Waste Motor Oil / Wmo
« on: December 16, 2010, 05:05:28 PM »
Does not seem to be many posts in general but there is no posting in waste motor oils.
Am I the only person using it to generate electric ever day?
People say they are using it and then they go very quiet.
A lot people talk about generating there own power but 2 years on they are still talking about it.
If your using wmo as a main fuel every day in a generator lets hear about it.
Cheers

Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / Re: CS in the U.S. on Ebay
« on: December 12, 2010, 03:59:35 PM »
I hope it works out, but people will often tell you one thing and then go and do some thing completely different.
The price of Lister generators is still strong in the UK where as the price of other things has dropped.
Lister SOM generators are still making very good money in the UK and I know you Yanks love them.
If you have people wanting Lister generators you can buy a Lister FR2 10 KVA electric start stop generator and a Lister CS SOM 2.5 KVA generator from me , all in good working order.

The bottom has dropped out of the market.
Lister CS engines are nice but that's a lot of money.
Is a collector going to pay a lot for a Lister CS or is some one going to pay that much just to make a generator.
I think prices are going to come down, just like property.

Waste Motor Oil / Re: Injector heater/compression change over valve
« on: October 15, 2010, 04:52:55 PM »
You will not see any difference in the carbon at a 50% mix.
If you increase the amount of oil to 75% plus you will see the swirl camber has white ash in it.
 ;)

My only thought was the white ash was normal when burning wmo because when my waste oil fired workshop heater is burning cleanly it has lots of white ash.
When it's not been burning cleanly it is sooty and black with no white ash.
I think the higher the ratio of waste oil burnt in a diesel engine the more white ash you will see if its burning it correctly.
I have notice if I just run on diesel the swirl camber is black.
This is why I feel that the engine has been running well when I see white or grey soot in the swirl chamber but I could be wrong.

I was using a ptc heater or I think that's what it is called.
I had it fitted to the side of the injector and it used to get really hot.
It just blow the fuse one day,I did replace the fuse but it blow straight away so I am sure it's stuffed.
I just use sock filters first and I also have two extra one micron water filters  on the engine plus the standard fuel filter.
I had thought that when the bung is remove the whiter the carbon deposits the better the burn.
When I have a fouled injector tip the carbon in the swirl chamber is never white but black.
I to have had a foul injector tip with white carbon along the injector stream more than a few times and this has caused the engine to not take it's load and use more fuel and run hotter and also smoke.
I could be posting in a few months tell you another story but at the moment it seems to working well.
I have 1500 litres of this oil still to burn.

Waste Motor Oil / Injector heater/compression change over valve
« on: October 14, 2010, 05:46:10 PM »
The injector heater failed the other week so I have been running with out it.
Every day before the next run I unscrew the cylinder head bung and scrape out any carbon that has collected.
There has been no difference in the amount of carbon and the injector tip is keeping fairly clean just as when the heater was working.
I thought I would refit the compression change over valve and see what difference running in low compression would make.
I can also report that there is less carbon build up.
I think the extra air turbulence is moving the carbon and the engine run's smoother in low compression.
Before I started running my Lister on wmo I read what people where saying about wmo and they would say you need extra injector heat and to run in high compression and run the engine under a heavy load.
I am finding you just need a 2000 watt load and a thermostat and that's it.
But I have had injector tips carbon up in the past but I think the waste oil I have at the moment is working well but I don't know why.
All I know is it's working very well at the moment.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: lister 6.1 cyl head

No its just the way its made.
If it was working fine before you removed the head then just clean off the carbon and grind in the valves and put it back on.
Its the machining for the seat you are looking at.
I would not get to worried about it.
If your still not sure then post a picture for a clearer view.

I think I know what you mean.
The valves should be lower than the face of the head for clearance reason's.
So the seating part of the valve seat is the lower part.
Just grind them in a little and that's all they need.

Waste Motor Oil / Re: WMO burners: How many KWH per gallon?
« on: October 07, 2010, 04:28:23 PM »
It's the same as diesel or veg oil but I don't see it makes much difference as it's free any way.
For there to be much difference between diesel and wmo, the engine wouldn't be running right and possibly being damage.

Petteroids / Re: 6 HP air cooled engine

If the engine is the same as the one in the picture it is a petter copy and  can be run safely at 2200 rpm

I have five petter engines of that type.

Lister Based Generators / Re: Lister FR1
« on: October 01, 2010, 03:51:55 PM »
Thanks for the interest.
It did not come with the control gear.
The remains of what was connected to the rear looks like it was a large dynamo.
As the engine has got an electric fuel stop start solenoid but no starter motor I am thinking the dynamo was a starter motor come dynamo.
I have seen in the last week the very same type of generator but complete sold on ebay.
I know the man who has bought it but have not seen it yet.
He is going to try to run it on veg oil.
I have since removed the engine and I am going to make a new frame and fit a newer alternator.
The VA is going to have any good bits removed and the block will go for scrap.
I have a FR2 in bits which I want to sell if your interested.

Waste Motor Oil / Re: lister 6/1 som

I use a oil measuring jug and put in one and a quarter of thinners like petrol, diesel, heating oil and add waste engine oil up to the five litres or us quarts mark.
Just give it a quick stir and tip in.
The oil is just filtered with sock filters.
I think that because the oil is black you just think its dirty,so when you can remove that preconception from your mind its not a big deal.
Removing the bung and cleaning the carbon that sits behind it is the only extra thing to do,if not it brakes off and the engine makes a nasty knock until it clears.
When I pull the engine apart next time I am going to set the bump clearance to that of a 8/1 and fit the appropriate bung so there is more clearance between the piston and the head for loose carbon.

Waste Motor Oil / lister 6/1 som

The head gasket failed one night so the next day I stripped the engine down just 150 hours short of clocking up 2000 hours.
All this time its been run on waste engine oil mix and there was no carbon in the exhaust port and the head and piston top had very little carbon.
When I pulled the piston the rings and the sides of the piston where carbon free and clean.
I fitted a new gasket and its powering the pc and the house as I write this report.
I think this is good news and I see know reason to stop burning this free fuel.

Everything else / Re: Which Lister Engine should I buy!
« on: August 06, 2010, 01:39:09 PM »
Not really, Matt, I can remember talking to both David Harris and an operator of a single-cylinder FR1 genny, both said the same thing, it was marginal at best. Twins and upward had enough power reserves to get over the internal losses.

There's an FR1 on ebay at present.

Peter

As a prior owner of an FR1, I agree. Plus, it was a high-maintenance machine, and awkward to work on. An inspired design, but give me a CS any day......

The fr range of engines are not high maintenance at all.
You may have had a high maintenance engine if it was worn out .
They are Very good engines but completely different to a cs which is a very basic engine more suitable to the less experienced.
