Things I want to Buy / Re: overhall kit from Central Maine Diesel
« on: July 26, 2011, 02:07:42 PM »
I bought a complete single kit a little over a year ago. The quality of the parts is excellent but customer satisfaction leaves a lot to be desired.  In my opinion they ripped me for shipping and crating. While I admit to not asking (which is only my fault) it was none the less a heck of a high amount to pack the parts in a cardboard box, my $499 kit was over $700 delivered by UPS, just ask and you wont get supprized. Other beef with dealing with them is they are not exactly personable on the phone. The guy that deals in the Indian parts isn't too bad but the others are A-holes.  Overall satisfaction rating D-   I now deal with Diesel Electric Services, Dieselman here and satisfaction rating is A+.  My suggestion is to give him a try.

Things I want to Buy / Re: Looking for Valve Grinder machine
« on: July 25, 2011, 04:02:53 PM »
As Bob said. Log onto Ebay, search valve grinder, valve seat machine, etc and punch in nearest first. Be sure to pay the extra money for one with a large selection of stones, arbors and hopefully the guide knurls and reamers. It is by far cheaper than buying them after the fact when you find out you need them.

Engines / Re: crank case vent
« on: July 21, 2011, 06:25:13 PM »
The original CS engines didnt even have crank seals as we know them, just felts  and the end of the cam shaft is out where you can watch it turn and they dont leak a drop when the breather is in good order and blow by is within reason. I suspect the real problem with your sepage is engine wear and the resulting blow by but hard to say from here. Once blow by gets to a certain point it overcomes the vacuam that can be created when the piston travels upwards and oil will be forced out of every crack no mater what you do with breathers.  You might extend it for a while but overhaul is coming.

Generators / Re: What type of head is this?
« on: July 20, 2011, 12:53:08 PM »
Gary,
I opened the dog house figuring to see an AVR of some kind but none in there, just the normal things you see in a ST plus the capacitor (at least I think it is one?) . There is a large reostat to fine adjust the voltage which works well.  I can get a picture inside of it but it will be a day or so.

Generators / What type of head is this?
« on: July 20, 2011, 02:50:01 AM »
Picked up a Chinese generator today and thought it was a 5KW ST but tag said brushless. Removed the band and sure enough is brushless. What supprized me even more was I pulled the top off the dog house and other than a capacitor looking devise there is nothing in there that isn't in an ST.  I though brushess heads all had some type of electronic regulator? A pic of the tag for those who know more than me (which is everyone) An overall picture of the unit is on the changfa forum here.

Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / Re: Lovson
« on: July 14, 2011, 09:39:43 PM »
Ya, in my book the price is a bit steep but I also have things that can't be bought,, BUT for a price we might talk.  Nice engines as clones go can be had for around half that much and occasionaly a  bargain for less than that comes along.

RE: travel. Doesnt look to bad actualy. Have seen LOTS worse. All will jump when accelerating to RPM and all will have a RPM sweet spot where they will move less.  Did you pull the crankcase cover and look nside? How was it?

Busy time of year for us but we are going to do our best to be there with the engines. The Helmuth collection was truely amazing and I am proud to have custody of a couple of them.

Things I want to Buy / Re: Help finding Lister CS or Lister D
« on: June 30, 2011, 01:37:48 PM »
Besides the engines Dieselman is bringing in they do come up for sale now and then in this country and Canada. However as Gary eluded to they do command a price.
Expecting one to just appear out of nowhere, be in easy driving distance and cheap is unrealistic but so is expecting to hit the lottery and some do that ;D

1, PM or email Gary and make a commitment before they are all spoken for
2. Do a search of Ebay at least twice a week ( two been for sale in last year)
3. Same with Craig's list using a search engine like Craig's helper or zoom
4. Auction zip .com is another place to watch but searching it is a bit aggrivating to search (where I found mine)
5. Smok Stak .com  web site ads (been maybe 4-5 for sale in last year there)
6. Buy one in England where they lay about like yesterday's trash and import it yourself

Listeroid Engines / Re: Cylinder Painting
« on: June 30, 2011, 03:56:38 AM »
Dave,
If I was to do it in my shop I would chuck the liner true and then take the cut first from the top stopping when it is either true, or reaching the amount needed to reduce stand out which ever point was reached first. If the top is true and there is still material to remove then take it from the bottom. Although both are important given the choice I would want the head gasket surface true over he bottom side that rests in the counter bore (which likely isn't perfectly true either) In the case that you remove the needed amount from the top to set the stand out but the surface is still too irregular to satisfy then your only way out is to bring the sleeve up with a shim, thus giving you more stock to remove. Certain stand out is needed and I would not go below reliable specs.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Lister 6/1 restored
« on: June 30, 2011, 03:22:55 AM »
Thought you all would be interested to see the 1938 6/1 completed. This is one of the engines we picked up at George Helmuth's estate auction last October. It would turn over as purchased so nothing could be too wrong inside right?? Ha! it ended up being a mess inside so nothing short of a full overhaul would make it correct.  We are blessed to be able to do the work in house, even the fuel equipment which was handled by my sons. Simply amazing that it sits almost motionless on the cart even though after the video I found it to be runningh close to 700 RPM. Since been slowed down to  proper 650. I hope some day to have another example to work on as I will weigh each and every part so even a listeroid can be made to sit still. The engines does not pound the ground like my Metro, the smoothness just simpoly amazes. The water and fuel tanks are sized to it's intended duty, the engine show circuit.
