Mission accomplished! Two rings fitted to a widened top groove, two unsprung oil rings fitter in the oil grooves, ridge has been scraped, cylinder honed, cylinder with piston and rod lowered onto the bottom end, big end torqued and fitted.... I am knackered! ....

So....you put 2 compression rings into the upper ring groove ?
Interesting.
So the piston now has 5 rings instead of 4?
Any concern about the top ring getting adequate lubrication ?

It's been very interesting following your "experiments". Thanks for posting.
Looking forward to the future updates.
Happy Christmas !

dkmc, if you properly read the replies, there was no inference to YOU SELLING engines. The subject of selling was discussed because it is an important issue which delineates the ways in which EPA engines are regulated. So....the point is that if YOU do not build/import engines to sell them you should be ok building a custom engine for yourself.( Or making patterns and parts for yourself....or making plans and drawings for the web....or anything you want to do, other than Selling Engines).

Gents,

If castings (or patterns) for parts are available (or fabricated) I believe it is completely ok to go ahead and build an engine for yourself. For private use.
The issue starts when engines are imported for sale and distribution.
So, if someone wanted to build an engine from parts (maybe some bought parts and some home manufactured parts to make a more modern version of the 6/1) I don't think that would be an issue.
There are many many examples of hobbyists building their own engines.
Example...

If you scratch build for personal "off road" (stationary) use and do not sell them as a business I believe it's totally legal.
The EPA is concerned with manufacturers and mass distribution.
So the "Maker" revolution that is currently underway would lend itself to this.
Draft up drawings in 3D CAD. Place them on the web as "Open Source", and watch the hobbyists go to work !  ;D

Listeroid Engines / Re: RPM's and governer
« on: November 12, 2015, 08:26:13 PM »

My GM90 Listeroid is rated 8HP @ 900 rpm.
I run it at 450 rpm with no issues, so yes you should be able to run anywhere between 650 and 1000 with no issues.
(Perhaps a lighter spring on the governor may be in order)

Some (including Lister startomatics) add a heavy flywheel to the generator head also.

Listeroid Engines / Re: I am VINDICATED !!!!

Wow !

Unfortunately that is the case. The majority of people do not have a clue how to make things work when the grid is absent.
In an extended outage, the biggest threat is "other people", not the outage itself.
There seems to be no preparedness mindset and a total reliance on the "system".

Listeroid Engines / Re: What If I did this?
« on: October 15, 2015, 03:03:38 PM »
As a person who imported many (from two different suppliers) I can tell you that I did not see a single engine that did not need some work.

1]The most common ailment was a poorly fitted con rod bearing. Usually waaaay too much clearance (like 10 to 15 thou") which would cause bearing destruction in short order.
I made a point of changing them out immediately or giving the buyer a new set of shells,
Many uneducated buyers would not notice the con-rod knock mixed in with the rest of the engine noise and many users of listeroids put little few hours on them so it would take some time for un-serviced bearing shells to raise an issue.

2]The second most common thing I noticed was cylinder liner protrusion above the deck. While 0.005" is the desired number, I saw many at 0.020" and this made it hard for the head gasket to seal the water passages because the cyl. head sat higher than it should. A thick gasket and a lot of lacquer at the factory got them to pass the run test.

Listeroids can be (and are) good engines if given a bit of attention at the start. And the price of spares certainly makes them good candidates for alternative fuels.
So go for it ! The cost of a set of rings and an injector may be greatly offset by the savings in fuel cost. Each person's methods and setup is different so you have to do the math and see if it works for you.
Oh...and the hobby factor ! sometimes it's just so much fun that the $$$ don't matter (within reason)  ;D

Listeroid Engines / Re: 350 rpm 6/1?
« on: October 14, 2015, 06:04:13 PM »
650rpm,

Here's a newer video of the 350 rpm listeroid charging the battery bank.
The Delco 33si spins at 3000 rpm and provides a maximum of 95 amps to the batteries.
The lid of the battery box has a 3000 watt mod-sine inverter mounted to it (not shown).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKbUQqNq3Xs&feature=youtu.be

If you do slow your listeroid down to this level you may need to modify your governor in two ways.
1] As a minimum you will likely need a lighter spring. I found a spring approx. 1/2 the tension of the stock unit.
2] As noted by others, you may need to add mass to you governor weights in order to get any throttle response at low speeds.
At 300 to 350 rpm the governor weights barely react to small increases in load.

hope this helps,
Veggie

650rpm,

I run my Listeroid at 350 rpm.
Runs nice and steady. Exhaust is very quiet.
The alternator is a Delco 33Si spinning at 3000 rpm making 95 amps (1140 watts)  @12 volts.
The engine only makes about 2.5HP at this speed.

There are many examples of users running listeroids between 350 and 500 rpm.

Here are just a few:

This one at 450 rpm..

This one is running at 340 rpm...

Here is a "working" listeroid at 370 rpm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-GparTbch0

In the past I configured mine to run at 400 rpm.
No mods to the governor except for a lighter spring on the external linkage.
The biggest problem is that the governor response is poor in relation to fast changes in load.
If you choose to run at 350 rpm I suggest you consider generating DC power with an alternator instead of running your ST head.
I had mine connected to a Leese alternator and it seemed to perform quite well.

Cheers,
Veggie
