Lister Based Generators / Lister FR1
« on: July 21, 2010, 11:11:00 AM »
I have put a video of my latest buy on youtube.
If you put in Lister FR1 you will find it.
Also a video of my FR2 and three videos of my CS.
There is a video of a home made compressor which I have since taken apart but I have made a new and improved one which I will make a video of soon.
Next job is to fit a Gast air motor to my sun tyre machine.
Cheers

Listeroid Engines / Re: New member - Need realistic help

No your engine is direct injection.
Indirect injection has a flat topped piston with the injector inside the cylinder head not sticking out of  the cylinder head.

I am sure the problems your having or not related to the fuel but to the quality of the metal.
The cast iron piston is for use in engines of 650 rpm only as is not suitable for higher speeds.
Direct injection is less suitable for alternative fuels but would work .
If you do run it on waste oils you will have to remove the injector and clean the tip after every run or carbon will build up and cause bad combustion.
You will have to decoke the engine regularly especially the ring lands.
I have not worked on a direct injection cs copy but the piston would have the combustion chamber in the top as opposed to the indirect injection having it in the cylinder head.
Indirect injection is better at burning lower grade fuels.
Would it be possible to import a original lister cs?
Hope that's some help.

Everything else / Re: Which Lister Engine should I buy!
« on: July 18, 2010, 01:17:33 PM »
Peter my single is 7.6 hp with cooling fan. I assume 8 hp with out cooling fan because British manufacturers rated hp after auxillary loses unlike foreign manufacturers.
The generator is rated at 3.13 KVA which would be right for the engines HP.
That appears correct to me but perhaps I am missing some thing?
My twin is 18 hp at the same rpm and the generator is 10 kva.
Both these are original so must be correct.
If any thing, the twins hp is over rated and the generator over rated for the engine.
Perhaps you could explain that for me.

That's a bit harsh. The cracking of the block in to the fuel filter is caused by frost damage -not the engines fault but human error.
As far as hp goes it's comparable to other engines of its capacity and not designed to run at low speeds like the cs, but a modern engine with speeds in the range of 1500 rpm.
It is more complicated than a cs but what isn't??  Any competent mechanic would find them easy to work on.
All engine manufacturers went air cooled for all sorts of reasons.
My experience of parts is cs stuff is drying up unless you want Indian parts, but the fr engines can be bought cheaply so a spare engine with good parts is not a problem.

Waste Motor Oil / Home power Lister 6/1
« on: July 15, 2010, 08:17:16 PM »
Still going strong with over 1500 hours now and no sign of any problems.
Just using sock filters to filter the oil.
I have also bought a Lister fr1 4 KW generator which to try some wmo.
I have the remains of a Lister VA if any one needs some parts.

Waste Motor Oil / new batch
« on: July 10, 2010, 09:41:51 PM »
This hot summer were having in the UK might be a good thing if my Lister is telling me correctly.
Sine I've finished burning the two stroke oil I had I've started burning the next batch of old engine oil I picked up from a couple of garages.
I always remove the compression blanking plug and clean off the carbon from the injector tip before the next run ,but since the hot whether and the next batch of  oil there has been no carbon for over a week and a half.
So I don't know if its the oil or the hot whether?
I am going to reduce the a mount of petrol diesel mix and see what happens.
I am on the look out for a regular source of petrol diesel mix from cars filled up incorrectly and then pump out by people like the AA but I was told by an AA patrol man that it had to go to an authorized company.
Has any one got any thoughts

You can run a FR at what speed you want.
It has a oil pump so no problems of oil starvation at low speed.
Even at speeds of 1500 RPM your not going to wear it out.
The CD and CE are good also but sell for more money.
The FR engines fuel system inc the fuel filter and all the pipes are heated so making it unique in that respect.
This makes it ideal for veg oil.

I don't here any one consider a lister FR which would be cheaper to buy than a cs and built like a brick s**t house.
Also the entire fuel system is heated because it's behind covers so making it possible to run waste oils.
It is also a cold start engine with two compression ratios like the cs.
Ive seen several  FR gen sets on ebay sell for a fraction of the price of a cs.
The FR engine must be the most suitable engine to run on veg oil in the world, unless some can tell me differently?

General Discussion / Re: battery bank size?
« on: June 27, 2010, 05:20:57 PM »
I use a 48v forklift battery to power my stuff from 10 at night to 4 in the afternoon.
I charge in between at 40 to 50 amps with a dynamo.
Apart from stopping and starting on diesel I use waste engine oil mixed with free petrol diesel mix.
My batteries where left flat on a scrap forklift for more than a year but there still working.
Here's a list of what I run of them in a day
Tv
Computer
Waste pump
Drill
Grinder
Welder
Fridge,freezer
Tyre machine
Coffee machine
As I,am charging the batteries I use the AC of the generator which is driving the dynamo.

Waste Motor Oil / Re: 2 stroke oil
« on: June 19, 2010, 02:15:12 PM »
Hi Casey,
Some one I know was given it by his landlord  and then he lost his store space so gave it to me.
I did think I could have put it in to small bottles and sold  it on eBay but thought people would't buy it.
I kept about 10 litres for my chain saw and brush cutter which will last me for years.
Kept the lights on for a few weeks though.
Cheers

Waste Motor Oil / 2 stroke oil
« on: June 18, 2010, 08:10:01 PM »
Hello
I thought I would mention that I've burnt (with a 15% petrol diesel mix) 205 litres of Total red 2 stroke oil.
There was less white ash and carbon than when I used waste sump oil, but I suppose that is to be expected.
I've just collected 3000 litres  of WMO, so should be alright of a while.
Cheers

I also have a complete 6/1 som which is powering my pc as I'am posting.
I brought mine of ebay uk also.
The wires between the alternator and start o matic box are colour coded so just replace one at a time.
If your not to far away you can come and look at the wiring on mine.
I would just carefully clean and leave alone.
Cheers

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Another Rescue Engine
« on: June 11, 2010, 06:37:01 PM »
If your using the heavy flywheels then install the heavy duty bearings, that's what lister specified.
My lister 6/1 generator has heavy flywheels and I fitted new heavy duty big end bearings when I rebuild it.
I believe its only the top sell that's different.

Waste Motor Oil / waste motor oil
« on: June 01, 2010, 10:30:35 PM »
Hello every one,
I thought i would post how i,am getting on.
I've been running my 6/1 for some time on a mix of 3.5 litres waste engine oil to 1.5 litres of petrol diesel waste fuel.
I've run other mix's and find petrol works well as a mixer but is expensive so petrol diesel waste fuel is free and my choice.
I find the injector tip gets carboned up and has to be cleaned, so i removed the change over valve and fitted a blanking plug which can be unscrewed and the injector tip clean.
Since i gave the engine a bit of attention its clocked up over 1200 hours on waste oil.
Definitely high maintenance.
Has any one else clocked up many hours on motor oil.
Cheers
Matthew
