Waste Motor Oil / Re: Blended Waste Oil
« on: January 25, 2008, 06:27:51 AM »
fuel is sold by liquid volume, one calibrated gallon is exactly equal to all other calibrated gallons.  trying to arb fuel based on thermal expansion seems a fools game.  What would the station owner do, wait for a cold day to take delivery and then heat it up prior to pumping?  What happens in the summer, does he only take delivery at night when it is cooler, or better yet first thing in the morning so the fuel in the tanker is cold from the night before?

It's actually a fair amount.  Thats why airplanes never "fill" their tanks, and measure fuel by weight.

Just a quick follow-up ....

My cocktail of oils, water, fuel and salt shows no sign of separating.

Try adding a SMALL (5%) amount of water, and gently agitate.  That may kick it off.  And warm it up to at least 60F, that may help too.  Even heating to 100F may work

Generators / Re: sell power back to utility
« on: January 23, 2008, 04:40:44 PM »
Well guys I finally did it.  Today my utility (Connecticut light and power) came to my house to do a witness test.  What that means is they inspected my net metering setup,  And it passed the inspection.  I am now able to sell power back to the grid legally and 100% by the book.

Congratulations !!  Can you enjoy a cold one, while selling back ?

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Cylinder Information

I learned a bit of information from my Amish Lister dealer friend

I suspect east coast is too far from me, but what's the dealers name/ph/web ?

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that the EPA “making” the laws is like the local zoning board “making” the zoning laws or the mayor “making” laws or the police commissioner taking a police car and going out and pulling over speeders and making arrests..

In California, that's EXACTLY what we have.  In Los Angeles, we have what's called SCAQMD
South Coast Air Quality Management District
 http://www.aqmd.gov/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCAQMD#How_the_SCAQMD_is_organized

From several county areas, a random (or not) sample of elected officials and some state appointed members, brains not a requirement.  We now have dry cleaners that have a store front in the city, and truck the clothes to Mexico or Arizona to clean them.  Wood furniture shops are nearly outlawed (business creates dust and emits SMOG forming pollution). The "do-gooders" have heavily impacted large business, which is slowly moveing out of the state.  They create their own rules, and have inspectors that inspect business both on a scheduled basis, and at random. They carry the same weight as a fire marshal, they must be allowed in, or you are fined.

Granted, about 60% of what they do is fairly reasonable, but the other 40% is way over the top, for the results it gets.

Trace/Xantrex SW series have been discontinued, and dealer stock is dwindling .

The replacement line XW series, is not fully ramped up into production.  The XW series is as capable as the SW was,
and has more capability for bells & whistles. (costs more too)

I would have seamless power.

To get a seamless transition, you need fairly expensive parts,
(grid tie/standalone inverter, battery bank, charge source) and a auto-start generator.

To stay alive, you can use a more manual system.

Recharging flooded lead acid batteries is about 80% efficient.  AGM batteries are about 90% efficient, but if overcharged, you cannot add water.  ( to get 100 watts out, you need to charge with 120 watts - 80%)  Holds true for any voltage.

If you have a DC source (generator) and it is running, it's power would be directly feeding the grid-tie inverter.  The batteries may be "on-line", but in an idle state, or preferably, in "float charge".

for 4,000 watts (33.3A@ 120V), I would suggest as high as possible DC voltage as you can locate inverter/charger for.
96V : 41.6A
72V : 55.5A
60V : 66.6A
48V : 83.3A
because of copper losses in the wires.

30A household circuits require 10 ga wire (USA)  more ampreage requires even thicker wire, both for safety and low resistance losses.

Of course, you will need proper DC rated fuses and circuit breakers, conventional AC ones will not work for DC, as the DC arc does not self exinguish.

If you are looking for something solar, to feed the grid, and reduce your electric bill, Grid tie can't be beat, as modern high voltage inverters  [ 300 - 600VDC ] run about 96% efficient.  I will use a generator for the rare blackouts.  Eventually, as I move out of the city, I will have a grid-tie system again, and because of likelyhood of extended blackouts, a generator & modest battery bank.

What sort of loads are the rod/crank bearings able to support ?  I'd think at some point, the impact from the combustion would be higher than the bearing can take.  Is it the wrist pin or lower rod that takes the worst?   Is the wrist pin just splash lube?   Sure, 25:1 is more efficient, but is there a longevity cost ?

I really like the  "blongg  blongg" sound that the lister(oids) make, when they have the long pipe/expansion chambers.  Is there a good rule of thumb to get the sound - [small muffler - long pipe]  or [long, large bore pipe] .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvpdYWNFHnU    is a video with an engine at 370 RPM, does that sound change much when at 650 ?  So many engines are recorded with the pepper pot muffler, they nearly sound like the 3600 rpm screamers.
Just looking for the right sound.

Listeroid Engines / Re: air starter

And I was wondering if this was a thread for compressed air starting the engine.   I guess that'd take another cam lobe & valve . (to inject compressed air into the lister(oid) to make it's own piston spin up the flywheel for starting)

I warn you, these engines are addicting and you going to want more than one. I'm looking at a 16 HP or a 20 HP single to add to my list this year.

Can that post be purged before my wife sees it ???

Waste Motor Oil / Re: WMO load test

I am a little confused on why you would adjust the ph in WMO? Adding lye to the oil doesn't seem right to me. And also where do you get litmus paper for WMO?

I think he adds only water for testing, and if it's too acidic, adds both Water & Lye for adjusting and , and uses ordinary everyday litmus paper to test the water.   When the water tests fine, he de-waters the fuel.  At least that's how I'm understanding his process.   WMO tends to acidify while it's in use in the engine (combustion byproducts)

At almost 500 hours I had the head off and found little coking

I forgot to mention that I found some white powder up in the combustion chamber around the injector. Does anybody know what that is from?

coke or hash ?
