Everything else / Coolant change
« on: September 19, 2020, 01:33:32 AM »
Just changed out 15 gallons of coolant a couple days ago
Link should take you to a viewable facebook album page

I use full strength antifreeze, mixed 50% with De Ionized water

Why Now ?   because in the thick gloom of the fires near here last week, the water smelled "off" when it got hot.
It was literally Rat Soup in the open tank.  Now I have to put a screen over the top.  About 10 years, no rust seen.

General Discussion / Listeroids at work
« on: September 09, 2020, 04:23:31 PM »
So, mid summer and skies are absent sun at noon:

Friend of mine is jealous and looking for his own slow speed diesel for generator use.  Thought I'd ask here first for him.

Everything else / Bolt Strength
« on: January 08, 2019, 04:45:37 AM »

Had another bolt break today.   1/2" di, 20tpi ( fine thread ) It was magnetic SS, USA made not chinese pot metal  (the cast iron was not damaged, I caught it early)

I've been wary of grade 5 & 8 because I've understood they are tough, but brittle and would not last long on a listeroid

What does the hive mind think ?

I've heard tell of get graded bolts, heat them up to temper their brittle hardness and let them cool slowly.   But would that soften them too much ?

General Discussion / Winter in Northern California
« on: January 05, 2019, 05:12:24 AM »
Big storm moving in at midnight ( about 3 hours from now) Supposed to last about 5 days, and all power grid crews in Northern Calif have been called into work.  The first day is supposed to bring gale force winds, so there are going to be outages.
I'm prepared for 5 days of running 3 hours a day to keep the batteries up, since solar won't be showing itself.

Everything else / NiFe battery experience
« on: December 10, 2018, 07:13:28 AM »
Starting a new thread for this.

My NiFe thinking:
Long rainy winters - tough to keep FLA batteries up and non-sulfated
Cold temps, all batteries loose capacity, so over-size the bank
NiFe are high internal resistance compared to FLA and so another oversize to allow for that.
Wide voltage swing full to low, select charge controllers and inverter that can allow for that voltage

Original install 2011

DIY battery lugs
  (still in great shape)

This last summer, while feeling fit and strong, I hired Fred (red shirt) to help with the labor of refreshing the cells electrolyte

and the prime mover (after the fusion plant 93 million miles away)

Listeroid Engines / ran fuel dry
« on: November 30, 2018, 06:32:54 PM »
Somehow, I didn't turn the fuel on when I started up this AM.  Ran for a good 10 minutes or so, and must have sucked every drop out of the plumbing.  I've bled and have fuel flowing out the top of the pump with the HP line off, but can't seem to get the HP line to blow all the bubbles through.  I'll get a couple good squirts, think it's done, and tighten the upper nut up, and it fires 2 or 3 times, and then air again.  I've rapped all the lines, trying to shake bubbles loose, and rock the flywheel back and forth, getting good squirts out the injector line, but won't keep going .   Is it just full of air foam and have to bleed it all through, or does something bad happen in an IP if it runs dry ?   I use 2 stroke oil in the diesel, 200:1 ratio (ir is that 1:200 ?  4 oz oil per 5 gallons diesel) so the pump shoudl have no damage ?

Any reports from owners in the area ?   Forecast is a mess, expecting weeks without power poles to carry wires.

General Discussion / Fires and decreased solar production
« on: July 15, 2018, 04:56:06 AM »
Had a small 8 acre brush fire about a mile from me today. Way too close. packed the truck, and waited it out, fire crews hit it pretty hard, till a overgrown  lot next to the big hospital in the county caught fire, and planes and chopper had it under control, and left for the hospital.
Smoke really cut down my solar harvest.  Clean up going on all night to keep the hot spots down.

Last pic is a big wheel logging skid, hook a giant redwood tree, and 40 mules haul it out of the woods

spare time, I'm a train and stagecoach robber , and held up the train, but got caught :

General Discussion / Grid Outages
« on: March 16, 2018, 04:40:59 PM »
Last Tues, I was on one of the 3 flights into Boston after the Nor'easter blasted the state.
Airport was a ghost town, 150 passengers leaving the plane & 1 TSA agent holding the exit door open. 90 min wait for a taxi. all hotels sold out.
I got to Cape Cod the next day, and much of the cape was out of power. I heard 3600 RPM generators buzzing like bees all over.  Today, noon Friday, still areas out of power, many business still shut down.
My Dad dumped a load of bad gas into the tank of his generator, ran for a couple minutes, and then died. Going to flush the thing out Saturday and try to put it away after it's run a bit.  Got my seafoam and carb cleaner spray to de-goop the rig.

General Discussion / cloudy weather started, new season on Listeroid power
« on: November 05, 2017, 07:19:42 PM »
couple weeks ago, in prep for winter, I did an oil change, wiped the dust off, and topped off the diesel cans.
Then I got a shoulder replacement.  boy that electric start is nice, no way could I crank and re-compress with 1 arm.  3 more weeks before i'm out of the sling and start  rehab.
Wife hates the 3600 rpm screamer. have about 6 hours since I'm back from hospital, and lots rain coming in this next week.

General Discussion / Automotive Dealer Service
« on: February 09, 2017, 06:10:07 AM »
Someones going to loose something.   Our subaru AWD, 5sp stick shift, was due for it's 60K mile service.  Supposed to include  change F & R differential oil. Since it's AWD front engine, the Trans is also the front differential.  Service done last week.
First thing, I noticed the oil change reminder sticker in the windshield, listed the wrong grade of oil 5-30 instead of the required 0-20 ( should be OK )
Today, on a 400 mile trip to the skin Dr for some pre-cancerous surgery, Bang.  Vrooomm.   car slows down.    Odd, it popped out of 5th gear at 70mph on flat ground.
back in gear, set cruise control.   10 min later Bang.  Vrooomm.   car slows down.   Again.   Now resting my hand on the shifter,   Bang.  Vrooomm.  Ouch that kicked my hand hard.   Ok, 4th gear 4K RPM and 60mph for the rest of the trip.  Call the dealer from the Dr office, oh, sure it's OK, manuals don't do that,  safe to drive home with, it won't seize up on the road  very reliable, never heard of that before.   Head back , 5th gear for 20 min then Bang.  Vrooomm  nope, still no better.  Got to the dealer 5 min before closing, insisted they look at it.   No juice in the gearbox.  Whoops.   Well, it's filled now and should be OK.  Good strong transmission, it'll be fine.

Fine my eye, the Mfg (If I can find a working address) is going to get an earful.  Then I relaxed with the Listeroid for 2 hrs charging batteries tonight in anticipation of a big storm hitting tomorrow AM and not wanting to go out in it.

Everything else / counterfeit hardware
« on: January 10, 2017, 05:56:45 PM »
Dam counterfeit hardware.  Broken mount bolt on the generator.  This set lasted about 25 hours    Genuine Grade5 gives me over 500 hours before they fatigue and get replaced.  Back to Ace for more junk parts from china.  And then I place a $10 order to mcmaster-carr for real parts and get to pay $20 shipping for 10 years worth of spares.
And that's why off-grid living requires 2 generators, having one would mean the lamb and pork in the freezer goes bad.
