Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Container shipping out of England

All of those last 3 look familar; I think the fishy one is the first one (if it is screwed to a pallet). Mark should be able to confirm the fishiness...

The middle one seems familiar, that coil of fuel line is a giveaway, since most of the engines I collected were Jeff's I suspect that one is also Jeff's, but he will need to confirm. I seem to have lost my master list of serial nos. collected :(

There should be 2 more of Jeff's engines - one is almost uniformly rust coloured and smells vaguely of fish; the other has red spokes and red pushrods.

Jeff,  I know Ade would have had a struggle, just arriving at Quarnford merits a medal also I know he has a sense of humour (British) so even though the joke may be lost on you I`m sure he had a chuckle.

Ironically, it was only 6 miles from your place.... seems daft to have taken it all the way to Liverpool & back again...

3 days with a crowbar and some castors? a bit over equipped I think, 3 days is what happens when a 6`6"   computer programmer tries to do a mans job ;D ::)  .  All this batch are from your storage delivered to me by semi trailer with mounted crane.

Hah - you wouldn't say that if you saw the maths involved......

Hmm

Anyway, It had to come off a slab that was cast in place (so the concrete in the centre of the base was up to 4" higher than the surrounding concrete... the entire building was maybe 4' by 6', the engine sat in one corner with about 4" clearance either side. It was a mare. Oh, and it had to be unbolted from its base and turned 90 degrees just to get through the door.

It'd better bloody work after all of that!

Jeff - you're right, 2 more from Haverford west. I might have the serial numbers somewhere, can't find them just now.

I'm pretty sure the CE is DR Death's (if it's the one with the broken nose).

That VA sure looks familiar too - are these all from Blackpool? If not, the VA is the one i spent 3 days digging out of an outhouse with a crowbar and some castor wheels... man, what a job that was.

The 1/2 pallet of parts are Jeff's.

--------

OK, I recognise most of these:

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th & 6th pics are Jeff's (slowspeed) - I know, because I picked all of those up. That FR2 genset, I nearly lost that just north of Carlisle, I was so tired I dozed off on the M6, just for a couple of seconds luckily... needed a coffee & some fresh britches after that one I can tell you...

7th pic is Dr Death's CE

4th pic (the Lister on a trolley) belongs to Joseph Gilmartin.

As far as I can remember (please someone correct me if I'm wrong), all the extra fuel tanks belong to Jeff, I don't think there were any water tanks in the pile, maybe 1?

Gary and I get to split the Twin  ::)
Ade ,you had a good look at my engines,if you would or could tell me if I need to add some parts to the BOX so I can make my engines runners?
Cheers Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Lots of elbow grease mostly.... a couple of your motors are probably best used as parts donors - e.g. the one from Norfolk that was full of seashells... clearly it had spent some time on the sea bed. You will mostly be wanting cooling tanks/radiators I suspect, you have 2-3  fuel tanks. You'll need some injector lines and general fuel line stuff, banjos etc., but unless you're hell-bent on using Dursley original stuff, you can get all that cheaper out there in the States.

As far as I know, all engines are spoken for. We will fill out the container if any space or weight margin is left over.

It will be helpful for us if all owners will contact me with their full details at this time so that we have a very firm handle on what is to be done with all involved engines from here forward.

Bagsy I the twin, if no-one else claims it :D

38ac - good call, I just checked the manual and it does indeed specify SAE10W. I'm assuming this is pretty thin oil? I'm fairly sure it's not what's in it right now... Looks like a trip to the motor factors tonight for some fresh stuff...

Magnicon - there's a good chance this engine has been subject to many doses of easystart, it's an ex cement mixer engine unless I am very much mistaken. From reading the manual, it's unlikely the injector is a problem, they (Lister) claim to use one that's pretty well bulletproof, but it probably needs decokeing.

Mark, you're right of course about the gearing, based on how difficult it is to get going from cold, it would stand no chance if the ring gear was on the other side...

