Listeroid Engines / Re: Soot - how to remove it
« on: February 12, 2009, 03:14:49 AM »
Liquid Dial handsoap w/ a dash of Tide powder is a very good grease remover and pretty good soot remover... either by themselves ain't worth crap, magic happens when they are mixed.

I've seen Bob's setup close up and in person, the difference in loudness through his silencer is night and day, guaranteed to lull you to sleep!

... you can hear it sounds less stressed
For what is is worth, sound is not necessarily a good indicator of the stress inside a diesel, in fact they can sound "better" just before the big peices start to break.

Peter,

I forgot all about this, then went looking on your website today and can't seem to locate it. Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Michael

Hi Peter,

Very nice document, but I can't seem to "zoom" beyond page 24 (file not found). Is it just my bad luck or?

Thanks in advance!

Listeroid Engines / Re: Diesel Coolant Additive
« on: October 03, 2007, 08:46:00 PM »
The Fleetguard DCA or Penray products do not do anything for the coolant, they protect against pitting and erosion caused by cavitation. This is generally necessary only on diesels with wet liners, and in particular those that are turbo charged (due to increased cylinder pressures in the turbo charged engines, and subsequent increase in expansion/contraction of the liner under load). Many of the more modern antifreeze chemistries do not require additional cavitation protection (Zerex G05 for example). As the "original" Lister was not a wet liner, not a problem, probably would not be a problem in the lifetime of an 'oid, but if you really want to get anal about preventitive maint, add some to the old green antifreeze, or use Zerex G05 or something similar. It is a bad thing to mix antifreeze of different chemistries (like VW's pink stuff with the old green stuff and a dash of Dexcool), but the worst offense is to use tap water... use a single "type" and distilled water and they will all last a long time, probably much longer than your interest.

I was looking at how they did that, (split the breakers) and it looks like they used the same neutral... this is no good, right?

This is acceptable if the breakers are on separate phases, but NOT ok if they are on the same phase.

Stan,

Of course there are many other reasons, I did not go there. Better to go read some of the "books" that GuyF wrote :)

I am certainly not trying to discourage anyone, the originals truly are beautifully built engines, from a time when quality of design, materials, and workmanship happened to come together in just the right way. I did not go to the time, trouble, and expense for the two that I brought over to use them as many here would, I did it for most of the reasons you list AND to keep my wife guessing ;)
