Original Lister Cs Engines / Lesson Learned
« on: April 26, 2008, 04:58:02 AM »

This web site Has help me out alot along with a friend up in canada.I do not offer much advice because I feel I do not have the experiance. But I learned a very valuable lesson this past week.I received about 20 gallon's of used veg oil from a chinese resturant.By first inspection it look like good used oil,so I decided to add it to my storage barrel. As I was pouring it in the barrel I noticed a sweet smell ignoring the smell I continued. After filling a 55gallon barrel I decided to do a test batch I mixed and heated what was in the barrel so I would get a good reading of all the oil in the barrel.I pulled a test batch added the meth and lye and it solidified in minutes.I tried 5 or 6 times changing the lye amount each time adding less lye than more lye I still got the same result's. The only thing I can think of the smell was vinager so by not doing a test batch on the 20 gallon's I ruined an additional 30 gallon's of good oil not a very productive week.I did not pour the sludge of the bottom of the container's into my barrel. So newbies like me be careful just a head's up go ahead pro's let me have it :-[ Mike

I have a restuarant that is letting me have there used oil the only problem is they wash there fry tank with soap and water , and they drain it all in the same container. And they do not want to do it any other way.I am  worried that some of the soap will remain in the oil butI am  not to worried about the water . I am going to process this oil into bio diesel so I am concerned about the soap in the oil affecting the titration process do any of you that has been doing this for a while think this might be a problem I do not have the experiance to know. and  I do not want to make the restuarant owner mad by taking it then deciding not to. In this small town that will surely ruin my chances getting oil from anyone else. Thank you Mike

Thank's for the reply but dose that mean you can not wash out the soap or is it not worth the trouble. I just as soon not make trouble it is a small town and I am ssure it would ruin my chance's. of getting anyone elses used cooking oil. again thank's Mike.

Thank's Geno that help's out alot I read the info in the manual about the nip but I was not sure what was the best way to close up the gap between crank and bearing. I heard about the shim under the bearing but I am concerned about where the bearing and the cap come together,or is this not a problem.Thank's Mike