Looks like a lot of fun! I hope you include some type of clutch assembly in yours! Wouldn't want Granny running into traffic!  :o

dieselgman

Yeah, I want a clutch on mine. And a gearbox  ;D Currently toying with the idea of making my own 3-speed + reverse g/box, I am not sure how hard it is to make one, the diagrams on t'interwebs make it look fairly simple, especially if it's a 2-lever device. If the gearbox idea works, I'll drive it all off the flywheel ring gear. Clutch will either be homebrew (=hard), or maybe I'll see if I can score a centrifugal clutch, however, given the starting characteristics of the engine (and it's not properly winter yet, I am wondering if it'll start at all in sub-zero temps) I would have to have a g/box with neutral if I'm using a c'fugal clutch...

Other Slow Speed Diesels / New acquisition: Lister LR1
« on: October 16, 2012, 02:22:56 PM »
I recently bought a cheapo Lister LR1 engine - an air-cooled 2hp @ 900rpm unit which had been sat in a garden for some time.

Surprisingly, the oil looked OK, and there was diesel in the tank, so I had a go at starting it - no joy, I got a few pops and clouds of clag, but nothing resembling an actual running engine...

So, I set to and modded an old car flywheel (turned most of the weight off the outer rim, the LR1 already has a flywheel, it doesn't need another one), turned & milled a hub for it so it would mount onto the Lister's camshaft. 2 bits of flat iron were needed to mount the starter motor, I need a 3rd bit to prevent the starter from flapping about too much when running, and also to ensure it engages properly when the solenoid operates.

I then discovered just how hard a start it really is.... I took this video to show the claggy old beastie firing up. Until she's got a bit of warmth, I just can't make the revs pick up. Once warmed up, the engine runs freely, and will re-start on a single compression stroke. Speaking of compression, it is mental, the starter motor won't turn it over compression without a run up, or the use of the decompression lever:

This engine is destined to be converted to a throttle-controlled machine, and will be mounted onto the "Clagobility Scooter", aka Granny Chariot.... one of these:

JEALOUS!

Nice find, I've been (on & off, admittedly) looking for some kind of JP engine for ages. I let a JP4 slip through my fingers (doh), but a JP1 would be THE find...

Wow, he's got it bad, hasn't he?

Lots of classic paranoia symptoms going on there. I just hope he doesn't go loco with a gun anytime soon.

His pricing structure is bizzare. $11,965 for a 6/1, and only $30 more for a 12/1? And basically the rest of his site is having a go at us & George...

there is nothing in a listeroid that requires the use of a cnc machine, there is nothing in  listeroid that a manual machine operated by a competent machinist  can't do as well as a cnc operator on a cnc machine, save for one thing...

that being mass production of parts in less time,  which for the purposes of building one off parts for an engine or two really turns out to take more time than the same process on a manual machine with a qualified machinist, and/or

There's actually one more thing that CNC is good for; machining complicated shapes. I'm not sure if there are any Lister[oid] parts which would actually require CNC, but there are surely parts which would benefit from CNC.

cnc also means anything from a laptop connected to a taig mini mill costing a few hundred dollars all the way up to those which are used by folks like Boeing, GM, and others and costing millions of dollars and that are operated by robots.

Yep, and there's the kicker. Besides - I didn't see any tooling in that lot which was for a CNC machine. R8 tooling is used on manual machines, because the tool length is not repeatable (depends on how tight you cinch up the drawbar). CNC machines need a different system, usually QC30 or ISO30/40/50. The indexer we see briefly is a manual one and would have limited use on a cnc mill.

He might have a CNC lathe, there's only a small amount of lathe stuff shown, but even then, with the size of chuck he shows I bet he actually has an old manual machine.

I downloaded a copy a while ago, it works great.

Their YouTube to MP3 converter is a handy gadget as well, e.g. if you want to use a YT clip as a ringtone...
