Listeroid Engines / Re: Gaskets for a 6/1... buy for 6/1 or 6/2?
« on: June 21, 2008, 11:00:34 AM »
I have a 6/1 and I bought a 12/2 set of gaskets from Gasketstogo. I haven't used them yet but as Stan says they appear to be top quality. Everything should be the same as a 6/1 except the crank access door as long as the engine has a 4.5" bore. The set I bought has head gaskets for the 6 bolt head. His ebay store doesn't show 4 bolt ones but the 6 bolt should work.
I've had the head off my PS 6/1 6 or 8 times and I'm still using the original gasket. Not a single leak. Lucky me for a change. I used the Utterpower floor wax trick.

It looks like some fuel leaks past the valve. Lubrication?

Engines / Re: DIY surface grinder or Coleman Lanterns?

Britelyt owns the patent on the Petromax lantern, developed by Germany long ago. True multifuel, even biodiesel. I bought one as a Christmas present to myself a few years ago and it works really well. The smaller one would have been bright enough.

On my engine .12 and .22 cold equate to about .17 and .32 hot. I've never heard of a 6/1 as tight as .8 .08 and .8 .08 No matter what their set at make sure there is enough clearance at tdc. Spin the engine slowly past tdc and push down on the valves to make sure there is some movement. Do it with the de comp lever engagad too. Do this check hot and cold for a baseline. As Hotater said shorter lift and duration means the intake will spin slower. You can quickly seat the pushrods into their respective seats with some valve grinding paste and a drill.

Listeroid Engines / Pipe Insulation
« on: February 05, 2008, 10:57:58 PM »
He didn't list the insulation shown in my pic, no one showed anything but the thin walled stuff. I picked him because he had good prices on thin wall insulation and I sent him a message asking if he could get thick walled stuff. He could and we made the deal. "PIPE INSULATION 7/8" ID WITH 1" THICK WALL 6' LENGTHS"  Not 1.5 walls, my bad. There is no slit in the tube. There are 2 different type materials I came across, I forget the names but the kind I have has marginally better insulating qualities than the standard Home Depot stuff and feels more like rubber.

Listeroid Engines / Insulated Pipe
« on: February 04, 2008, 12:22:22 PM »
If you want build it yourself this might be a $ saving option.

I got this insulation for $1.52 a foot delivered. Ebay. 1.5” walls, 1” hole for ¾” ID pipe.
http://www.genedevera.com/listeroid/cogen/pex-insulation.jpg

I got the ¾” pex on ebay as well. $0.50 a foot delivered.

I don’t know how much the drainage pipe is as I ran my pex through the attic.

Thermopex looks like the best stuff but the only price I found was really high.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Rocker lubrication
« on: January 04, 2008, 12:05:54 AM »
My 53 SOM has a grease cup and no holes in the rockers. I haven't looked at the shaft yet but would assume there are holes in it to lube the wear areas.

Waste Vegetable Oil / Re: What do you do with the leftover crud
« on: December 16, 2007, 09:52:07 PM »
Captfred,
I have an annual summer solstice party that includes a LARGE bonfire. The leftovers are useful for getting the flames into the 50-60' range when used liberally. Building on an elevated platform this year to allow more air underneath and hoping for 70-80'. There are probably some places where this would not be appropriate.
They're also useful for attracting wildlife, from small rodents up to and including bears. Perhaps a "roadside attraction" wildlife preserve could turn into a profitable venture.
   Hope this helps ;),  Bill

I think it looks a little like this.

My disposal is much more mundane. I dig a hole in the gravel my barn sits on and dump it in there. I don't know but I'll bet there are millions of very happy microbes and fungi down there.

I looked at your picture of the Grunfos 25-58U pump and the 1 1/2' bell reducers that you have on the ends. I also have that pump and coundn't find any half unions for it so I made my own using 1" steel unions. The nut half of the union screws onto the pump, you just have to grind off the raised part of the union face, so that it is flat and use a rubber washer to seal. I personally like to use pumps that I can easily remove. Good luck with your project. I'll share mine shortly.

Tim

Spike, do you have the specs on the pump? I'd love to at least guesstimate flow and btu rates.

Everything else / Re: Make your own DIY Pex
« on: December 07, 2007, 09:59:48 AM »
I`d like to acquire about 200 feet of that Pex but unfortunately my budget can only afford Pez.  :D

My neighbor was fooling around with solar hot water heat exchangers and made his own `Pex` and it worked pretty well.  He put 1 inch black plastic well pipe inside 4 inch Big-O corrugated black plastic flex duct.  I bury that Big-O in my field as a conduit wherever I need to run electrical cables. I get it in 250 foot rolls and it is pretty cheap.  For insulation he used pink fiberglass batting.  Now this is the clever part.  He was able to obtain a long roll of a clear polyethylene continuous bag or sock.  He slipped this over the pink fiberglass as he assembled the innards.  The diameter of the insulated inside pipe was far too fat to push into the Big-O but that changed after he connected a shop vac to the plastic sock sleeve.  It compressed down nice and neat and he was able to pull iong lengths into the Big-O.  Once the air was let back in the insulation swelled out tight and he had a finished, insulated, direct burial water line.

Thats a great idea as long as there are NO LEAKS WHATSOEVER and the R factor has to be pretty good.
<addition> Could condensation be an issue? If that pink insulation gets wet it would be useless.

The insulated, underground burial pex is really expensive. A lot of it comes with only 2 wraps of thin insulation. The R factor has to be really low and there is no insulation between the pex hot and cold. 3/4" O2 barrier pex is what I used and can be found for .50c a foot.

Thanks, Geno

Congradulations Geno. Looks like a lot of work. It wasn't clear to me at first but I see you are collecting heat from both the cooling sys and the exhaust. Cool (or should I say HOT) How's the WVO working out for you in these cold temperatures. A lot of people paying $3.00+ /gal for home heating oil will be envious - and you're getting electric too.     Bill

I have to run about 30 min. on home heating oil (5% WVO) and put electric heaters on the WVO before I switch to it but so far so good. I heat it at the injector as well. My WVO has about 8% rug to thin it out. On these really cold mornings I also put a 125 watt heat lamp under the engine for an hour or so before I start it. Haven't used the glow plug yet but I'm sure I'll have to soon.

It looks like my web hosting service has been up and down a lot today so the links may not work.

Thanks, Geno
