General Discussion / Re: Call me Lazarus...
« on: September 21, 2006, 09:44:57 PM »
When Christ called Lazarus to come forth, he was 4 days dead in the grave. What did God do to make him live? He seperated the good from the bad and restored the soul. How do we seperate the good from the bad? Sound engineering advice from theory and conjecture?

Most just read the arguments and use their own judgement I guess.

Guy and other members freely give knowlege, experiences and even documents to anyone willing to learn.  But wouldn't it piss you off that in the middle of a discussion you are argued to death when you know what you are saying is proven fact?

In reality we are just a chat room and no one is wrong or right. Say what you want, there is no authority here. It is up to the individual to figure out what's right and wrong. But if this website wants to become more than that and have a soul; If you want to keep the experts around then someone has to address the points Guy is trying to make. Otherwise, Lazarus will remain in the grave.

I hope you keep your website up.

Sorry to see such a gifted and generous person get to this point but it was inevitable. Your points are well taken. Thanks for all the information you have given me including the Connections DVD's and Engineering manuals. Looking forward to seeing your "mobile engine room" someday.

Hi Doug, do you think the dual flywheel Witte diesel used in the 10KVA light plant is a better design compared to the Lister CS?

What a person may have paid for their kit may not always be the same.  Dealers usually reward repeat business and loyalty with the best prices. Conversely, a poor attitude can negatively affect pricing. It happens in my business all the time, because I set the pricing at will according to market pressures. If I gave a loyal customer a discount, a freebie or otherwise special deal, it is common courtesy they not blab it to eveyone, much less post it on an internet forum.

A PM request like you said, would be a more appropriate way to get a response, IMHO.  It's not "protection" but  more likely a show of appreciation. When a person buys one of these, they generally plan on having it for a long while. Why not start out on the right foot and pick a dealer you can live with? It then starts a relationship which moves the whole "price" issue to one of value. Those who create value, in any market, will inevitably be the most successful.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Heads in the Sand, or "why we do it"

Yep, no doubt this is a proactive group. If conventional energy supplies wane suddenly, the masses will struggle. It will be too late to do much about it then except live through it.

Thanks to the forum, many readers like myself can know beforehand what *will* work and how to deal with problems that occur as we build our own AE systems. I hope the website can continue to exist as a great body of reference for everyone.

Energy is one thing; food will be a whole 'nuther problem.....

You *might* probably tilt one a few degrees as is. We are all probably thinking the same thing...oiling. If you had one with plane bearings you could dry-sump and pressure lube it externally. Then it may survive horizontally, but lots of mods; oil passages and such...etc.

Listeroid Engines / Re: What guage of wire to use?
« on: August 29, 2006, 02:38:15 PM »
Hi binnie, I use a Changfa/10KW st head for emergency power until I can build a Listeroid unit. I used 100' of 6/4 type SJ wire which is very capable of handling the load. But mine is a mobil unit so---different wire type wire but same guage. What's important is that 4th wire is a redundant ground. When the generator is set up for use, I install a temporary ground rod into the earth. (4' piece of rebar). The green wire runs from the genhead ground lug to the rod and then to the load (house) grounding circuit. It is an additional bonding wire, like mobil bob said. If you are going under ground, just run an additional #6 ground wire along side of the #6/3. Wire is not cheap but better than the alternative...

Where do you search for pull out's? Would it be salvage places or auctions? Thanks.

Listeroid Engines / Re: KIT ENGINE, First impressions--
« on: August 25, 2006, 03:56:16 PM »
I guess it depends on how far out of balance it is as to how detrimental the forces will ultimately be. It may only need be a small amount out of balance to make an unfastened engine hop around. So all this may be much adieu about nothing. Are we overanalyzing?

Hotater, I think the flywheels are the most obvious. We know there are wide variations in the quality of the castings. Substandard castings may be impossible for an Indian manufacturer to balance out at the factory. I will be watching to see how your kit engine flywheels measure up.

Making a solid frame is great for alignment but you still need the foundation, as Lister specified because it is a necessary to have that chunk of mass to dissipate/dampen forces. IMHO

I agree the engine requires a base as an integral part in the long run,  but not for the elimination of inadequate balance at the start of the engine's life. Especially if the thing is hopping around. Think of all that internal stress when you bolt down a hopper? Is that acceptable? I don't think it's good but that's my opinion, not experience.

We do know from the consensus on the board that some run smooth and some are hoppers right out of the crate, so, there must be a way to get from hopping to smooth prior to bolting it down to a good solid mount? At least get it pretty close to smooth.

Listeroid Engines / Re: I like the Kit idea...
« on: August 21, 2006, 07:48:30 PM »
Thanks, H. Their kit quality was indicated to be very high.... these may be better than the latest JK's built to Utterpower specs which would be nice. You might start a new thread or give us a few tidbits here.

It would be interesting to know, for instance if you still have to go through the same sand procedure in the corners of the block kind-of-thing. Or if the piston is cast-iron and 3 or 4 ring, block like the original Lister casting etc. Bronze gears? Ok ok, I'll quit.... thanks.
