General Discussion / Re: Flywheels again :)
« on: December 23, 2006, 12:39:21 AM »
Back in a previous life I developed this hand held hydraulic concrete saw (24” dia blade).

http://www.constructioncomplete.com/HandheldCutOffSawsHydraulic/RGCS24HydraSaw.html

Someone in the field changed the fittings and adapted it to their own power unit that had four times the volume and twice the pressure the saw was designed for. Also, they were using a 24” dia abrasive blade vs. the diamond segmented one shown in the picture.
When the blade let go (no surprise there) a piece of it hit him in the …ahh…his man parts….almost severing it completely off.  His wife sued the company for loss of services….and that he was no longer the size that he used to be despite extensive physical therapy…Don’t laugh… I am dead serious. Court testimony included pictures and actual measurements that were taken as therapy progressed…
His blood tests indicated he was too drunk at the time to have even driven a car…
But of course it was our fault ….damn lawyers….

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Thermostats for Lister 6/1 12/2 etc
« on: December 19, 2006, 12:08:44 PM »
The Slant #13479 has a flange dia of 2.5"...NAPA lists a #253 that has a flange dia of 1.805"...it is the same temperature range and is also found on a lot of Dodge vehicles...

The #253 reference is not an original thought on my part it's per George B's CD.

I hate to throw this thread off topic...but I ran across an ST1 complete with water pump mounted to a trailer in a recycling yard  last week.  It looked to be complete (I have pictures)  Its located in Central New Jersey
I have no commercial interest ...yada yada....if anyone is interested I can provide more detail...except price cause I could not get that out of the guy...

I'll post this in the Lister Market Area too.

Listeroid Engines / Re: "Kit engines".......where?

asavage,
I was being facetious about the phone call… :)

As far as I can tell unless you are intent on a high end machine that is ready to run… there is no better choice than to go with a "kit engine" that you yourself build and know every nut and bolt in it…anything in between that has yet to be verified by “Western Attitude” will be questionable…building a machine for your own personal consumption is not going to put you afoul of the Feds…

If you’re not willing to get into the “chitlins” of your machine when it is new… to learn it inside and out while you are in the relaxed comfort of your heated/cooled shop/garage/barn than what are you going to do when it is -27C during a blizzard or 110F after a hurricane when you will really need that engine to perform and have no one else to turn to….I for one will trust in the two hands pecking at this keyboard and nothing/no one else….

Buy George’s CD…

asavage,
I believe George has his phone number posted on his site…why not give him a call…I’m sure you two would have so much to talk about… :)

All,
This is a link to one of the many discussions on backlash…YMMV…

I would not hazard a guess as to what the best material is… but as long as you are going to order material I would ask the expertise of this forum…someone in particular could certainly offer the best options… after along day of working on his 6/1 we’ll have to wait until he gets out of his hot tub to ask him... :)

xyzer,
Initially I was a bit perplexed with your machining steps…had to study it to understand it…(light comes on) “oh I see…nice…very nice…” 8)
If I could pick your brain a bit more…what material are you planning to use?

One more thought…on bushing the case… a drill jig could be built that would take into account the proper alignment of the gear train i.e. the crank-idler-cam gear holes...since the idler gear is the simplest hole and located between the two assemblies it is logical that it would be the hole to “fix” i.e. bush.
Although it would be a fairly simple jig… if it is built well only one would be needed and it could be “rented /lent out” (with a refundable deposit) to those that needed it. (Paypal/UPS)  This would get the Listeroid back to using a standard idler gear bolt…
All of this is of course  “assuming” the gears in the train have been properly cut in the first place…which is another reason for excess backlash and not just misalignment of the holes.

Nothing is easy…

Dave,
I understand your point...the result will not be pretty....if anything besides the idler rotates....traumatic disassembly occurs...even if it is a single piece offset bolt...
I guess the parts will have to be well made ...so as not to do that...what a concept...well made parts... :)

Thanks
Joe

Just another thought on the two piece idler bolt… Initially I thought of a simple bolt and an offset collar to move the idler gear in one direction …to where it needs to move…one bolt and a set of collar sizes for different offsets…would work but is limited.
Let me throw out another idea…complicates the design a little but could add a lot to the final outcome…
If we were to keep with the idea of a two piece bolt but to have not one but two pieces that are offset.  Not only the bolt itself would be offset… but also the collar that slips over it is offset…. This would give an idler bolt assembly that would have fully adjustable offset…no more parts than before… only a bit more machining on the bolt…

The offsets could be adjusted from 0 (cancel each other out) to the sum off both components or somewhere in between….

Does this make sense…at all?
