Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Shipping a Lister from the UK
« on: May 28, 2007, 04:07:04 PM »
Mike (listeroidsusa1) is right, it will cost more than you think it should. I have imported 2 over the past 2 years, around $1500 each. Ballpark costs are 250 for lift gate pickup, 250 for crating, 800 for shipping and import fees (there are many, they nickel and dime you to death), and 200 to 500 to domestic shipping (depends on how far you are from the port of entry).

Hotater, myself, and a English fellow who used to post here (Mr Lister) tried to generate some interest a while back in a group shipping arrangement (full containers are much cheaper, if you spread the costs out, than partial loads), but there was not much interest, and the logistics (and additional cost) of getting them to a central "staging" location in the UK, and the similar domestic shipping arrangements that would satisfy all (import to east coast, west coast, or somewhere in between) negate much of the savings from the full container concept.

These engines were selling for premium prices on eBay (in the UK) just a few months ago, but seem to back near a reasonable range now. If you can buy a good one at a decent price, then it might be worth it (only you can decide that!). It really boils down to: do you want a half wore out original (original parts are expensive), or a brand new look-a-like; IMO, time invested to make either reliable are about the same, and cost is not significantly different whether you buy a good original from a helpful seller and be patient on the shipping, vs a good listeroid from a quality domestic dealer.

Peter explained the differences in injectors somewhere on this thread, try a search and you might find it.

We have a spare copy of the 12/2 GA drawing that I could mail you, it's an A3 size (17 X 11 approx) and I can send it over by airmail if you let me have an address, or I can scan the relevant parts and post it on our website, whichever suits you.

Peter

Peter,

I would be interested in 12/2 documents as well, if you can scan and post.

Thanks,
Michael

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Flywheel Grooves
« on: March 21, 2007, 12:54:07 AM »
Does anyone know, is there a specific side that the flywheel with belt grooves should be on?
Rick,

The one SOM I can touch has the grooved flywheel on the exhaust side. I have many pictures of SOM's, and taking a cursory look through them, they all seem to have the same configuration. Peter has a nice SOM brochure scan here that shows that: http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Technical/Startomatic1.htm

Having said that, I have seen several engines w/ SOM type flywheels, such that the grooved flywheel is on the intake side. Also, I have a 4.5kw SOM manual which has several "recommended" foundation/engine room" drawings, each has the belts shown on different sides... I guess you get to take your choice :)

While we are on the subject of safety, Penelope has a formed sheet metal cover that fits on the crankshaft, and friction fits over the flywheel hub.  This covers up the sharp bits that can catch clothes/hair (if one had any) while they spin.  She only has one of them!  I need another one!  Can anyone inform me as to where it might be purchased?  Do the Indian clones have them?

Bob,

When you say you would have about $2,000 in it, you are talking from a hopeful position. There many things that influence the final price. I know that Michael understands what I'm talking about.

Yes, I think I understand :). For a single engine, figure something in the ballpark of $1500 for pickup, crating, shipping, customs, brokers fees, countless other miscellaneous and incomprehensible fees, and stateside delivery. Figure $1800+ for a SOM or a twin, or if you are in the middle of the US, far from a domestic port of entry. Like Rick, I did have a fair idea of what the final costs would be before I started, it ended up being a bit more, and I don't regret a penny spent, but I can certainly understand why some folks would prefer to go down the less expensive "oid" path instead.

I would be hard pressed to pay $1650 for a 3/1, only because the parts that are not common to the 6/1 are much harder to find, but by comparison you might spend $2500 to get a nice 6/1 purchased and over here. Perhaps a week long tour through the backwoods of Canada would be cheaper :)

You mention 3.5 HP, do you mean a 3/1, as they are hard to find parts for (expensive)

Shipping is a pain, you need to hook up with a friendly seller (one that will go a bit extra, hold the item for the weeks it takes to arrange the pickup, crating, shipping, etc.) Those sellers are around, you just have to establish a rapport with them in advance of the deal. Hotater has a few still "over there", he might have a few pointers regarding the purchase and less expensive shipping options.

I've brought 2 engines over in the past year, it is not cheap nor easy. From my point of view, it is worth it in the long run... your milage and opinion may vary. By the way, on my last purchase, we negotiated the price in Pounds, but eventually agreed on payment in Euros via Western Union :) . I've only had 1 UK seller (of the dozen or so I have purchased odds and ends from) not be willing to pick up a wire transfer from WU. PayPal is cheaper and easier, when available.

Sorry to hear about the well they plan to put in your front yard, but if you can manage to get free gas that would be real nice. Although they have mineral rights, it seems you should be able to keep them off your land if there aren't any easements granted to them. It just seems wrong that you own the property, but an oil company can do what they want with it. Are they required to compensate you, and keep the land clean? I lucked out and got 50% of the mineral rights to my land....I think that means they can't do the same to me.

The law in Texas is really quite simple (well never simple, but in general...). if you own mineral rights, a form of property, you have the right to access that property. It does not matter if it is even just 1%, the "land" owner or even the other mineral rights owners cannot prevent you from accessing your property (i.e. your portion of the minerals). However, as your % of mineral rights decrease and/or as resistance from the other owners increase, you incur more risk and costs against a smaller potential profit, so a small percentage owner would rarely have the economic incentive to do this. Additionally, Texas Railroad Commission (TRRC) regulates other aspects such as minimum lease size, distance from established structures, etc. What it boils down to is this: if you want to absolutely guarantee no well on your property, you must have 100% of the mineral rights (at least until we get the point that it is taken from you under eminent domain).

Isn't anything made by Permatex classified as "stick shit",and therefore not suitable for use in a Lister?

Yes!

This loose bushing is almost certainly a result of this engine not being properly fastened to the geometrically correct minimum 2.5 tons of rigid mass.

Rick--

The TRBs could be the best part of an Indian engine.  No problems from mine in a VERY dirty engine that was new 72500 hours ago.

Hotater

Is that 72500 or 7250?

Looking at my original 12/2, the keyways are on in-line on the crank, the flywheels are keyed 180 out (wrt to the counterweights); if you are facing the intake/exhaust side of the engine, the right flywheel key is (more or less) on the same side and centered with the counterwieght, the left flywheel key is (more or less) opposite the center of the counterweight.

I tried the Tiny Tach on my Jetta a few months back, simple to install and etc. but the "refresh" rate (1 sec) was way to slow to suit me... I sent it back.
