Generators / New Project - Lister SR2 with ST5 head
« on: March 26, 2014, 07:31:35 PM »
I am fairly far along with my latest project so I thought I would post a pic.
This is a Lister LR2 (which I purchased from a forum member) connected to an ST-5 generator head.
The base was designed to keep the components mounted as close together as possible to make a compact unit.
The odd looking feet on the base are Navy engine vibration isolators.
The isolators are very soft and absorb virtually all vibration and movement.
I have some final modifications to do with the electrical and then I should be able to post a video of the unit in action.

Listeroid Engines / Crankcase Vapors - Vent or burn?
« on: January 02, 2014, 02:40:46 PM »
Yesterday I gave my Listeroid a 4 hour maintenance run at 80% load.
At the end of the run, my garage smelled like the inside of the crankcase.
I do have a working check valve on the crankcase breather and there is no visible vapors emitting from the case
and no oil forming at the discharge of the check valve.
However, the place was thick with the smell of sump oil vapor.

So my question is....
Can I route the crank vapors to the inlet port and burn them?
Or do I have to vent the case to the outdoors ?

I have read some discussion in the past about the possibility of a "runnaway" if vapors get too heavy from excessive ring blowby but I have never heard of this actually happening to anyone.
Opinions ? recommendations ?

thanks,

I'm trying to get an idea of the noise levels from an SR2 compared to the 6/1CS Listers or the mid sized Changfa's? (Changfa's are NOISY ! )
I am mounting and SR2 to a ST5 head on a steel base which will rest on rubber isolators and be bolted to a garage floor.
The engine is slowed to 1400 rpm for driving the ST-5 head.

I have not yet run this engine (which I bought 1 year ago) and I am wondering if, with adequate muffler(s) and being in an enclosed garage, will the entire neighborhood hear it whenever I run the generator ?

Anyone with an SR2 or ST2 (or knowledge of them), how would you rate the noise levels and what measures have you take (if any) to keep it quiet.

Waste Vegetable Oil / How are you pre-heating your WVO before the injector
« on: September 26, 2013, 04:15:46 AM »
Hi Everyone,

This is for my GM90 Listeroid:

I now have my WVO fuel tank mounted and the fuel supply lines are divided by a 3-way ball valve close to the Injector Pump.
I am ready to set up my VO pre-heating system and I would like to know what systems have worked for many of us members.
In my inventory I have some 30" long ni-chrome heating wires (120 vac).
I also have a small plate heat exchanger which I could tie into the coolant lines for a supply of 180f heat if needed.
My initial plan was to just heat the injector line with the heating wire an see how that worked.

How are you doing it ?
Suggestions welcome.

cheers,

>>>>>>> NO LONGER AVAILABLE <<<<<

Anyone getting tired of hand cranking your Lister(roid) ?
I have an air starter module for sale.
Works very well. Just bolt it to your frame, connect air, and swing the blue lever.
Used approx. 5 times until I put my big 6/1 listeroid into storage.
(I do not require this starter on my smaller GM90 diesel)

- Built with a brand new GAST air motor.
- Adjustable pressure regulator (for adjusting how much traction you need).

Price is $175 (buyer pays shipping)

PM me if interested.

Here is a video showing the unit in operation...

Listeroid Engines / StartOmatic-Roid
« on: May 20, 2013, 03:50:40 PM »
Hi All,

I saw a video of someone else who did this and I thought it was a great idea.
I purchased a golf cart Starter/Generator and mounted it on the Listeroid.
There are two circuits to configure.
1] Starting circuit which uses a constant duty solenoid for the heavy pulling.
2] Charging circuit which is wired to the second set of windings in the motor.

Once the motor rpm exceeds approx. 1500, it starts back feeding to the battery.
The voltage regulator controls the field current in the second set of charge windings.

The wiring looks a bit messy because I just finished the job and have yet to tidy it up.
The standing battery voltage read 12.7 and when I started the unit, the charger was pushing 13.2 vdc.
I have not yet done any amperage reading so I don't know what the Generator is capable of.

Hi All,

I have some small ST Heads for sale if anyone is planning a small project.

2 - ST-2 Heads  $215
1 - ST-3 Head   $235

They are brand new.
They are still in crates and I can put them on a truck to just about anywhere.
Probably does not make economic sense to ship to the USA from Canada, however it is probably
worthwhile for anyone in Canada who is looking for an ST type head for a project.

Drop me a PM if interested or need more info.

cheers,

Listeroid Engines / Governor Drift issue - help please :-)
« on: March 16, 2013, 10:21:35 PM »
Hi All,

The last 4 times I ran my engine, I have had a hard time getting it to hold a set speed.

When I apply load (say 1.5kw) the engine bogs down to 57hz and stays there (only 1/2 loaded).
So, I increase the speed a bit to get 60hz while it's loaded.
When I release the load, it revs up to 68hz. !!
I add load again, it drops right back to 56...57...58...57 and does not recover.

If I adjust the linkage to get 59hz to 60hz under 1.5kw load, it slowly revs back up to 68 HZ when the load is release (takes about 30 seconds to reach 68hz).

I have previously done the spring modification to reduce any play in the linkage.
Although there seems to be excessive play at the pin joint on the rack.
Clevice is very loose in the lever bore.

Could this loose pin joint create the symptoms described above or am I chasing two different problems here ?

Has anyone else had to solve this loose plunger/bore fit at the rack connection ? If so, how did you solve it ?

Cheers,
Veggie

Listeroid Engines / Exhaust gas temperatures - 3kwListeroid
« on: February 18, 2013, 02:36:22 AM »
Today I made the necessary adjustment to speed up my Listeroid and increase the kW out of the system for service as an emergency generator instead of a 450 rpm battery charger.

The changes involved...
1] Installing the correct generator pulley for 750 rpm operation.
2] Changing the governor spring to the stock 750 rpm version.
3] Slightly advancing the timing (it was retarded for slow speed operation and knock reduction).

For slow speed operation (450 rpm) I retarded the timing by screwing-in the IP lifter tappet by 1.5 turns.
Today, I backed out the tappet by 3/4 of a turn.
Not back to the factory setting, but just enough to advance the timing and still give significant knock reduction.

My question:
Does a few degrees of timing substantially effect the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) ?
The reason I ask is that after running the engine for an hour at full load (3kw) I noticed the hi temp silicone tape was burned off the first exhaust joint.
This tape has been on for many hours and has never showed any signs of heat stress.
I am trying to figure out which one caused the higher EGT's...

A] The timing retarded by 3/4 of a turn from factory stock ?
B] Or just the fact that I am now pulling full load 3kw (6hp) from the engine instead of 2kw (4hp) ?

Any ideas ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af41jQcBP7M

Oh...and.... what's the normal full load EGT temperature on a Listeroid     anyone bothered to measure that ?

Cheers,
Veggie

Listeroid Engines / Flywheel Placement - 6/1
« on: January 07, 2013, 05:02:55 PM »

I am planning to move the flywheels further away from the engine on my 6/1 Listeroid.
Are there any guidelines or limits on how far these can be moved?
Currently there is approx. 1/2" between the flywheel hubs and the engine.
I am proposing to slide to flywheels 4" away from the engine to accommodate the mounting of pulleys.
Anyone done this (or even more than 4") ?

thanks,
veggie
