Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: Chinese engines on Ebay
« on: May 07, 2009, 01:20:58 AM »
Carroll Stream Motor Company offers a lot of Chinese import stuff. I got an air cleaner and muffler from them for a 4hp Yanmar clone. The transaction was fine. They were helpful on the phone and I got what I needed. Other than that I don't know much about them and I don't know Changfa's at all. No affiliation. Ask them about the splash lube, it doesn't sound right to me either.

Thanks, Geno

1) 11 KWH per day averaged over the last 10 months.

2) ~18.9 cents per KWH total. That includes all the additional charges and taxes.

3) I turned off my 2nd refrigerator. I’m real close to being out of inexpensive options here. I began making my house more efficient when I moved in 15 years ago.

4a) Several years ago I moved my woodstove from the basement to the living room. There is more of a mess with dust and wood chips but even in the depths of winter I can go for weeks without any other heat if I’m gone for less than 10 hours a day. In that mode the oil furnace is off except for 1 shower a day. All other hot water comes from a pot on the wood stove. I’ll do laundry on weekends with Listeroid hot water and electricity. My last fuel oil fill up was 310 gallons and that was for 3 full years in upstate NY.
4b) Last summer I got an 85 MB 300D running on wvo. I can only run wvo when temps are above 35°f but plan on using it as much as possible this summer.

IMO in order to save money and energy it must be somewhere in your thoughts at all times. There are literally 100s of things I do. My ability to fix and build things for myself has probably been my biggest money saver over the years.

Thanks, Geno

What's the fuel flow rate at the IP if you pull the line?

Lister Based Generators / Re: My new engine room!

With my oversized heat-ex the carbon I can see is always dry and will wipe away easily. I can’t see the end of the exhaust pipe due to my cinder block muffler but I’ll bet water is always dribbling out. So far I’ve cleaned it twice at about the 300-500 hr. mark. I could go longer. The exhaust pipe out on the bottom of the heat-ex has never gotten any hotter than coolant out of the top. I don’t think the guts come out like Bills.

Now that we’re completely off topic here’s what I do to clean my heat-ex. Mine is installed vertically. I built a short wand for my pressure washer. I keep the pressure as low as possible and stick the tip in each tube for a second or 2. Works great unless you miss a tube and hit the area in between. Then it’s a big mess.

I finally got my own domain and didn't change my profile to reflect it.

Now fixed, thanks. There are probably many old links I've put out in the www which are now broken. The ones that pointed to the now deleted sub domain will be good though.

My 6/1 with SOM flywheels is rigidly mounted to a 2500 lb. concrete block and doesn’t move…..but….it sits in pretty soft soil and transmits low frequency vibrations to the house 30 feet away. It’s not bad but can be felt/heard if I put and ear to a load bearing beam or a foundation wall. It’s the same as a ship at sea if you put an ear to a rib. I believe movement in an engine like this takes away from the efficiency. I don’t know about longevity. Mine will stay as is. 2000 hrs. so far.

Listeroid Engines / Vapor Condensor Canister
« on: February 14, 2009, 10:09:12 PM »
I like the idea but I wonder how much of the blow by gasses would be condensed and returned to the crankcase in such a setup. I burn WVO and that's the last thing I want in my oil.

My testing of the heat rope and what it does to temps shows similar results. The fuel gets plenty hot in the hp line. Logic does tell me the injector heats the fuel to its temp but that depends how long the fuel is in there. Ken Boak (yahoo groups, listercsog) made a post a good while back stating the fuel passes through the injector to fast to pick up any real heat. I don’t know the answer. Many of the veggie car guys swear by line heaters and for a 100 watts load I’ll keep mine on.

Side note: I use about the same wattage per cylinder on my 85 Benz 300d. At 65 mph/29 mpg the fuel consumption per cylinder is about the same as the roid. It also has an IDI chamber and the old style Bosch IP and injectors. The nozzles look almost identical but are not. The MB nozzles have a pre spray, which I would love in the roid. I only have 4k miles on WVO but it runs great. I did a lot of work on it this winter and hope to put a lot more miles on it this summer.

100 watts is just about perfect on my 6/1. I leave it on all the time I'm running WVO. I see 180-210°F on the injector nut with a 2000 watt load on the engine. I use Mcmaster #3641k23 heat rope on the HP line wrapped in flexible fiberglass tape.

Hello Geno

In the above quote you mention "flexible fiberglass tape" so my question is what is that stuff meant for and where can I buy it? ???

Thanks  Billswan

I meant to say silicone tape. My bad. I got mine off ebay but it's something like Mcmaster # 7643a79

I use Mcmaster #3641k23 heat rope on the HP line wrapped in flexible fiberglass silicone tape. I've heard several opinions on how much the injector heats the fuel and don't know the answer. The volume of fuel it contains compared with consumption will tell us how long the fuel is in there.

I have 50 watts on the WVO filter and a 75 watt heating pad under the 13 gallon WVO fuel tank. I need to turn the heating pad on at least 12 hrs ahead of time in cold weather.

My head stays clean for at least 300 hrs and even then it's pretty clean except for some build up on the intake valve which gets to close to the piston for me to be comfortable with. I mix 10% rug into my WVO.

I'm just about to tick over 2000 hrs on the engine, 3 megawatts on the kill-a-watt and thousands of gallons of cogen hot water delivered to the house.

Thanks, Geno

Listeroid Engines / Re: Tips for installing a glow plug
« on: January 03, 2009, 11:16:16 AM »
My glow plug tip stuck out to far and got carboned up. I suspect it interfered with the swirl chamber characteristics as well. I fixed it by switching to a glow plug which was cut off flush after a few minutes of running. I can swap it before the engine spins all the way down. Just don't forget the de-comp lever or it becomes a bullet.

I have one of the 4hp Yanmar clones, a Kama to be exact. I got it cheap but it came with no air cleaner, fuel tank or muffler. Can't find parts anywhere in the US and I'm sure real Yanmar parts are a lot more expensive. Are there many dealers that sell these clones in Canada? Any names or websites would be helpful. I'll have some off grid property soon and I want a little engine I can move around and mount on several things. Generator, table saw, wood splitter, water pump and who knows what else.

Thanks, Geno
