I know your dilemma!!  I walked away from an absolutely pristine 67 122 Volvo 2 door with only 4000 original miles a while back. I could afford the entry price for a car to drive but not to keep as a collector piece. I felt that it would be a mortal sin  to tear up such a one of a kind survivor. Better to drive my nice, but tatty about the edges, drivers and enjoy the ride.

Best of luck on whatever route you go, there WILL be some soul searching I'm sure!

Best regards

Mike

Generators / Re: Belt Length Calculations

Thanks Andy!!

Guess it just takes a little persistence in sorting through all the data on a web site to find the nuggets of gold, sometimes?? I found the document  giving the specs for the pulley form. I have access to all the machines and tooling to make those pulleys. Made from scrap vs 90 to 130 dollars per sheave is  a pretty easy decision for me. The QD bushings are only 14 bucks each so I'll gladly buy those. Lookes like the only tedous part will be grinding the cutter.

If I recall, the taper on the sheave and bushing is  a morse taper (3/4" in a foot) my lathe has a taper attachment so I am in like "Flynn"! Lookes like a Machine Shop 101 project!!

Many thanks, compadre!!

Belt lengths???  I'm still trying to find a source for Poly V sheaves and hubs (SK type preferred) without having to call someone for a quote.  just a good online catalog (3D CAD drawings would be nice, but beggars can't be choosy). anybody got any favorites?? I like to do m own research where possible and I'm usually pretty good at it.  On this one, I'm batting zero!!

General Discussion / Re: Excluded Engines From US EPA Emission Standards
« on: February 05, 2007, 04:10:42 PM »
I really admire Mike's efforts. I kind feel like he really got dumped on overly hard. Nervous critters or those feeing threatened can lash out pretty visciously.. I figure we are critters like the rest,  and not exceptions to the rule.

As someone who was associated with the federal govt bureaucracy for most of my adult life, I think that  if it is exempt now it will be grandfathered in under most any set of circumstances. Remember what the US  Constitution says about Ex Post Facto lawmakingAarticle 1 Section 8 as I recall ( (right up ther with Bills of attainders (whatever the hell  THAT is))!!!??

Besides, the under 19 Kw, stationary, class of engines is, I'm sure, a very, very, small subset of CI powerplants in service. The under 19 Kw non-road  mobile stuff is huge by comparison... How many small Kubota tractors do you know of?? A bunch eh? Statistically, we are a SMALL blip. Even rampant bureaucracies have only so much interest in trivial pursuits!

That's my opinion for what it is worth.  Wyou know what they say about opinions... they are like a$$holes, everybody has one and they ALL stink!!

As for me, my EB300D Kubota is at the freight terminal for pickup this evening. The 160 amp alternator and charge controller are ready and I have  a welded up bed frame ready on shock  mounts ready for final drilling  and erecting the major sub assemblies.  I still have to turn up a big pulley to mount on the units flywheel for the Poly V belt.  I got some 6 inch diameter 6061 Aluminum that I can spin off a bunch of swarf to make a nice flat pulley. Unit even has a little control panel that has Start/Stop, glowplug, and vernier throttle built in. If it works for me pretty good, I have 3 or 4 neighbors (off the grid like myself) itching to have one for themselves.  I might have a pretty busy Spring up here on Finley Hill!! If not it will make a helluva water pump or log splitter.

Cheers, have a good week folks!

I think that is that SCOTT has been trying to tell us. The operative word is "stationary". It makes all the difference in the world.  Don't underestimate the Indians, they have an even more tedious bunch of bureauocrats toi contend with than we do!

Well put Jack!

One shouldn't under estimate the "opposition". At the same time, the powers that be, derive a lot of their "power" from citizenry who overestimate the effectiveness of government. As long as you let them, they willl run your ragged. Intimidation tactics die pretty quickly under "put up or shutup" when the intimidator is try to blow smoke up yer ass!!

Changfa Engines / Re: Changfa?
« on: January 05, 2007, 02:39:18 AM »
CAREFUL now! I've looked at those they are Jiang Ji or Wang Chungs or some other Chinese dish. Mohammed in Ohio sells real ChangFa's which are the cream of the chinese crop.  Chinese stuff has a variable level of quality  like Indian stuff. I've heard and seen some of the low lines that are pretty dismal. I have heard good stuff about Changfa slow speed diesels on almost every count. Hardy Diesel occasionally had some pretty ugly horizontals engines over the years andthey seem to have been other than ChangFa when they were problem children.

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: direct drives for changfa style engines?
« on: December 25, 2006, 03:08:53 AM »
Just to add a little to the mix, Yanmar make a similar unit  they call their FS series.

Kubota has a  some horizontal twins two The ones I have seen were 400 and 600 cc units (the ZCs), again, looks like far east sales only.

I'm pretty hep on a 8 hp petteroid for my "big boy" to drive a 5 kw ST head and hydraulics for the woodshop machines plus a little Kubota for battery maintenance.

What size is your Petteroid, Doug?

You got a pregnant woman out of bed because you didn't like the way she did the dishes???
Did it ever occur to you to maybe help out and do them yourself if you're going to be so anal about dishwashing procedure. You best edjucate yourself on what a woman goes through when she's pregnant. She needs your help and support, not some demanding tyrant picking at her!!!

The first method can easily turn a great woman into a real "ball buster"! The second, which your advocate has a a lot more promise.

We reap what we sow. My wife died ten years ago at the tender age age of 38,  what I wouldn't give to wash some more dishes for (or better yet), with her!!

In designing a place from scratch just remember the natual laws of nature and try to work WITH them and not against them. Water will naturally flow downhill.  Hot air and water naturally rises.  Things go wrong at the worst of times.
