Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: Changfa rebore and crank regrind
« on: February 14, 2008, 03:33:33 PM »
Was contacted by one manufacturer of a Changfa type engine (Not by Changfa themselves)
There is no over over size piston and rings produced and no undersize crankshaft bearings produced either.

So they you have it, from the horses neighbors mouth so to speak.

Generators / Re: ST sinewave distortion figure

Thanks for the coments guys. This sounds like a job to rewire the alternator rotor to take a 12v feed from the starting battery and power the AVR from that source too. Thats a clean source of DC we will get. If the harmonic winding is introducing distortion to the final output I would ask how that winding is laid out. If the spacing is off it will cause a problem and I used see that on PMG's that were home brewed. Its real easy to screw up the sinewave with coils and magnets not worked out right.

Two alternators came in here last week and one was obviously bought on price. And at first glance the owner must have thought he got the bargain of the year. For the output and continuous rating it was a good price. But when some appliance refused to work with it, the success of a cheap deal with pretty good quality parts soon fell down on build quality and I didnt want to judge it too harshly until I asked here for other owners input.

Its a pretty honest and old fashioned design and I see nothing wrong with that. Its just let down by low build quality. A little like some engines.

Generators / ST sinewave distortion figure

Does anyone have the sinewave distoration figure from an ST alternator they run, or measured it?

I am trying to get a feel for what is the norm and what is poor.

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: Changfa rebore and crank regrind

After talking to some people in Thailand they tell me nobdy there has even heard of the ability to rebore the liner and regrind the crank. Those parts are not listed anywhere and means the parts are disposable even in countries where labour costs are reasonable.

I posted this for a guy who owns three Changfa's in South Africa and asked if I knew anyone dealing in parts. I think the guy has gone to the factory now after his email to two US parts people went unanswered. He has an 195, 1115 and a 10HP air cooled, not sure of its model no. Its the higher speed engine and gets very hot in their climate, probably too hot. He tells me the 195 and 1115 have about 8500 hours on them and the air cooled unknown. He did run a little low on oil a few times, but not run dry. I guess that didnt help their life span. The bearings all still feel good according to the guy, could be Japanese I guess.

It seems a guy could expect 10,000 hours on these engines based on what this guy has seen and they are his only source of power. He uses big tractor radiators and water pumps on the engines. He also replaced the silencer (can we call it that?) with the rear silencer from a 2.5 Litre diesel 4x4.

A few of his neighbours run these Changfa's too and no problems reported.

I run 4 Lister CS's, all genuine Lister engines. I worked on a lot of oid's and some Changfa's. The Changfa's are a far better engineered engine and the QC is very good. No bad castings have been seen to date. They look like they will have a better life span over the Oid's without the drama of having to machine parts when you buy one. The cheap bits that I dont like on them are the silencer, fuel tank and cooling tank. The fuel pipes are best replaced too.

I will buy a few Changfa's this year to try out here long term. One will drive a genset for my workshop and I will put another in the back of my Landrover for portable use.

Does anyone know if the Changfa engines can be rebored and the crank reground, or is it a case of replace the cylinder liner and crank when they become worn?

Listeroid Engines / Re: Anyone order direct???

Those shipping costs are way over the top. I have product shipped from China of the same weight and paid less on shipping even though it comes on a longer voyage.  Contact a shipping agent in India to see what the market prices are over there for CIF or CNF.

The Satyajeet 16/1 exists, it just is not listed on the web site. Along with the monster 20/1 and 22/1.

Unscrew if running the engine with more than 30% load.

Why not buy a higher tolerance AVR?.....they do make them if you ask. I dont know what they cost, but its an easy question to answer.

Petteroids / Re: A Petteroid that fires once.
« on: July 30, 2007, 06:40:17 AM »
With grooves in the bore it will cause you to loose compression, scorch marks indicate cooked rings too. If you can feel the grooves in the bore with a finger nail, they are too deep and you need to get it rebored and install new rings. Covering an air cooled engine is a bad idea, they do need cool air operate efficiently. Although for my money and longevity, I always use water cooled diesel engines.

Get it rebored, put in new rings and she ought to be fine.

I had the very same problem this monring. A Lister CS came in for attention and it too would fire once and promptly stop. All the usual things were checked and in order. I began to suspect the fuel to the injector, now remeber this was a genuine CS and had good quality parts.

When the owner told me a few others had checked this engine before me and none got it running, it set off alarm bells. I asked what they had done and I had to ask exactly what was done and what was touched. In the end, his engine now works and the problem was down to a gouge in the end of the fuel line where it enters the injector. It was leaking such a tiny amount each time it went under pressure that it was nearly impossible to see.

I changed out the whole line and she runs sweet as ever now. Dunno if this will be your problem, but it was a new one on me.

Generators / Re: the famous 3phase question
« on: February 15, 2007, 12:25:48 PM »
The dog house jumpers allow you select voltage and frequency, not phase. The wiring of the coils in the stator determine single or three phase and they do not have any jumpers to let you change that.

That leather belt looks about right on the last ebay engine.

The side you have there is where the radiator lives. There is also some kind of coupling on the end shown. All of my engines have the leather ribbed belt too.
