When I assembled mine, I tried to use a ring compressor and slide the jug down. The tool got caught up and jammed in the chamfer at the bottom f the sleeve. I ditched the tool, and just did it with my hands, It went on just fine.

I like that cooling system!

I'm the other Texan who inquired. I just couldn't justify (to my wife) $500 in fuel and three days on the road for this. If it had been just a little closer...........

How did you figure out which pulley to buy?     If I need 3600rpm at the generator and 650rpm for the engine how do I figure pulley size?     I'm sure if I take the size of my flywheel there should be a formula to get the size of pulley I need,  but I sure don't know it.

i used an online calculator and ended up with a 4.5" pulley on the generator head.

Has anyone heard of an LP 60? There's a gent with two of them on a crate; he says they're 14 years old but never run. No starter flywheel housing. They also say Onan on the valve cover.

I saw those on the Galveston Craigslist. They are still there. http://galveston.craigslist.org/for/2334714010.html.

Hi Zero_G,

Is there an advantage to the different grove profile?

Casey

It seemed to me that there was a greater choice of belt lengths and pulley sizes available. Other than that, no.

I like your generator head.   What are the specs, and where did you get it?      Where did you get the pulleys?

I bought the Winco 4KW generator head from CSN for under $500 shipped. The price has gone up a little since then.

It is a 3600 RPM brushless type. I got the generator pulley from McMaster-Carr. It uses J-section belts, which have smaller ribs than automotive type belts. The alternator came with a pulley that I turned down smooth, since it had the wrong grooves. HTH and good luck.

I feel cheap about my earlier posts.  Your engine / generator system look great and runs like a clock. ...You've done an excellent job and deserve the credit you're receiving on this thread. Veggie mentioned something many of us missed.  It's running amazingly smooth.  I'm still impressed with the small aluminum radiator.

Thanks for the credit. I was worried about the radiator capacity, but it seems to be fine. I would like to make a shroud so air gets sucked across the whole thing, though. Stay tuned for further adventures!

Nice work ! Seems like a well behaved engine. What brand is the Listeroid ?

Thank you. It is a bit of a "scooter", but the wooden base grips the ground well enough to keep it from moving around. I am not sure of the brand. I bought it as a "kit" from dieselgman.

....How are you powering the water pump?

It is connected to the battery. It works well for Chinese crap, and the price was right.

Y'all tell me if I am off base here. The alternator has 4 connections, output, ground, and 2 wires (coil wires) that, when connected, excite the field coil. When the coil wires are connected, I think that there must be a battery attached to the output & ground to excite the field coil. When the field coil is excited, the alternator puts out over 14 VDC, putting a 1.5 KW load (guess) on the engine. This output could be used for bulk battery charging. Without the field coil excited, the alternator puts out 12.3 VDC, without any engine load to speak of, but providing adequate power to run the pump and radiator fan. Do I understand what is going on here, or am I missing something?

Well, I finally had time to put my Listeroid generator all together, and it seems to work well. Setup includes Winco 4KW gen head, GM alternator, small gel battery, radiator and pump bought off of E-Pay. The radiator has a thermoswitch that cuts the fan on at 190F and off at 150F, and under half load, cooled it more than adequately. I ran it for an hour at 1500W load, and will try 3000W load next time.
