
« on: May 04, 2012, 06:51:25 PM »

Flywheels are good.
I will start with the IP timing and report back.

Ronmar, I did experience a considerable reduction in mechanical noise and exhaust noise by dropping to 465 rpm.
This GM90 engine is a 900 rpm, 8hp version.

cheers,

Listeroid Engines / Unusually loud Knocking - Help
« on: May 04, 2012, 05:13:15 AM »
Hi All,

I have been experimenting with various speeds to run my listeroid for two reasons.
1] Sound control in a residential neighborhood
2] I only need a maximum of 800 to 1000 watts to charge a battery bank for 2-3 hrs. each day.
    ( 55 amps X 12 volts = 660 watts + 20% for losses = 792 watts )

I have been swapping pulleys and belt combinations to get 1000 watts of power when fully loaded and at a reasonably low speed.
The magic speed for the engine/generator seems to be 465 rpm.
The system has gone very quiet EXCEPT FOR THE DIESEL KNOCK !   Angry    It stayed.
Wow ! the ignition sounds like a guy hammering on an anvil with a sledge hammer.

I don't think I'm anywhere close to the point where the engine is in a hammer/detonation mode.
Many other members have run at speeds lower than this.

My question to everyone is in regards to injector timing and injector spring setting.

A] When I first got the engine 2 years ago, the Lovson factory suggested I loosen the injector spring screw by 1/2 turn if I wish to run the engine slower. Does this make sense ?

B] And what about injector timing. Has anyone been able to control knock by retarding the timing ?

cheers,
veggie

Did you get a "Monday" engine ? :D
I have a few JiangDongs (size 175 and 180) with no problems.
Fairly good workmanship and finish.
I also have 2 Changfa's with which to compare the JiangDongs.

This one has a sensor which clamps to one of your injector lines.
It does not need external power. Works in single or multi cylinder engines

Listeroid Engines / Re: Idler Gear Wear (none) 2200 hrs

BruceM,

Thanks for that feedback. Very helpful.
I bought a .020" offset Idler Pin but have not yet installed it.
It could be that the offset idler is more of a contributor to gear life than the material (cast vs. bronze).

The pump is a small bronze gear pump made by Sterling. Model # AJN
Ports are 1/2" NPT
At the 650 rpm that I run at, it pumps 3 gallons per minute.

Veggie, very nice work and modifications. I have wanted to install an oil pump/filter like yours. I googled and searched for the Sterling Model AJN and found nothing. Where did you buy yours?

Bought it a a store called Princess Auto (Canada)

It's interesting to hear a Lister(oid) running on gas without any diesel knock !

Looks like a spark ignition system was added. Pity it's a fluff video with no good info on the design.. like compression changes, gas metering, etc.

Hey BruceM,

Dig a bit deeper. There are more informational videos from that group, and I think they have a web site for the project.
One of the team members is a member of this forum but I can't remember his handle.

Update....

Giving the engine longer runs at full load.
The vapor from the breather tube is disappearing. Piston Rings seem to be seating nicely.

32coupe,

Some of the METRO's were direct injections heads.
What's yours ?
That could have some bearing on your fuel consumption.

A beautiful looking setup. !
Is there any movement at all when you run it on the smooth concrete floor ?
Looks like you might have enough base mass there to prevent any "walking".

FIRST SMOKE (again)

Got my little LR1 running today after a long dormancy and a trip from the UK to North America.
Thanks to TimSR2 for the pointers on bleeding the fuel system.  ;)

Runs like a champ !
