Everything else / Re: Guess who?
« on: July 26, 2012, 11:45:43 AM »
I did try to calm the waters with Willem a while back. As a result, he went all "black ops", his Youtube account vanished, etc. In fact, it ended up I had no way to contact him...!

His view is, this forum is "out to get him". And I have to say, threads like this (and I'm as guilty as you guys) certainly don't help get away from that perception. IMHO - and Willem, I hope you read this the correct way - you don't do yourself any favours by acting out the way you do either...

Of course, there's a dead simple way to solve all of this, and I believe Bob has already mooted it already: Let's get a WC Andree engine, with all of the good stuff done to it (I'm sure we could have a forum whip-round to raise the funds), and then lets work WITH Willem to do a thorough analysis. Or, because he'd probably not trust us as far as he could throw an engine, let's mutually agree a totally independent company to do a thorough analysis.

For me, I see things like the 100,000 hour claim (i.e. 11 years of 24/7 running) and think "no way José" - it's an impossible claim. The ONLY way to prove it in a reasonable timescale would be with accelerated aging, and I'm pretty sure that's beyond any of us as individuals or as a group? But there must be companies out there that can do the extrapolations, because modern commercial engines all have defined lifespans...

Willem - if you are reading this, and if you want to help yourself AND us, just join up & get in touch.

Or, alternatively, we keep on as we are - sparring with each other. I doubt it's doing either of us any real harm...

Lister Based Generators / Re: Metal lathe
« on: July 15, 2012, 06:37:25 PM »
Yep, I've got the whole workshop thing going on too.... an old Herbet Edgwick Mk1 lathe from the late 1930s, a Bridgeport vertical mill from 1985 - and most recenly a Bridgeport Interact 1 CNC mill, also 1985 vintage. I have a couple of old Manchester Rapidor donkey saws, AC/DC TIG welder, MIG welder, and a rather lovely Hardinge turret lathe (which, TBH, I will probably sell to buy another centre lathe).

Mostly used to make bits for themselves, or for the racing car. I've yet to make any Lister components, but it's just a matter of time.

Glad to hear someone is making good use of a slow-speed diesel, even if it IS one of those evil Chinese fast-speed ones :police:

Your inclement weather (supercell storms + heatwave) have even made the news over here in soaking wetland aka Great Britain - or, as it should be pronounced from now on, Great Downpour.  Lots of pictures of people queuing up to buy ice to keep their food cold. Should have bought a lister(oid) folks! Good luck those of you suffering fallen trees, floods, lack of power etc.

We had our own supercell storm last week which almost wiped out Newcastle-upon-Tyne and its surroundings. It's estimated to have caused nearly £5000 of improvements.  ;D Crazy footage of drains spouting 20ft in the air, a big ornamental staircase converted into a waterfall, roads looking more like rivers, etc.

Fortunately, although I live within a mile of the sea & a large river, I'm on pretty high ground & - touch wood - we've never suffered flooding even in the worst downpours. Didn't stop me buying a Lister "just in case"  ;D

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Container shipping out of England

Right, I have details of Brett's engine, and Terry's engines.

Jeff - can you send me the serial nos. & list of any extras/spare parts you believe are with Keith? I will add them to my list.

I will try to get a hold of LIZ to see what engines he has @ Blackpool. I have a phone # for him somewhere.

If anyone else believes they have an engine at Blackpool PLEASE PM either me or Gary (dieselgman) with details, so I can go over there with as complete as possible a list.

I am still attempting to find a means of getting the money Joe Cobb stole back from him. No joy yet, but I will get there in the end.

Mike's CE is with Mark - I picked that one up, dropped it, broke some bits, still looking for replacements  :(

I presume his 8/1 is with Keith.

We still seem to be stuck on the stuff stored in Blackpool... not certain how to sort that out without someone going there and confirming who owns what - so that it may be released and transferred to our new staging area.

Gary - I don't mind popping up there to see what's there, if that's of any use. IIRC Brett(?) has at least one engine there, in addition to Jeff's and whatever Liz bought & had transported there.

So I have this horrible pnumonia like illness invading my breating apparatus so sleep has been fleeting.

Take care of yourself.... I went there in Nov-Dec-Jan last year, I had no idea the disease was so dangerous. I guess you've already been to see the quack & got your antibiotics; if not, don't delay man, do it today. After my initial pneumonia, I started to get unwell again, procrastinated for a week and a half & ended up back in hospital for 3 weeks, with a massive infection & a hole in the lung...

All I've got to show for it now is a nice scar.

If I were god-fearing, I'd probably thank him right now...

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: Somebody Stop Me!

Might be worth asking on the stationary engine forum (http://www.stationary-engine.net/forum/index.php), there's a few diesel fans on there who might be able to help out.

Steering wheel's on the wrong side, though.  Don't know how anyone can drive like that.  Doesn't look safe.

LOL - it's quite simple really. I close my eyes in the corners anyway, so it doesn't matter which side the wheel is on!

Ronmar - it's definitely a car to put a grin on your face: 480bhp @ the flywheel, live axle...

In a bizarre new twist, Willem has completely closed his Youtube account.

I guess that's that, then.

Maybe the forum leadership should consider allowing him back. Don't laugh too fast. He obviously wants to achieve recognition and approval of the listeriod owning community. Unfortunately his failures have manifested into frustration and conflict. Think about how he must feel reading the the truth and reviewing posts pointing out his defficiencies from very knowledgable people without being able to interact. I for one find some of his ideas interesting, many to most are extmely flawed but his misguided ideas do spark a lot of constructive discussion. So to the leadership, i ask do you think about this: Could he be permitted to rejoin the "collective" on the LEF on a Probabtion status? He would have to be able to accept constructive criticism like the rest of us, take ALL his medication everyday and be a productive member contributing to the group. The outcome is up to him but do you think he is able to accept the challenge? Great opportunity to expand the listeriod knowledge base from an "abstract" thinker.

I can't speak for "the leadership" as such... (I am admin, not owner); but I can state for a fact that he is NOT banned (hm, I'd better check the ban list to be sure, but I'm reasonably certain he's not on there, and I will un-ban him if he is).

I would, genuinely, have preferred to work with him rather an against him - but, currently, he seems dead set on attacking the LEF & its members. I suspect that even if he were offered membership, he'd refuse.

IMHO: As I see it, there are 3 issues surrounding Willem and the Listeroid engines:
1) Making impossible promises (100k hours without  major maintenance? No chance)
2) Charging impossible prices ($100k? $10k No chance)
3) Mixture of good advice and bad advice - e.g. filling the rocker cover with grease

The last one is the dangerous one; separating the good from the irrelevant from the actively bad - if you're not already mechanically minded, following some of his bad advice will wreck your engine.

I'm not sure I like his handling of warranty work either (posting videos on YouTube basically accusing his customers of being dumb)

Edit: Fixed $100k price error (it's $10k).

Also, I checked the ban list, he's not there. So if he wanted to join, he'd be welcome.

I though they put those news rags out of business over there.

The got one of them (The News of the World, owned by Rupert Murdoch) - now they're after The Sun (Rupert Murdoch's other tabloid) and Sky TV (Rupert Murdoch's TV news station).

You may sense a pattern there, and you wouldn't be wrong.

There's a distinct possibility that The Mirror (owned by the Guardian Group IIRC, or maybe Trinity Publishing) is also going to face some fairly serious music.
