General Discussion / Hello
« on: March 31, 2019, 02:24:06 PM »
Hi guys. Its been a few years since I posted last but I pop in for a look every once in a while. Nothing new in the engine dept. I might pull my 6/1 heavy wheels out and finish the rebuild (head was done 10 years ago). It is a rad model. The 16/2 in my avitar still lives here.
Actually there is a new one, an FR1 with a 6000w 110/220 direct coupled.
Its been a tough few years taking care of my ailing Mom who passed in January. Life can start again now so if any engine work is underway I will surely post it.
Take care all! 👋

Lister Based Generators / FR1 with 6kw gen freq question
« on: October 20, 2016, 01:58:48 PM »
My new to me homebuilt genset has digital v/hz readouts. Load free is 115/118 on the legs and 60hz +-. Does a slight rpm change effect voltage or just frequency?

Original Lister Cs Engines / Emergency FR1 Top end rebuild
« on: August 17, 2014, 09:48:32 PM »
Got a call from my Brother inlaw at the hunt camp, couldnt get the Freedom single genny fired up. Intake valve leaking compression after sitting  since last Nov.
I gathered tools and was off at 6:00 Saturday morning to see what we were up against. Basic tricks did not work so drain the coolant and off with it's head !!
I had never wrenched an FR so it was a real learning experience, especially doing the work back in the bush.
Removed the valves, cleaned everything and lapped them back in and reassembled. After torqueing the head and setting the valves we were ready for a start.
Big look of relief as it fired on the second compression stroke off the oil in the cylinder and after a few minutes of working the air out it was running top notch.
Pretty simple to work on, a salient feature of our beloved Listers.

Engines / SR1 Hard to start
« on: November 28, 2013, 07:33:08 PM »
My SR gave me trouble today starting. It is -10 c . I started it yesterday for a check prior to todays need for it and it started ok, albeit a bit slow for the first 5 seconds or so.

Today different story being colder. I cranked up to speed on normal running fuel setting but just puffs of smoke. Fearing I was getting too much fuel I rigged the fuel toggle off and then wound it up some more and over the top a couple times-no smoke. Set the fuel on again and it started but with a lot of grey smoke for the first couple hits then slowly came up and the exhaust cleared.

So, should I use excess fuel setting to start in cold ? Any cold weather starting tips ? I run it every couple months as a trial but I am wondering if the rings were a little dry letting a wee bit of compression through   ??? The injector was creaking every time too.

Everything else / Battery suggestion needed please
« on: November 22, 2013, 01:00:14 AM »
Frequent power outages while we are not home have dictated that we need to build a 12v battery backup for my sump pump. It only has to run for maybe 8 hrs intermittently so this is what I have in mind.

-existing 1/3 hp 5a 120v pump.
-1000w inverter
-battery ????
-transfer switch

I would run the transfer switch at the closest receptacle and utilize a maintainer to  keep the battery charged and ready.

What battery based on this size and how long would it work at say 35% duty cycle. Do I go deep cycle or regular lead acid and what capacity ?

I also don't know much about the small transfer switch I would need. Do they make them to just plug into a standard 120v receptacle ?

Edit- something like this  http://www.ebay.ca/itm/110VAC-15AMP-AC-LINE-VOLTAGE-TO-POWER-INVERTER-BACKUP-AUTOMATIC-TRANSFER-SWITCH-/190978420289?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c77336e41

Thanks guys

So, opinions needed please guys.

My 1941 10hp engine was received last fall with the one flywheel about 3/4" out of position re: endplay setting. The gib key is solid into the face of the hub so I cant get a wedge into it to snap it loose. Things aren't too rusty so I was wondering if I could just bump the flywheel in somehow without touching the gib until its time to tap it back in to lock ? I was thinking a length of big pipe with a cap on the end that would bear the open end against the hub while I gave a shot with the sledgehammer against the cap. I am worried about bending a rod. Think it will move away from the key ?

Second up is how low is a safe running speed ? I took it down to about 350 as a quik test today but didn't want to run it too long esp with the crank endplay not set. Would it still lube the throws ok ? My mains were getting 30- 40psi pulses on the guage at that speed.

The more I look at this engine the more I like it. All original and staying that way !

                                                                          Thanks, Paul

Original Lister Cs Engines / Air start
« on: March 24, 2012, 07:18:15 PM »
So I have this horrible pnumonia like illness invading my breating apparatus so sleep has been fleeting. In one of my more lucid moments last night I wondered if a COV could be modified to provide for the admission of starting air from a tank and then have the ability to recharge the tank like the big Rustons ?

I see via search that we played with this before, oh well late to the party again.
