General Discussion / Advice Needed - Generator Shed Build
« on: December 14, 2016, 10:01:47 PM »
Hi All,

Building construction is not my strong point so I'm fishing for a few suggestions.

Scenario:
I want to build a wood frame shed along the side of my garage to house a generator, solar controller, and a small battery bank.
On the roof of the structure will be approx 900 watts of solar panels.
The approximate size of the structure will be 5ft wide X 12 ft. long.

Obstacle:
This is a prime place to locate the "power shed" but the utilities to my house run under the ground in this area.
(Natural Gas line, Water Line, and Sewer line)
For this reason I am reluctant to drill holes and sink concrete piles.
Here in Canada frost movement can be an issue and the frost line can penetrate 5 ft.

So... my question is what options do I have as a base for the shed?
- One option is to pour a "slab on gravel" concrete pad. This pad could float with any frost heaves. Movement would be minimal.
- Another option is to build a wood beam foundation mounted on 1ft X 1ft concrete pads at each corner and in the mid points of the base.
This building is not expected to house the Listeorid so I am not too concerned about vertical vibration/thumping.

Has anyone done anything similar? or maybe have a different approach ?

Cheers,
Veggie

Things I want to Buy / Serpentine pulley source
« on: March 28, 2016, 04:24:45 PM »
Hi All,

Anyone know a source for 8 ribbed serpentine pulleys ?

I am looking for:
8 ribs
6.0" diameter
1" bore ( or taper lock bushing style )

This is to match up with the 8.34", 8 rib serpentine pulley on my ST-5 generator head

Thanks,
veggie

PS: I think it would cost me a small fortune to get one custom made locally

Changfa Engines / R175 Battery Bank Charger
« on: February 09, 2016, 02:37:39 AM »
I just completed my latest Project...
The engine is Changfa style R175 and is coupled to an ST-2kw head.
This is the first unit I have built which is directly coupled without a belt drive.
To accommodate the power pulses I sized a shaft coupling capable of 30HP even though the engine makes 6hp.  ;)
For 60hz power the engine must run at 1800 rpm, however I would like to slow it down to 1500 rpm and generate 50hz power.
This should provide quieter operation, lower fuel consumption and maybe longer engine life.
Apparently the IOTA 55 amp charger that the ST head will be powering accepts 50hz power.

There is more discussion on this subject at the following thread...

Generators / ST Head at 50 HZ
« on: February 08, 2016, 06:27:11 PM »
A couple of questions relating to ST performance...

What is the typical VOLTAGE output of a single phase 60 hz ST2 head wired for low voltage? is it 110V, or 115v, or 120v ?
Is the relationship linear between speed and voltage on an ST head ?

The ST Head will be driving an IOTA 55 amp, 12 volt battery bank charger.
IOTA states that the charger can operate anywhere between 50hz and 60hz.
Allowable input voltage to the charger is 108 to 130 VAC.

The engine/generator are direct coupled at 1800 rpm (60hz) and the engine produces far more power (and noise) than needed.
I want to know if I can slow down my diesel & ST Head to 1500 rpm (50hz) and still charge the batteries.

If the speed/voltage relationship is linear then I could theoretically reduce the engine speed to 1500 and still charge batteries and make 50 hz. power.
But the resulting voltage would be too low for the IOTA charger.
eg:   115 volt X (50/60) = 95 volts.... too low for the IOTA

so.... in order to get at least 108 volts, I would have to slow the engine down to 1674 rpm or 55 hz.

That is ... IF the relationship of ST speed and voltage are linear and the initial 60 hz voltage is 115VAC (or is it 110v ? or is it 120V?)

Generators / Distance between generator and point of use
« on: September 04, 2014, 04:30:43 AM »
Anyone here have a generator located 250 ft. or more from the house (or the point of power use)?
One possible site for me is a Barn which is approx 250 ft from the dwelling.
I would like to know if there are any issues in locating my Lister SR2 - 5kw generator in the barn and running a L--o--n--g power line to the transfer switch plug at the dwelling.
The line would be a combination of above ground (along a fence) and trenched from the fence to the dwelling.

anyone else with a run this long ?

Listeroid Engines / NG / Propane dosing on Listeroids
« on: June 26, 2014, 09:02:40 PM »
Hi All,

I fabricated a fitting for the inlet of my Listeroid to allow Gas dosing.
I know there are a few other members on the forum who have already
done this and I would like to know if my Gas nozzle is acceptable.
The nozzle is a stainless steel tube crimped at one end with 4 small holes drilled
in the middle of the air path. Upstream of this, the system has a needle valve to control flow and a regulator to manage pressure.
The needle valve can be adjusted to throttle the flow through this nozzle.
Has anyone used simple holes for this service compared to the angled nozzles used in automotive nitrous injection.
Will it work ?

Listeroid Engines / Listeroid water pump/Alternator Pulley Set Screws
« on: June 18, 2014, 09:01:20 PM »
I originally utilized the stock 5" single belt water pump pulley on my Listeroid to drive an oil pump.

I now want to use this pulley to drive a 24 volt alternator at 50 amps load (or 1200 watts... or 1.2kw....or 1.6HP)

My concern is that this pulley is attached to the crankshaft by two 3/8" set screws (no keyway or flat spot on the shaft)  :-\
The set screws were adequate for driving the 1/8 HP needed by the oil pump, but the demand from this new alternator can reach 1.6HP .
I am wondering if anyone has experience driving anything like this with their Listeroid auxiliary pulley ?

Can two set screws adequately take the 1.6HP load/torque ?

Not a great picture, but the one below illustrates the location and current use for this pulley...

thanks

Listeroid Engines / Flicker flicker
« on: April 07, 2014, 08:59:09 PM »

As we know, flickering lights is a common experience with 6/1 engines driving an ST3 or ST5 head.
I am wondering if anyone using an 8/1 or a 10/1 is experiencing the same thing being the these engines can run at 750 to 850 rpm ?
Wondering if the slightly higher engine speed eliminates the flicker?

cheers,
veggie
